Notebook: Individual workouts begin, rankings and more

by in Media | August 30th, 2011

– Individual workouts begin: The start of the fall academic semester on Monday also signaled the start of individual workouts with the IU coaches and players in Assembly Hall. Tom Crean shared the following observations from day one (and also some photos) via his Twitter account:

Some things I liked yesterday after our 1st workouts: Verdell ‘s strength and finishing, Cody’s potential for range on his shot, Austin’s jumper, Will’s pullup and increased range, Victor’s release on his shot and Christian’s patience at reading defenders. Jordan was our best % shooter in our tests yesterday and that is no surprise. Maurice goes for the 1st time today. That will be great to see. I loved the way Derek moved and shot the ball yesterday. Having him healthy could make a big difference. He has to develop consistency.

– Rankings, rankings and more rankings: Scout.com revealed team rankings for the 2012 class and Indiana debuted at No. 1. Our friends at UMHoops.com are tracking recruiting efforts across the Big Ten and the Hoosiers also sit atop there. Rivals revealed its top 150 for 2013 and both Collin Hartman and Devin Davis are in the top 100. And finally, Ballin’ is a Habit has consensus post-July rankings for 2012 which are an aggregation of Rivals, Scout, ESPN, CBS and 247Sports.

– Better luck? Andy Glockner of SI.com profiled five teams, including Indiana, that found themselves in the bottom 50 of Ken Pomeroy’s luck rating, a statistic that measures the difference between a team’s actual record and its expected performance based on efficiency ratings. His conclusion? Things are looking up in Bloomington. It should be noted that the Hoosiers were actually 343rd out of 345 teams in last year’s Pomeroy “luck” rating.

Fan Report: Moore, Hammons, Marrero, Thomas

by in Fan Report | July 9th, 2010

The Fan Report is Inside the Hall’s version of Letters to the Editor. Submit a Fan Report at this link. Today’s entry was submitted by Kelin Blab.

Notes and observations from Spiece Indy Heat’s 87-85 win over Queen City Prophets at the Hoosier Shootout:

+ Nic Moore, Spiece Indy Heat (pictured): The Warsaw guard took and made every big shot. He is very crafty inside and drew several fouls. He can flat out shoot it. He plays with guts and is willing to guard anyone. To begin the game he was guarding Aaron Thomas and did a good job on him despite the size difference. He was impressive to say the least.

+ AJ Hammons, Spiece Indy Heat: I hope prep school helps him next season with his physical play and toughness. He has a ton of upside, but drifts a lot in games. For a 7-footer, he really doesn’t make his presence felt on the court. Physically he looks great and he displays soft touch inside. Also a smart defender.

+ DeJuan Marrero, Spiece Indy Heat: Tough. That is his game. Tough defensively, tough rebounder, just tough. I, nor he, has any idea what position he will play in college. He played on the wing and struggled with his jumper and ball handling. If he gets a decent mid-range game and improves his ball handling, he will be a stud. What gets him over is he plays harder than anyone on the court at all times.

+ Aaron Thomas, Queen City Prophets: I finally saw a motivated Aaron Thomas. Prior to the game, you could tell he was ready for this one. After a shoving match with Purdue recruit Raphael Davis, Thomas went on a run on both ends of the court. He gets to the basket and finishes strong. In one instance he got to the basket and finished with a left-handed dunk. His ability to shoot is definitely there and he possesses tremendous upside. If a coach can get him motivated consistently, he will be a big-time player.  He finished with 26 points.

2012 Intro: DeJuan Marrero

The Essentials: 6-5, 205-lb forward for Bowman Academy and Spiece Indy Heat

The Schools: Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State and Purdue have offered scholarships. Florida, Kentucky, Marquette, Michigan and Xavier have expressed interest.

The Numbers: 17.0 ppg and 12.0 rpg for Bowman Academy, which won the Class A state championship.

The Leaders: Long considered to be a Purdue-lean, the Boilermakers, Illinois and Ohio State are believed to be the three schools in the best shape with Marrero, who has not named a leader publicly.

The Quote: “It is cool. I know they are two big rival schools, and knowing I have Indiana and Purdue shows me that my hard work has paid off. It is great to have two great schools recruiting me.” – Marrero to Brian Snow of Rivals.com on being recruited by Indiana and Purdue.

The Ranking: The Hoop Scoop ranks Marrero the 38th best prospect in the 2012 class.

Observations from the 100th Indiana State Finals

by in Commentary | March 28th, 2010

For the first time since the launch of this blog, I made my way to Conseco Fieldhouse for the state finals on Saturday. I did not leave disappointed. My observations from the day begin … now:

+ Faces in the crowd: Tom Crean, accompanied by his son Riley, was in the house for the evening session. Decked out in crimson IU gear, Crean was positioned on the baseline and was easy to spot. Among the other coaches in attendance: Tubby Smith, Bruce Weber, Matt Painter, Roy Williams and Ohio State assistant coach Brandon Miller.

+ Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell, Park Tudor (pictured): This was actually my first time watching Ferrell, a sophomore, and I was particularly interested in getting a good read given the recent scholarship offer by Indiana. Ferrell struggled from the field (7 of 21), but was still the most talented player in the 2A game, which Park Tudor lost to Wheeler 41-38. At 5-10, 160 pounds, size must be taken into consideration when evaluating Ferrell’s ceiling, but he did appear capable of playing in the Big Ten. He’s more of a scorer than a pure point guard, is stronger than he looks, makes intelligent decisions and has a really nice handle. In other words, I liked him. I’ll be interested to get another look at Ferrell this spring and summer when he’s not attacked by constant double teams.

+ Cody Zeller, Washington: The 6-9 junior forward continues to improve every time he steps on the court. Gary Wallace had no answer for Zeller on the glass, evidenced by the 26 rebounds he corralled, tying a 3A state finals record. Zeller has excellent hands and if he can continue to get stronger, he’ll be a handful on the boards at the next level. Offensively, he didn’t shoot particularly well, but was able to get to the foul line all evening. I continue to hear Butler, Indiana and North Carolina as three schools in solid standing with Zeller, but nothing to indicate he’s leaning in any particular direction.

Video: DeJuan Marrero on Bowman Academy’s win

by in Video | March 27th, 2010

DeJuan Marrero, the 6-5 wing from Bowman Academy in Gary who was offered a scholarship by Tom Crean last year, scored 17 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had six assists as the Eagles beat Barr-Reeeve, 74-52, for the Class A championship.

Afterwards, Marrero, along with his teammates and coach Marvin Rea, met with the media. Here’s a short clip from Marrero, where he says the refs told him to play his game in the second half:

A look at 2012 recruit DeJuan Marrero

by in Recruiting | January 29th, 2010

For those who do not know, I also moonlight as a freelance sports writer for the Times of Northwest Indiana (whuddup region readers) covering Notre Dame sports and local schools when they make the trip east. As such, I got out to South Bend Washington High School for a game against No. 1 Bowman Academy, and when I went to sign in, whose name should I see above mine but Mr. Matthew Painter.

The Eagles sport a deep and athletic roster that’s gotten them a 14-0 record and the top spot in 1-A boys basketball. They’ve also got DeJuan Marrero, whom I presume Painter was present to watch.

Some vitals: Marrero is a sophomore, listed at 6-foot-5, which seems about right. Rivals and Bowman both have him as a forward, and he’s thus far received offers from Indiana, Illinois, Purdue and Ohio State, and interest from Michigan, Kentucky and Wake Forest. So dude’s a recruiting magnet with more than two years left to polish his game.

Painter might have had cause to leave South Bend a little bit disappointed, as Marrero spent most of the game on the bench with foul trouble. But Marrero got onto the floor for good in the fourth quarter, and his coach even left him out there when he pulled the rest of Bowman’s starters, presumably to make sure that the kid got good exposure in front of a Big Ten coach.
