Garrett Green chooses San Diego State

by in Recruiting | August 6th, 2011

Garrett Green is headed to San Diego State for his final season of college basketball.

Edward Lewis from the San Diego State Rivals affiliate, AztecSportsReport, was the first to report the news and Green confirmed his decision with Inside the Hall on Saturday evening.

“This decision was so hard,” Green said. “It was so hard on me. But I had to base everything off of grad school. That’s the reason why I left (LSU) was for my education.”

Green, who graduated from LSU on Friday, chose San Diego State over Indiana, Long Beach State and Wichita State.

The 6-foot-11 center averaged 6.3 points and 5.1 rebounds in 18 minutes per game last year for the Tigers.

Green said his visit to Bloomington on July 22 and 23 was almost enough to sway him towards the Hoosiers.

“Coach (Tom) Crean absolutely blew me away,” he said. “I think he’s an amazing coach. He’s a really, really good guy. When I came down there on my visit, he was helping me out so much. I couldn’t ask for more.”

Green will join a San Diego State program that finished 34-3 a season ago but will be tasked with replacing four starters, including the No. 15 pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, Kawhi Leonard.

While the Hoosiers finished as his runner-up, the California native had nothing but positive remarks for the IU program.

“I still believe in Indiana. I know how bad they want it,” he said. “From playing pick up and talking with them, just talking basketball, they all want it.”

I have to admit having eaten at In-n-Out and Fat Burger that it’s a tough thing to walk away from!  HA

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

I’m not hating but it’s hard to respect a program who’s claim to fame may be 30 seconds away from knocking off IU in a down decade.  The five banners and storied history give us the right (at least a little) to look down our noses at the wannabees of college basketball!

    HOO HOO HOOSIERS!!!

Again, not trying to offend, just being honest and funny.

Maybe the name recker means more to this poser than we all realize?

I agree that “back” probably isn’t the word yet.  This is (in my opinion) the last year in the rebuilding process.  Next year the top rated class comes in along with strong upperclassmen, especially if Mo Creek is healthy, and we should be good again and “relevant” year in and year out.

I see this year as the final year in the blueprint for success and that’s just about what I expected.  I thought by the fifth year we should be competing for a Big Ten title and be a national threat again if CTC was the man for the job and by all measures to this point he’s got the program pointed in the right direction.

What remains to be seen is if he can coach the talent and if his system is capable of maximizing talent.  If it is then this should be a close call year for the NCAA tournament (maybe we get in and maybe we don’t) and then next year we should be really good.  If he isn’t the man for the job and his system doesn’t work then we should know by the end of next year for sure, again, in my humble opinion!

I would agree with your timeline.  It’s hard to judge his coaching abilities because we’ve been playing without a true point guard or any kind of post presence since he got here.  If you want to blame him for not recruiting them, that’s fine, but it’s not like he didn’t try.  You add to that one of the two or three guys who could get his own shot (Creek) has been battling knee injuries the last two years and it makes for “What in the world are they doing out there?” conversations.

I think this is the year that you can begin holding Crean’s feet to the fire, as the expectations are for improvement.

This kid wanted to make the tourney so I don’t blame him for passing on us.

Good luck Garrett. Being an optomist i believe in the kids we have a shot at the tourney. I know it would be nice to get another big for some floor time and foul trouble situations that arise but our kids are a little older now,  the other schools wont be banging on freshmen and sophmores. GO I.U.    CTC great job, keep looking !!!

Hey, I just moved to the Fort Mill area south of Charlotte. You know of any IU hangouts out here? I’m guessing the SC stands for S. Carolina

  • Bucky

I hadn’t heard we’re going to recruit him.  Are we for sure, or were you joking?

    We don’t expect 34-3…

The people drinking the kool aid say elite 8 caliber, the pessimists say nit.

I, personally, fall in between somewhere. We could very well end up in the NIT, but barring injury, suspension, etc. I’d say we place between 1 and 3 in the MW (win the tourney either way since Vegas is Viejas East), and end up in the round of 32 after winning the opening round game.

Lots of experience on this team, and if we get Carlwell (6th year) and Polee (st johns transfer), the sky is the limit.

I’ll guess 22-23+ wins before postseason play starts. Impressive considering our OOC as well.

This board is getting bogged down by people that just seem to want to disagree  about something. You are talking about recruits, I am expressing an opinion about the current state of the IU program and how it affected Green’s decision.

Read my first reply, and learn something from it.

  • MillaRed

    No doubt. Baby steps PhD………

  • MillaRed

Does anyone else find it crazy that there are SDSU fans on ITH? I mean, that is pretty awesome really. Goes to show the non-IU crowds have cream and crimson on their minds.

I got ya and I respect the program and all its history but obviously Green feels this was the right place for him to be.  That wasn’t our claim to fame, I think last year’s sweet 16 squad has to be the claim to fame and Daburns, I started reading on here to track the Green recruitment so chill hater.

    See ya…..

  • MillaRed

Are you seriously trolling an IU web site? First of all, you have cheater boy Steve Fisher, which is very Calaparish in our eyes. Secondly, we wish Green luck, it isn’t personal. Just some venting going on.

Did I mention you are trolling an IU website?….and your team will not be very good. Not very good at all.

According to Jody Demling, IU, Kentucky, and a couple of other schools plan to make heavy pitches for the kid. He’s considered a top 25 recruit in his class, so I can see a lot of teams checking him out.

The MW has been around for a dozen years and has sent 2 teams every year save 1.  Sent 3 or more half the time.  Has sent 3 top 3 seeds over44 the last 2 years.  The big 10 is a great conference, but you really need to see what’s happening out west – the MW has established itself.

You aren’t the first to say this, but I chose your comment – be grateful (joking).

I can see situations where we go for a guy like this when we are “back.” Think about how things can happen in a big program – you have people transfer, guys get injured, people go to the NBA, etc. Green, who is by all accounts an intelligent, good guy, had 1 year of eligibility. He helps your GPA, puts in some decent stats, and makes practice harder without losing your scholarship numbers for the next year.

In what universe are you all living in that a guy like this doesn’t have a place at IU when we are winning national championships? Even if we were mopping the floor with the B1G right now, why would we not want Green given our scholarship situation?

That is not to say that he will be some sort of “missing link,” but I don’t think he was the “missing link” a lot of people thought he was. I think he is just a solid grab for any team looking for some presence down low, which we need.

  • INUnivHoosier

I think it definitely came down to him wanting to go to school in the place he wanted to live. It certainly helps when you are networking with the people who will likely be hiring you.

I sincerely hope the difference doesn’t hinge on strong point play or we’re in for more disappointment.  Everything I’m reading is saying VJIII is still going to play the point (and undoubtedly stand just over half-court and dribble the air out of the ball) this year.  Maybe we’re trying to help him set the career turnovers record!!

I think this guys response tells you all you need to know about where IU is as a fan base, and where SDSU is.  I wouldn’t go on an Alabama football site and give them crap for Gunner Kiel going to IU.  Same thing.

The kid had a real chance of being famous and making IU a better team…..I guess we both lose out in these regards.  I think in different recruiting situations we would have landed him..aka midnight madness.  I wish him good luck but only because I don’t wish bad on any decent people.  Any big left?

Good point, I didn’t think about that.  Still, it’s not like he’s playing in the Patriot League.

And as for the women—I get it.  I wish I’d have had that kind of eye candy at USI.  There may be one other woman he’s thinking about that you guys aren’t considering–his mother.  She’s not as far away and I bet (in Garrett’s eyes,) she’s the best cook in the world!
