Crean via Twitter: Maurice Creek cleared by NCAA

by in Media | August 31st, 2009

It’s not often that Tom Crean tweets in all caps, but the news he just passed along via Twitter needed that distinction:

The Restoration job here just took a very large step. MAURICE CREEK HAS BEEN CLEARED BY THE NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE AND CAN START WITH US TODAY

You can only imagine the sight of all the grown men hugging each other around Assembly Hall. Jenna and Ann had to think we were crazy

We never doubted he would do it but its nice to have that closure. All of you were the first to know. Enjoy the day. We will

And enjoy the day we will. Not a bad way to start the week.

Q & A: Jeremiah Davis talks Elite Camp, recruiting

by in Recruiting | August 31st, 2009

davis0831092011 Muncie Central guard Jeremiah Davis had one of the strongest summers of any player in the country. Davis, the No. 40 ranked prospect nationally in his class by Rivals.com, attended Indiana’s Elite Camp on Saturday.

The 6-3 guard has offers from Indiana, Tennessee, Ohio State, Dayton, Cincinnati, Xavier, Ball State, Purdue and Miami (FL) and is hearing from Michigan State, Arizona and Kentucky. Inside the Hall talked to Davis about his experience over the weekend in Bloomington and got an update on where he stands in the recruiting process.

On the Elite Camp and what he took away from participating:

“I liked the camp a lot. It had a lot of competition. Coach Crean was very good at teaching and coaching us. I liked that part about the camp. We got to go up-and-down a little bit too. I could judge myself from the competition there.”

On where stands with his recruitment:

“I could commit today, tomorrow or at anytime. I’m just trying to see what the right fit is for me and my family. The coaching style, the conference, what fits for me.”

On where he sees himself fitting in at the next level:

“I would play the point but also I would play the off guard so I could make shots for myself and make shots for my teammates.”

Scouting notes from Saturday’s Elite Camp

by in Recruiting | August 30th, 2009

watford040909The following are notes submitted to Inside the Hall from someone that attended IU’s Elite Camp this past Saturday in Bloomington. It’s important to note that this information is not from anyone affiliated with the university. These notes have been slightly tweaked by yours truly.

+ By far the player most impressive on Saturday was Jordan Hulls. He is amazing at the pick-and-roll.  A former IU player that had never seen him play called him a stud. It will be really difficult to keep him off the court, so you could see a lot of Jeremiah Rivers and Hulls together because of their ball handling skills.

+ Maurice Creek is lights out.  He should average 12+ ppg as a freshman.  He can score from any place on the floor and is a solid rebounder.

+ Derek Elston is a beast.  He seems bigger than Tom Pritchard and has much more range.  He is also more athletic than I anticipated.  He could play 25-30 minutes a game.

+ Christian Watford (pictured) is very good.  He plays better in transition and is more of a three but will have to play the four on this team.

+ Seems like it’s going to be tough for Matt Roth, Bobby Capobianco and Bawa Muniru to get minutes.  Rivers, Creek, Hulls, Devan Dumes and Verdell Jones will eat up the minutes at guard.  Pritchard, Elston and Watford should play the four and five with the others playing when foul trouble arises.

Notes from Saturday’s Elite Camp

by in Recruiting | August 30th, 2009

etherington070609Here’s what we’ve been able to piece together from Saturday’s Elite Camp that took place at Assembly Hall:

+ Both of IU’s 2011 commitments, Austin Etherington (pictured) and Matt Carlino, played well. Carlino’s shot reportedly looked much better than it did over the summer.

+ 2011 Muncie Central guard Jeremiah Davis attended the camp and the buzz continues to be that IU is in great shape with him. Davis is an AAU teammate of Etherington on Indiana Elite Team Indiana.

+ Current NBA players Eric Gordon, Steve Novak and Jared Jeffries all attended the camp. Both Novak and Jeffries spoke to the campers and Novak was spotted in IU shorts.

+ 2012 campers: Lawrence Central’s Jeremy Hollowell, Southport’s Kellon Thomas, Bloomington South’s T.J. Bell and Menomonee Falls (WI)’s J.P. Tokoto. Ron Patterson did not attend and D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera is spending the weekend taking unofficial visits.

+ 2013 campers: Jeffersonville’s Darryl Baker and North Oldham (KY)’s Darryl Hicks. I had a chance to see both players over the summer and they both have a chance to be special. Jody Demling of The Louisville-Courier-Journal is reporting that Indianapolis Cathedral’s Collin Hartman and Brent and Bryson Scott of Ft. Wayne Northup attended.

+ 2011 guard/forward Aaron Thomas from Cincinnati Aiken (OH) is in Bloomington this weekend, but we’re not sure if he played in the camp. The IU staff followed Thomas closely in July at the Kentucky Hoopfest.

+ Indianapolis Pike’s Marquis Teague did not make it to the camp and all signs continue to point toward Louisville for Teague.

+ 2011 Gary Lew Wallace standout Branden Dawson opted to attend Marquette’s ‘specialty’ camp according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Significant here is that Dawson is considered a Purdue lean and the Boilermakers also held a camp of their own on Saturday. The Journal Sentinel report also claims that Michael Cobbins, Vander Blue, Reggie Smith, Jeremy Lamb and DeJuan Marrero attended the Marquette camp.

No shortage of 2010 visitors expected soon in Bloomington

by in Recruiting | August 27th, 2009

kyrieirving051609The limited inventory of scholarships isn’t putting the brakes on the pursuit of 2010 talent from the IU basketball staff. Here’s a look at a tentative schedule of visitors in the coming weeks:

+ Kyrie Irving, 6-2 guard, St. Patrick’s (NJ): Adam Zagoria reported late Thursday night that Irving (pictured) will give Duke a visit on September 25 and that a visit to Bloomington will take place, but a date has not been set.

+ Moses Morgan, 6-5 wing, Palo Verde (NV): The son of Winston Morgan, a former IU player, will visit on September 12 according to The Courier-Journal’s Jody Demling. Morgan will also take an official visit to Arizona State and other visits could follow.

+ Stacey Poole, 6-5 wing, Andrew Jackson (FL): Indiana made Poole’s recent cut to four schools according to Evan Daniels of Scout.com. Poole will visit Indiana and Kentucky both on the same weekend — with a trip to Bloomington on September 4.

+ Victor Oladipo, 6-4 guard, DeMatha (MD): Oladipo could cross paths with Poole as the Maryland native told Mike Pegram of Peegs.com of his plans to visit on September 4-6.

+ Brandon Mobley, 6-9 forward, Windsor Forest (GA): Mobley told the Indiana Daily Student that he’s down to the Hoosiers, South Carolina and Cincinnati and will visit in November.

+ Keep an eye on: Jelan Kendrick, a 6-6 guard from Westlake (GA) and the cousin of former IU fan favorite A.J. Moye, will reportedly take part in this weekend’s Elite Camp. Kendrick is the No. 8 player in the 2010 class on Rivals.com. 6-4 Norcross (GA) guard Jeremy Lamb is another guy to keep on the radar.

Crean updates Creek/Muniru, talks Knight induction

by in Media | August 26th, 2009

creek041309New Herald-Times IU beat reporter Dustin Dopirak is wasting no time getting himself acclimated to the workings of Hoosier athletics. Dopirak was on hand for Wednesday night’s IU Tailgate Tour stop in Indianapolis with a pen and notepad in hand. Here are a couple of items Tom Crean addressed for IU fans (complete transcript here):

The eligibility of Maurice Creek and Bawa Muniru: “There’s some technicalities with it. We’re looking forward to them being cleared very soon. We don’t have any reason to believe that they won’t be. it’s just a matter of it getting done. The paperwork that goes into it, it’s all there. Hopefully we won’t have to revise their schedule at all. Right now I can’t tell you exactly what we’ll do there. We’re going to wait and hope we hear something by the end of this week or the latest hopefully by the beginning of next week, I’ll be disappointed if we don’t hear something by then, that they’ll be cleared and ready to go.”

On Bobby Knight’s induction to the Indiana Hall of Fame: “I was all for it. It’s just a matter of looking out and saying ‘Let’s get it done.’ I think it will be fantastic to be able to walk into that building and have people walk into that building and know that their coach is honored with all of the other greats at Indiana, because certainly it’s one thing to have him in the Naismith Hall of Fame, but with everything he did at Indiana, the shelf’s not full yet. Let’s get the shelf full and get him in there.”

Crean’s comments are a good indication that from the IU perspective, Creek and Muniru have completed the necessary requirements to be declared eligible by the NCAA. Unless there’s more to the story, it looks like all six freshmen will be ready to roll come October.

As far as the comments on Knight, both Crean and Fred Glass should be given kudos for attempting to bring him back to Bloomington. The gesture to induct Knight into the Hall of Fame and put on the full court press for his return is a brilliant move. If Knight shows up, many of the fans who are still angry that he’s gone (they still exist, believe it or not) are suddenly back on board. And if he doesn’t, the finger can no longer be pointed at the university for turning it’s shoulder and not acknowledging Knight’s accomplishments. Sounds like a win-win.
