Oladipo scores career-high 26 in win over No. 1 Gonzaga

by in Recruiting | February 23rd, 2010

Victor Oladipo isn’t known for putting up a lot of points. But when needed, the IU signee from DeMatha is certainly capable. Such was the case last night as Oladipo scored a career-high 26 in a 73-69 win over No. 1 Gonzaga.

Josh Barr of The Washington Post talked to the 6-4 forward about his performance:

“When my team needs me to score, I can score the basketball,” said Oladipo, who previously had scored 20 points just once in his high school career. “Just because I don’t usually score a lot of points doesn’t mean I can’t score.”

The upset win wrapped up the No. 1 seed in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference for the Stags, who are 25-3 overall and 16-1 in conference.

Abraham to decide in early March, hopes to make Northwestern game

by in Recruiting | February 22nd, 2010

The hardest part about coaching Moses Abraham? Keeping him hydrated.

“He just doesn’t stop running,” Joe Boncore, Abraham’s guardian, told Inside the Hall on Monday night. Abraham, a 6-foot-9 forward from Progressive Christian in Temple Hills, Md., picked up an offer from Indiana last week, personally delivered by Tom Crean.

The Hoosiers joined an impressive list of suitors for the young man, who also has offers from, among others, Georgetown, Tennessee, Texas, UCLA, Connecticut and Kansas State.

Thus far, Boncore said, Abraham has made his greatest impact on the defensive end of the floor using a 7-foot-3 wingspan to block shots and rebound.

“Moses is a big eraser,” Boncore said. “He plays above the rim.”

Abraham, a Nigerian native who was studying to become a priest before he decided to focus on basketball full-time, possesses a high level of athleticism Boncore said Indiana could use on its front line.

But most of the talk surrounding Abraham focuses on his defensive ability, a big reason why Crean’s approach got Abraham’s attention.

“He was talking about Moses on the offensive end too,” Boncore said. “Coach Crean likes the way he always wants the ball.”

Abraham is working on his offensive game with a former trainer of Kevin Durant, also a D.C.-area product. While Boncore said Abraham would never be expected to score quite so prolifically as the former Texas All-American, he said Moses’ potential and work ethic create a high ceiling for the forward to reach.

Telep: Moses Abraham to visit IU for Wisconsin game

by in Recruiting | February 22nd, 2010

Last Thursday, Indiana coach Tom Crean made the trip to Progressive Christian Academy in Camp Springs (MD) to watch 6-9, 235-pound forward Moses Abraham.

And now, the Nigerian native will visit Bloomington for Thursday’s game against Wisconsin, according to Dave Telep of Scout.com.

Scout.com lists Abraham, a member of the 2010 class, as a three-star prospect while Rivals.com lists him as a four-star prospect.

We’ll hopefully have more on this development in the coming days.

New basketball practice facility named Cook Hall

by in Media | February 21st, 2010

Here’s the lengthy press release, which just popped into our inbox:

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- Indiana University President Michael McRobbie and Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass today announced the single largest gift in the history of the department of athletics.  The Cook Group has made a $15 million gift to the For the Glory of Old IU capital campaign, which will be most immediately utilized to support and enhance the new basketball development center for the benefit of the men and women basketball program student athletes.  In recognition of this historic gift, Indiana University will permanently name the new basketball development center “Cook Hall”.  That naming was approved by the Indiana University Board of Trustees at its Friday meeting in Kokomo.

The Cook gift to IU Athletics is only part of the support that the Cooks have provided to IU through the years.  The family and the company have given generously to academic areas of the University including the School of Music, the School of Medicine, School of Education, and Wells Scholars Program and have endowed several academic chairs.  It is noteworthy that even this gift to Athletics will primarily support a facility dedicated to the instruction and preparation of men and women student athletes.

The Minute After: Minnesota

by in The Minute After | February 20th, 2010

FINAL SCORE: Minnesota 81, Indiana 58

Here’s an easy way to game plan against the Hoosiers: pound it inside all game long.

As the Spartans showed us Tuesday and the Gophers displayed this evening — it works. IU just doesn’t have the length, athleticism or the skill to guard the block, and guys like Ralph Sampson III took advantage.  Minnesota’s guards also beat IU off the dribble on several occasions, leading to some easy points right around the rim. The Gophers scored 38 of their 81 points in the paint this evening to IU’s 16.

And when they weren’t hitting down low, they were raining threes. Minnesota hit 7-of-11 in the first half and hit 9-of-20 for the game for 45 percent. IU only shot 32 percent from the floor. Ouch.

The Hoosiers simply aren’t defending as of late. This now marks the eighth straight game their opponent has shot better from the field, to coincide with their eighth straight loss. And during this eight-game losing streak, IU has also only managed to shoot better than 40 percent twice — against Wisconsin and Purdue.

When you fail to get points in the paint and your shot gets blocked at an alarming rate  — in total, the Hoosiers get 12.7 percent of their shots blocked, which ranks them 332 out of the 347 Division I teams in the country — it’s hard to shoot a high percentage or be efficient, especially when your jump shots aren’t falling. Add in all the turnovers and the scoring droughts — IU failed to hit a field goal for a stretch of 9:15 in the first half; they only made two shots the last 6:05 of the second half — and you can see why the Hoosiers’ offense has struggled so bad.

If nothing else, this team is still finding a way to get to the line: they shot 22 — though only made 14 — free throws on the night to the Gophers’ 14. Without that in recent games, it’d be more ugly than it is.

“Outgunned and outmanned,” is how Kendall Gill described this one for IU tonight. I have a feeling this won’t be the last time we’ll be able to describe such a loss for this team before season’s end.
