Louisville Courier-Journal: Indiana basketball commitment Luke Fischer already sparking buzz

Luke Fischer gave Indiana University a verbal commitment to play basketball on New Year’s Day, and even before he left the Hoosiers’ basketball offices the comparisons began.

A 6-foot-11, 220-pound junior post player from Germantown, Wis., combined with the way Indiana’s Cody Zeller was playing made it inevitable.

And Fischer really doesn’t mind.

“Coach (Tom) Crean even told me he wants me to come in and be like Cody,” Fischer said. “People say that I look like him, and some say I play like him. I have no problem with that at all. I hope I can do what Cody has done.”

Recruiting roundup: Monte Morris shines in Vegas

by in Recruiting | April 22nd, 2012

The first April evaluation period continued Saturday with IU coaches present again at events in Merrillville, Minneapolis and Las Vegas. Here’s a look at some of the highlights from day two of the April evaluation period:

· 2013 Flint Beecher (MI) guard Monte Morris (pictured) continued his stellar play at the adidas Exclusive VIP Run in Las Vegas and drew the praise of Scout.com national analyst Evan Daniels:

2013 guard Monte Morris is having a terrific game so far for the MI Mustangs. Has a pair of threes, a pull-up from 18 & a nice finish at rim

Morris scored 26 points in an 81-80 overtime win over Team Bradley on Saturday night. Fans in the Indianapolis area may get a chance to see Morris next weekend as his Michigan Mustangs are scheduled to be at the adidas Spring Classic at North Central.

· 2013 Antioch (CA) Deer Valley power forward Marcus Lee is a name to keep on the radar as Tom Crean watched Lee in Minneapolis per The Louisville Courier-Journal’s Jody Demling. Lee is playing this spring and summer with California Supreme. (Update: Here is Demling’s update on Lee.)

· Luke Fischer‘s Wisconsin Swing team is 3-0 through two days of the NY2LA Spring Extravaganza. Fischer and Swing are also expected at next weekend’s adidas Spring Classic in Indianapolis.

· Crean was also around for day two of the EYBL event where he got a chance to see BeeJay Anya, Jaquan Lyle, Trevon Bluiett and Trey Lyles. Here’s a rundown for each of those guys from Saturday:

– Anya: Seven points, two rebounds and two blocks in a 54-51 Team Takeover loss to CIA Bounce and 12 points, five rebounds and four blocks in a 68-60 loss to Meanstreets. Team Takeover is 0-3 through Saturday’s games.

– Lyle: Nine points, five assists and four rebounds in a 73-64 Spiece Indy Heat win over Meanstreets and seven rebounds and three assists in a 42-40 loss to Boo Williams. Spiece Indy Heat is 1-2 through Saturday’s games.

Recruiting roundup: Spring evaluation period underway

by in Recruiting | April 21st, 2012

Friday marked the first opportunity of the spring for college coaches to watch AAU events and Indiana had a presence across the country with staff in Merrillville, Minneapolis and Las Vegas.

Here’s a look at some of the highlights from day one of the April evaluation period:

· The Spiece Indy Heat 17-and-under group with Trevon Bluiett and Jaquan Lyle dropped their opener 66-52 to the Texas Titans in the EYBL Session 1 event in Minneapolis. Lyle scored a team-high 19 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists while Bluiett chipped in seven points and six rebounds. The Titans are led by Julius Randle, one of the top prospects nationally in 2013 and Matt Jones, a Duke commit. Trey Lyles also plays for this Spiece team, but it appears travel problems prevented him from playing in the opener.

· Jody Demling of The Louisville Courier-Journal reported that Calbert Cheaney was in Minneapolis bouncing between the EYBL event and the NY2LA Sports Spring Extravaganza being held in nearby Minnetonka. Cheaney is acting as an assistant coach on an interim basis as the position left vacant by Bennie Seltzer’s departure remains open.

· Team Takeover (DC) also dropped their EYBL opener 60-57 to CP3 All-Stars. 2013 target BeeJay Anya (pictured) plays for Takeover and finished with eight points, four rebounds and four blocks in 25 minutes. Tom Crean checked in on Anya last week at DeMatha on a trip to Washington D.C.

· 2013 guard Stanford Robinson, who also plays for Takeover, is sitting out this weekend with a broken nose.

· Luke Fischer and his Wisconsin Swing team are participating in the aforementioned Spring Extravaganza event and won their opening game over MBA Elite according to Demling. Fischer had 12 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Here’s a little more on the IU commit:

Fischer has improved his all-around game and looks like he’s stronger than he was last summer. He’s not as talented as Cody Zeller but he does have some similarities to his game, including a nice turn around.

Fischer talks state title, looks ahead to leadership role

by in Recruiting | April 15th, 2012

This AAU season feels a little bit different for Luke Fischer.

At this time last year, the Germantown, Wisc. native was still flying a bit under the radar. He was only a high school sophomore, and the bigger schools were just beginning to notice him.

As he begins this AAU season, though, Fischer does so with a considerable amount of weight off his shoulders. He committed to Indiana on Dec. 31, and he helped his high school team win its first ever state title in March.

Fischer’s Germantown Warhawks went a perfect 28-0 and beat Milwaukee King in the championship game.

“It feels great to have all that hard work you’ve put in over the last 10 years pay off,” Fischer told Inside The Hall. “Ever since we were like first graders playing together, we dreamed of winning a state title. I’m going to miss [this season] a lot. That was the best group of guys I’ve been with. It was something special.”

Fischer’s role will change for Germantown next year with the departure of Zak Showalter. The 6-10, 215-pound Fischer will have to carry much more of the offensive load.

“I’m going to be the guy being looked at more,” Fischer said. “I’m not going to be the other good kid, I’m going to be the best kid on the team. I’m going to have to be more reliable making shots.”

While Fischer was busy with his high school season for much of the winter, he said he and his friends followed IU’s Sweet 16 run as closely as they could.

“It’s crazy how fast it turned around for them,” Fischer said. “And now, next year, there’s talk for them to be No. 1. It’s cool to say that you’re a part of it, you know, in a way.”
