Alabama transfer Aiden Sherrell commits to IU basketball

One of the most coveted frontcourt players in the transfer portal, Alabama forward Aiden Sherrell, committed to IU basketball today.

Sherell has two seasons of eligibility remaining. He is the fifth transfer portal commitment for the Hoosiers, joining Jaeden Mustaf (Georgia Tech), Darren Harris (Duke), Markus Burton (Notre Dame) and Samet Yigitoglu (SMU).

The 6-foot-11, 255-pound forward is a native of Detroit, Michigan and was a 2024 McDonald’s All-American. Sherrell played high school basketball at Prolific Prep (Calif.) and before that, had stops at Norcross High School in Georgia, Wasatch Academy in Utah and Hillcrest Prep in Arizona.

Over 70 career games under Nate Oats at Alabama, Sherrell averaged 7.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.2 blocked shots and 0.7 assists in 16.1 minutes per game.

As a freshman during the 2024-25 campaign on an Elite Eight team, Sherrell averaged 3.4 points and 2.7 rebounds in 36 games as a backup. He reached double figures in scoring two games, including a season-high 12 points in a win against Georgia.

His minutes increased substantially in his sophomore season for Alabama, which reached the Sweet Sixteen. He started 34 of Alabama’s 36 games as the primary big man in the rotation and averaged 11.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.2 blocked shots and 1.1 assists in 23.9 minutes per game.

Sherrell had two games with eight blocked shots, which included a 90-84 win against Clemson and a 96-75 loss to Arizona.

The talented forward recorded three double-doubles, with his standout game coming against Arkansas in a double-overtime victory. He finished with 26 points and 13 rebounds in that win.

His rim protection should be a significant asset for the Hoosiers defensively. Last season in SEC play, Sherrell’s block percentage (6.6) was seventh best in the conference.

He should also give the Hoosiers a legitimate post-up scoring threat who can finish plays and get to the line. Sherrell shot 64 percent on 2s last season and was 67.1 percent on 2s in league play.

He had a free-throw rate (FTA/FGA) of 66.4 percent in conference games and shot 79.7 percent from the stripe in SEC play. He was a 33.8 percent 3-point shooter on 80 attempts last season.

Sherrell scouting report

“Sherrell has great size and is capable of playing out on the perimeter. For such a big guy, he can flip his hips and re-screen fairly quickly. Whoever lands him is getting a player who has had a good education in the pick-and-roll game after two years at Alabama. He isn’t quick off the ground but has good touch. He’s also made 41 3s at a 33.6 percent clip in two seasons. He’s closer to average as a shooter, but at least good enough that he can’t be left alone. He has the type of skill where it’s likely he’d have success as a back-to-the-basket scorer, but that’s just not something Alabama does.

“Defensively, Sherrell moves his feet well for a guy of his build and can defend without fouling (3.5 fouls per 40 minutes). He defends with his chest, and you’re not moving him. He can block shots both on the ball and as a help-side defender and had an 8.5 percent block rate.” – The Athletic

“Coach Nate Oats expanded Sherrell’s role this past season. He was one of the best bigs in SEC conference play, improving from an average of 3.4 points and 2.8 rebounds to 11.1 points and 6.2 rebounds. He had 15 points and 15 rebounds in an NCAA tournament win over Hofstra; he also went for 26 points and 13 rebounds in a February win over Arkansas.” – Jeff Borzello, ESPN.com
