Hoosiers enter top ten for first time since 2008

by in Media | January 9th, 2012

When Indiana takes the floor at Assembly Hall against Minnesota on Thursday evening, the Hoosiers will do so as a top ten team in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN coaches top 25 polls.

After a pair of wins over Michigan and Penn State, Indiana jumped five spots in the AP Poll and four spots in the coaches poll.

The Hoosiers were last ranked No. 7 in the AP Poll on Jan. 21, 2008 and No. 8 in the coaches poll on that same date.

Four Big Ten teams — Ohio State, Michigan State, Indiana and Michigan — are ranked in the top 15 in both polls.

Hoosiers rise to No. 12, but should they be higher?

by in Media | January 2nd, 2012

Fresh off a 74-70 win over No. 2 Ohio State on Saturday night in Assembly Hall, Indiana received a bump in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN coaches’ Top 25 Polls.

Despite a loss earlier in the week at Michigan State, Indiana jumped up one spot to No. 12 in the AP Poll and climbed three spots to No. 12 in the coaches’ poll.

But even with the upward movement for the Hoosiers in both polls, there’s still one team ahead of IU that’s drawing some controversy from the national media: Louisville.

Eamonn Brennan, our former ITH colleague and now of ESPN.com, weighs-in:

And this is why the polls are the polls: At this point, of course Indiana deserves to be ranked higher. The Hoosiers are 13-1 with a win over Kentucky and a win over Ohio State; few teams outside of UNLV can boast one win of that quality, let alone two. Indiana’s only loss came on the road at now-No. 11 Michigan State. Contrast that with Louisville, whose best win is probably a 62-60 overtime victory over a then-struggling Vanderbilt team. The Cardinals lost twice last week, and while the Kentucky loss was actually somewhat impressive — the Cardinals hung tough on the road with a much more talented team — the disappointing home performance to Georgetown early in the week raised appropriate questions about this team’s true quality. If you’re willing to use per-possession statistics as even a general sign of ability — and why wouldn’t you be? — Indiana’s numbers rank them among the best seven or eight teams in the nation. As of Monday, Louisville is ranked No. 17.

Hoosiers enter AP, coaches poll for first time since 2008

by in Media | December 12th, 2011

For the first time since the late stages of the 2007-2008 season, Indiana is among the top 25 teams in the country.

The 9-0 Hoosiers, who received votes in both the Associated Press poll and the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll a week ago, broke into the rankings thanks to a dramatic 73-72 win over No. 1 Kentucky on Saturday.

Indiana is No. 18 in the AP poll and No. 20 in the coaches poll.

On the first Big Ten coaches teleconference of the season Monday morning, Tom Crean was asked about his team potentially entering the top 25 by Dustin Dopirak of The Bloomington Herald-Times.

“It’s not like it would be a disappointment if we weren’t, but I’d be shocked if we weren’t at the same time,” he said. “These players have earned it. I’m really excited for what’s ahead for this team.

“The biggest thing is they stay locked in to their own expectations. I think that’s what’s so important. … That they continue to understand improvement, unity, togetherness, offensive and defensive fundamentals, the preparation that they’ve put forth. That’s what’s been so good for this team.”

Indiana last appeared in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll at No. 24 on March 17, 2008.

The ranking in the Associated Press poll is the program’s first since being placed at No. 18 on March 3, 2008.

The top five teams are Memphis, Duke, Kansas, Tennessee and North Carolina.

The Big Ten also honored Robbie Hummel of Purdue with Player of the Week honors after his 21 points helped the Boilermakers knock off then No. 8 Wisconsin in Madison. The win gave Purdue sole possession of first place in the conference.

Kelvin SampsonAs expected following Saturday’s 68-63 loss to Connecticut, Indiana took a tumble in the ESPN/USA Today coaches’ poll released Monday afternoon.

Indiana (17-2) is now No. 11, just ahead of their opponent on Thursday, No. 13 Wisconsin. Michigan State is the highest ranked Big Ten team at No. 7.

The top four spots in the poll remained unchanged: Memphis, Kansas, Duke and North Carolina.

Connecticut is the second team listed under “others receiving votes” after snapping IU’s 29-game winning streak at Assembly Hall.

Update: The Hoosiers are also No. 11 in the Associated Press poll.

Hoosiers climb to No. 8 in coaches poll

by in Media | January 21st, 2008

Eric GordonIndiana is No. 8 in the latest ESPN/USA Today coaches poll released earlier this afternoon. The Hoosiers are one of three Big Ten teams ranked in the top 11. So much for the Big Ten being “down” this season.

Michigan State is No. 10 and Wisconsin, the next road opponent for the Hoosiers in the Big Ten, is No. 11.

Memphis is the new No. 1 and received 21 of the possible 31 first place votes. Rounding out the top five: Kansas, Duke, North Carolina and Tennessee.

What are your thoughts on where the Hoosiers sit in the coaches poll? Too high? Too low? Just right?

(Note: The Associated Press Poll will be released later this afternoon.)
