IU basketball is a No. 7 seed in updated ESPN bracketology for 2027 NCAA tournament

Most of the transfer portal activity in college basketball has concluded and rosters are mostly set for the 2026-27 season, which will tip off in early November.

ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi recently updated his 2027 NCAA tournament projections, including Indiana as a No. 7 seed.

The program had significant roster turnover in the spring following an NCAA tournament miss in year one of the Darian DeVries era.

Indiana added seven players from the transfer portal and added four freshmen for the second roster of the DeVries tenure.

Sophomore Trent Sisley is the only returning scholarship player for the Hoosiers. The Southern Indiana native averaged 4.2 points and 2.8 rebounds in 13.1 minutes per game last season.

The roster is headlined by Notre Dame transfer Markus Burton, Villanova transfer Bryce Lindsay, Alabama transfer Aiden Sherrell, SMU transfer Samet Yigitoglu and Duke transfer Darren Harris.

The Hoosiers also added Georgia Tech transfer Jaeden Mustaf and Maryland Eastern Shore transfer Justin Monden.

In its freshman class, the Hoosiers welcome Prince-Alexander Moody, Vaughn Karvala, Trevor Manhertz and Clemens Sokolov.

The program has missed the last three NCAA tournaments, but there’s optimism about returning to March Madness in the spring of 2027.

Indiana is one of 13 Big Ten teams in Lunardi’s latest projections, which he typically updates each month during the offseason.

The NCAA tournament field is expanding to 76 teams next season, with eight additional at-large spots.

The other Big Ten teams included are Michigan (No. 1 seed), Illinois (No. 1), Michigan State (No. 2), Purdue (No. 4), USC (No. 6), Nebraska (No. 7), Ohio State (No. 9), UCLA (No. 9), Wisconsin (No. 9), Iowa (No. 11), Oregon (No. 11) and Maryland (No. 12).

The other projected No. 1 seeds are Duke and Florida.

The Hoosiers are expected to open the 2026-27 regular season on Monday, November 2, against Eastern Illinois at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
