Stony Brook Notebook: Oladipo’s defense, Zeller on flagrant foul, more

by in Media | November 12th, 2011

Notes, quotes and observations from Friday night’s season opening win over Stony Brook:

OLADIPO CONTAINS DOUGHER

Tom Crean talked frequently in the preseason about developing individuals who can lock down the opponent’s best offensive player. The first assignment was given to Victor Oladipo, who blanketed Stony Brook guard Bryan Dougher for much of the evening. After knocking down a 3-pointer just 31 seconds into the game, Dougher managed only one free throw the rest of the way and missed all seven of his shots.

Oladipo said his gameplan was to speed Dougher up: “After watching a lot of film, he’s very effective when he’s comfortable. I just tried to speed him up as fast as I could, make him work and tried to get him a little bit tired. I think I did a pretty good job of that today.”

ZELLER MUM ON FLAGRANT FOUL

After being hit below the belt by Stony Brook’s Danny Carter in the first half, Cody Zeller calmly walked over to Tom Crean to discuss what took place. Crean said he told Zeller to report the incident to officials. The three-man crew went to the monitors and after several minutes of review, proceeded to eject Carter.

Zeller was asked what happened on the play and offered this quick comment with a smile: “I don’t know, you’ll have to see it on film I guess.”

CREAN IMPRESSED BY SHEEHEY

Will Sheehey finished with 13 points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal in ten minutes, but didn’t play in the second half due to flu-like symptoms. ”If he wasn’t feeling well in the first half, then hopefully he’ll stay sick like that more often,” Crean said of Sheehey. “I think it was more at the end of the first half when it really hit him and throughout halftime. He wanted to go back in, but that wasn’t my call. It was the doctor’s call and I agree with it. I thought he really did a good job of coming in, bringing energy, reading the game. Nobody tonight tried to make something happen that wasn’t there and that’s going to be a key for us.”

Thursday Presser Transcript: Derek Elston, Victor Oladipo

by in Media | November 3rd, 2011

Quotes from Derek Elston and Victor Oladipo’s Thursday afternoon media availability at Assembly Hall:

On whether the players feel ready to play an exhibition and what their excitement level is for the exhibition:

Elston: “The excitement level is definitely there. Every day after practice we get in the locker room and all you hear about is everybody wanting to play somebody else. We get out here in practice and everybody knows each others plays. Everybody cheats the plays. And our refereeing isn’t the best. We’re ready to get on the floor with some real refs and kind of just see how we do against somebody else.”

Oladipo: “I agree with him 100 percent. We’re ready to play against other people. We’re ready to showcase our talents. We’re ready to get things started. We’re anxious. We’ve worked really hard this preseason and hopefully it can carry over into the real season.”

On whether the lack of working on offense thus far is a significant departure from previous seasons:

Elston: “Yeah. I mean a lot during the season, we’re just going to want to get out and go. I know Verdell (Jones) said it the other day, we really haven’t worked on plays, we really don’t look like a halfcourt team right now. We’re the type of team that’s been running. Once we get that ball, we’re best when we’re on the fly. Plays, they’ll be put in and we have a couple. We do have a nice amount of plays. But really we’re a team that likes to get out and run and we’ll run it down your throat if we have to. That’s just what we’re about right now.”

On when they’ll need to focus more on playing in the half court:

Elston: “I don’t know. I just feel like it will come and go with the types of situations. Here in the exhibition games … that’s why we can’t wait to see. Against each other, you play situational games and you kind of check and see from there how you’re playing. Against other teams in these exhibition games, we’re going to see what works best. Whether we get out and run or whether we take our time and bring the ball up and play as a halfcourt team. I guess once we see that happening, then we’ll decide when we need to put in more plays or whether we just need to keep it on the run.”

(For Victor) On how this team is better now than it was at the end of last season:

Oladipo: “We’re more experienced. We’re more mature. We have more weapons now. We know what we have to do in order to win. We have to listen to our coaches and we have to play defense. We focus a lot on defense and we’re capable of taking our defense to the next level. I think we’re going to keep working on doing that and we’re going to continue doing that. And if we do that, I think we can be successful. I think we’ve improved a lot. We’ve added on three freshmen. You from even the scrimmages how they’re going to make an impact right away. I’m just ready to get things going.”

IU coaches, players talk about progress on defense

by in Media | October 31st, 2011

Cody Zeller’s arrival is garnering many of the national focus on this season’s Indiana team, but a substantially improved defense appears to be the key for the Hoosiers to climb out of the Big Ten cellar and into postseason play.

Indiana’s defensive numbers from a season ago leave plenty of room for improvement: In Big Ten play, the Hoosiers ranked 10th in defensive efficiency, 9th in effective field goal percentage defense and 11th in defending the three.

IU’s opponent free throw rate, which was the highest among any BCS conference team last winter, must also improve.

With just five days until the Hoosiers tip off exhibition play at Assembly Hall against the University of Indianapolis, here’s a rundown of what the coaches and players are saying about defense:

Head coach Tom Crean on specific players setting the bar defensively:

”Improvement-wise? Verdell Jones. Consistency-wise? Victor Oladipo. We got to get a bunch of guys that improve to the rate of Verdell. We’ve got to get a bunch of guys that have the rate of consistency defensively that Victor does. And Victor has to raise his standards consistently. Will [Sheehey] is getting closer to that. And what they need to understand is that team defense is such a difference-maker. And what we’re trying to get all of them to understand is that when you’re not guarding the ball, you’re always responsible for at least three things and you can not rest. You can not rest off the ball, you can not rest when the shot goes up, you can not rest on the weakside, you can not get hugged up on your man on the weakside … You can point out to any possession on the court, there’s one person guarding the ball, there’s four other people in a defensive position, there’s at least three things that they have to be responsible for. So the point being that that altertness, that awareness — all those things have got to play into it. And that’s what we’re looking for consistency-wise and improvement-wise.”

Assistant coach Tim Buckley on how the team responded to a challenge from Crean to step up the defense in the second half of Saturday’s Haunted Hall scrimmage:

“In order for our team to have the success we want to have, they’ve got to play together on both ends of the floor. I think sometimes any team can get caught ‘playing defense,’ but you have to get stops. That’s what your intent is, to get stops and when we do that and have that focus, we play much better as a team defensively.”

2011-2012 Player Profile: Victor Oladipo

by in Commentary | October 18th, 2011

It’s time for Inside the Hall’s player-by-player breakdown of the 2011-2012 Indiana Hoosiers. Today: Victor Oladipo.

Like most players experiencing the rigors of life in the Big Ten for the first time, Victor Oladipo’s debut season as an Indiana Hoosier was a mix of highs and lows.

Oladipo shot 59 percent from inside the 3-point arc, which tied Tom Pritchard for a team-high among regular contributors. Many of those buckets were easy opportunities around the basket and in the lane that Oladipo finished thanks to his athleticism.

His defense was also solid at times and his steal percentage (3.6) was third in the Big Ten. On the glass, Oladipo’s offensive rebounding percentage of 11 was the best mark on the team and sixth in the conference.

On the down side, Oladipo’s 3-point percentage (30.8) and free throw percentage (61.2) left plenty of room for improvement. If both of those figures can be improved upon, the Maryland native looks like a prime candidate to breakout in his sophomore season.

So where does Oladipo fit on a roster that should be much more competitive for playing time? Right in the mix to crack the starting lineup.

The sophomore guard spent the offseason in the weight room, working on his perimeter game, traveling to China with Reach USA and playing in the Indy Pro-Am in Indianapolis. Those factors, coupled with the fact that Tom Crean is looking for his guards to defend and rebound at a high level, suggest Oladipo’s role will grow significantly this winter.
