Big Ten tournament to rotate between Chicago, Indianapolis

by in Schedule | June 5th, 2011

When Indianapolis’ five-year contract as the host of the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament expires in 2012, the event will begin rotating between the United Center in Chicago and Conseco Fieldhouse.

The Big Ten made the announcement after its annual meeting of the Council of Presidents/Chancellors at the Big Ten office in Park Ridge, Ill.

The decision, according to Indiana University President Michael McRobbie, was unanimous among council members.

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delaney expressed excitement over the conference’s decision to rotate the event between Chicago and Indianapolis.

“What we wanted to do is get back to Chicago. We’re really pleased that we could get to the United Center.” Delaney said on a conference call Sunday afternoon. “And we’re really pleased that we had enough events that we could see Chicago, get back to Chicago and also continue to have a strong presence in Indy.”

Tom Crean expressed his desire for the event to remain in Indianapolis on an annual basis last week at an IU Tailgate Tour stop at Huber Farms.

“I absolutely see no reason, not only as the coach at Indiana, but from anything I’ve seen as a coach walking into that environment, that it shouldn’t stay there,” Crean said. “I’m hopeful that it does. I think any support that can be shown is really good.”

The United Center hosted the first four Big Ten men’s tournaments before the event rotated between Conseco Fieldhouse and the United Center from 2002-2007.

2010 Big Ten Men’s Tournament Bracket

There it is. Or at least, there it’s linked. IU takes on Northwestern in the 7-10 match-up 25 minutes after the first game Thursday, which starts at 2:30 p.m. So I’m guessing about five o’clock — just in time for the end of work Thursday. Three-day weekend?

We’ll surely have more on this coming soon, but I wanted to go ahead and toss this up here. Hope you had a good weekend.

When There’s Nothing On The Horizon You’ve Got Nothing Left To Prove: Saying farewell to the 2008-09 Indiana Hoosiers

by in Commentary | March 16th, 2009

Some rambling postseason thoughts on a Monday morning …

So, we’re a few days removed from Indiana’s season-ending first round loss to Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament. Ho, hum. We all knew the Hoosiers were probably going to lose. Whatever hopes we had of an upset were minimal and fleeting. And so the season ends, and on we go, set for another offseason that will be far less angry, anxious, and uncertain than last season’s.

Comparing the two situations is almost funny. This time last year, we had just been destroyed by Arkansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Sure, Arkansas was a good team, and it was a tough draw, talent-wise, but by that point it almost didn’t matter. A once-promising season with a lineup stocked full of players was derailed entirely when Kelvin Sampson was fired for being a naughty boy. The team lost most of the rest of its games, limped into the NCAAs, and were promptly spanked. But it wasn’t the loss that was disconcerting. It’s what came before it, and what was still ahead.

Cue the offseason: a series of ugly incidents and confusing decisions punctuated by a brief moment of optimism. That moment was Tom Crean’s hire. It’s the hire IU should have made two years ago, when they instead chose a coach under investigation for having the cell phone tendencies of a 13-year-old meth addict. Crean was a steadier, calmer, more reasonable choice with just as good of a coaching record and a history of recruiting well in Indiana and Chicago. Why he wasn’t originally chosen to succeed Mike Davis is a mystery that still confounds to this day. (Then-IU president Adam Herbert’s insistence on a minority hire is likely the answer, but oh well. Spilled milk, and all that.)
