Podcast on the Brink: Don Fischer

by in Podcast on the Brink | December 20th, 2011

Podcast On The Brink returns this week with a visit from legendary play-by-play announcer Don Fischer to discuss Indiana’s 11-0 start and his call of IU’s buzzer-beating victory over top-ranked Kentucky.

Fischer, who is in his 39th year as the “Voice of the Hoosiers,” gives his take on IU’s turnaround season as well as what its been like to cover the Hoosiers this season in comparison to the recent past. Fischer also gives an inside look into his call of Christian Watford’s game-winning three and talks about where the moment ranks personally in games he’s called over the years.

“The Voice” also compares Cody Zeller to Kent Benson and explains why the freshman might be ahead of the curve compared to the former great. Fischer goes into detail on why Zeller is so effective and points out other players who have been instrumental to IU’s success this season.

Dan Dakich and Don Fischer talk toughness, fragility

by in Media | January 25th, 2011

If you’re not following us on Twitter, you might have missed the link I tossed out last night to a podcast of Don Fischer’s weekly appearance on The Dan Dakich Show.

This segment is a must-listen each week for IU fans as Fischer and Dakich offer candid analysis. A lot of interesting stuff, but nothing more so than the following:

Dakich: This is the wrong thing to say, OK, but this is what real coaching is. When the season’s over, there’s gonna have to be a couple of these guys make a decision on whether or not they want to stay here. And there might actually be a couple of them that the decision’s going to be made for ‘em. There’s too much fragility, mentally, among some of these guys and you know what? Some of them aren’t freshmen. There’s not freshmen and at some point, you know what, hey, we’re paying about about 30 grand a year to come here and do this and if everything’s so fragile, maybe the MAC’s for you, not the big time.

Fischer: (Laughs)

Dakich: I mean, truthfully.

Fischer: (Laughs) No, the reason I’m laughing Dak is because now I don’t have to say it.

Dakich: Well, it’s true. (Laughs) Hey, every game, big life, big stage, Big Ten, right?

Fischer: That’s right. (Laughs)

Dakich: It’s a big stage, Indiana basketball.

Fischer: That’s exactly right and the frustration level is at probably an all-time high in the sense of how this coach and his staff are looking at it right now, I can tell you that.

Dakich: The problem is, nowadays, then the guy goes to the paper: “well, Crean kicked me off.” Yeah, well, tough.

Royce Waltman joins IU basketball radio team

by in Media | October 7th, 2010

We mentioned this on Monday, but here’s the official release from IU and Learfield Sports:

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Oct. 7, 2010) –Indiana University Sports Properties announced that celebrated collegiate basketball coach Royce Waltman will join Don Fischer in the broadcast booth as color commentator for the Hoosiers’ 2010-2011 season. Long-time pre game and post game host Joe Smith will begin his 28th year on the broadcast team.

“Royce is one of the most highly respected coaches in his profession,” said Fischer, who is in his 38th year as the “Voice of the Hoosiers”. “His knowledge of basketball and his background at almost every level of the game will add much to our broadcasts.”

Waltman boasts an already familiar tie to IU having served as an assistant coach with Head Coach Bobby Knight from 1982-1987. He then become head coach for DePauw University (1988-1992), University of Indianapolis (1992-’97) and Indiana State University (1997–2007). He won 100 or more games at each of these schools and led all three to the NCAA National Tournament. Most recently, he had returned to coaching at the high school ranks serving as assistant coach at Roncalli High School in Indianapolis.

“Royce is an accomplished collegiate coach with hometown appeal who we felt certain would be the perfect addition to work alongside Don Fischer calling Hoosier games,” said Rob Louthain, general manager for Indiana University Sports Properties (IUSP).

On behalf of Indiana University Athletics, IUSP oversees management of every aspect of the IU Radio Network.

“As an assistant basketball coach at IU, I gained great admiration for the program and all its tradition.,” said Waltman. “It is with great pleasure that I return to the IU family.”
