Report: Indiana out of the running for Josh Selby

by Alex Bozich in Recruiting | February 15th, 2010

It appears Indiana fans will have to wait until at least the 2011-2012 season to watch the first five-star recruit of the Tom Crean era play in Bloomington.

Josh Selby, the 2010 combo guard from Baltimore who is rated the No. 10 player in the country by Scout.com, is no longer listing the Hoosiers as a possible destination.

Evan Daniels, a national recruiting analyst for Scout.com, broke the news earlier this afternoon:

“Right now we’re really considering all of the schools on a equal playing field,” Maeshon Witherspoon, Selby’s mother, told Daniels. “It’s the two that we visited and the other two that we plan to visit. I don’t think that it’s in our schedule to get back to Indiana again. I don’t think we are going to visit Syracuse.”

With Indiana and Syracuse not getting visits, Selby’s list is down to four – Arizona, Kansas, Connecticut and Kentucky.

Indiana was long believed to be a long shot to land Selby, having jumped into the race shortly after Kyrie Irving eliminated the Hoosiers from his list.

Indiana has two signees for its 2010 class — Sagemont (FL) wing Will Sheehey and DeMatha (MD) wing Victor Oladipo — and has, on paper, one scholarship remaining for next season.

Zagoria via sources: Arizona, Kansas lead for Selby

by Alex Bozich in Recruiting | January 20th, 2010

If there’s been one common question among the recruiting chatter fans partake in on this here site, it’s this: When is Indiana going to land a five-star recruit?

I could argue that Maurice Creek and Christian Watford warranted five-star consideration, but hey, I’m not Dave Telep, Jerry Meyer or Clark “Ivan Renko” Francis.

The name Josh Selby still comes up quite a bit when discussing Indiana’s recruiting efforts for its 2010 class. Selby, a five-star point guard from the Baltimore area, added Indiana to his list shortly after Kyrie Irving eliminated the Hoosiers.

Selby took an official visit to Bloomington on November 14 and since that time, information about his interest in IU has been scarce. The Lake Clifton guard, who originally committed to Tennessee, is not speaking to the media about his recruitment.

So here’s the latest on Selby: According to Adam Zagoria, one of the better recruiting reporters on the east coast, Selby is favoring Kansas and Arizona. Kentucky is also in good shape, but John Calipari seems to be focused on chasing the nation’s No. 1 player, Brandon Knight.

As much as fans continue to hold out hope for Selby, the reality is that Indiana remains a long shot.

Video: Josh Selby likes to dunk (and pass, too)

by Alex Bozich in Video | December 23rd, 2009

I, like many of you, have a hard time believing that Indiana is a legit contender for the services of 2010 five-star point guard Josh Selby. But alas, the Hoosiers are still on his list and that fact means we must keep an eye on his recruitment and hold out for a miracle.

In the following video, which was brought to my attention via a tweet from Selby himself, you can see why Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl is probably still losing sleep over Selby’s de-commitment and schools like Arizona are racing to get involved with this kid. In the words of Bill Raftery … The elevation, extraordinary! The deployment, superior!

Report: Indiana secures official visit from Josh Selby

by Alex Bozich in Recruiting | October 31st, 2009

According to a report late on Friday evening from Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Jerry Meyer, Indiana will host five-star guard Josh Selby for an official visit on November 14. The Hoosiers will open the season on November 13 at Assembly Hall against Howard.

Selby, who is ranked No. 4 in the 2010 class by Rivals, is also considering Kansas, Kentucky, Miami (FL) and Syracuse. He took an unofficial visit to Kansas on the weekend of October 16 for “Late Night in the Phog.”

A former teammate of Victor Oladipo, Selby left DeMatha after his junior season and will play his senior season at Lake Clifton.

Josh Selby to set visit schedule on Wednesday

by Alex Bozich in Recruiting | October 12th, 2009

According to a tweet from Adam Zagoria, five-star guard Josh Selby will set his schedule for official visits on Wednesday. The Lake Clifton (MD) standout is considering Baylor, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Miami and Syracuse.

TheShiver.com reported Monday afternoon that Selby will take him on an unofficial trip to Kansas this weekend where he’ll attend “Late Night in the Phog” at Allen Fieldhouse. He’ll be unable to take official visits until he takes the ACT or SAT.

Kansas, Kentucky and Syracuse are the three schools considered to be in the best position for No. 4 player in the 2010 class on Rivals.com.

Josh Selby trims list to six, Hoosiers in the mix

by Alex Bozich in Recruiting | September 27th, 2009

Despite entering the race for Josh Selby less than two weeks ago, Indiana made the list of six schools still in the running for the Lake Clifton (MD) guard. Evan Daniels of Scout.com broke the news on Sunday evening:

“Tonight we sat down as a family and discussed all the schools that were recruiting Josh,” Meashon Witherspoon, Selby’s mother, told Daniels. “We evaluated every school in depth and composed a list of schools we wanted to further explore.”

Also in the running for Selby: Baylor, Kansas, Kentucky, Miami and Syracuse. He’s not expected to sign until the spring and has yet to set up any official visits. Selby is rated the No. 10 player in the 2010 class by Scout.com and No. 4 by Rivals.com.

Josh Selby seems to be fairly athletic

by Alex Bozich in Recruiting | September 21st, 2009

In case you failed to update your recruiting calendar, Indiana’s impromptu in-home visit with Josh Selby is tomorrow. According to The Indianapolis Star, the Lake Clifton (MD) senior is also considering Kansas, Baylor, Connecticut, Syracuse, Miami, Florida State, Oregon and Kentucky.

While it seems highly unlikely that Indiana could jump in on Selby at this stage of the game, all indications are that the Hoosiers have done just that. With that said, in honor of Tuesday’s visit, I searched the Interwebs for video of the No. 4 prospect on Rivals.com and came up with a solid compilation. (At the least, you owe it to yourself to watch the crossover at the 45-second mark.) Enjoy it after the jump …

Indiana to visit 2010 five-star guard Josh Selby

by Alex Bozich in Recruiting | September 17th, 2009

selby091709aAdd another five-star guard to Indiana’s 2010 wish list. The Hoosier staff will visit the home of 2010 guard Josh Selby next Tuesday according to his mother, Maeshown Witherspoon. Selby, who de-committed from Tennessee over the summer, is rated No. 4 nationally by Rivals.com and No. 10 by Scout.com.

Jody Demling of The Louisville Courier-Journal has the scoop:

“Indiana is new,” Witherspoon said. “It was last night. But what I told everybody is that it was going to be hard to make a decision because we were not going to exclude any schools.

“I could never do a list because we didn’t want to count anybody out. Coach (Roshwon) McLeod was the point man and I have also talked to coach (Tom) Crean.”

Witherspoon said the coaches didn’t talk about Kyrie Irving or the late inquiry about Selby only saying they “apologized” for not getting involved sooner. Irving has long been an IU target but the Hoosiers are battling Duke, Kentucky and Texas A&M for Irving.

“Coach McLeod and I had a real good conversation and then Coach Crean and I had another good conversation. They said they wanted to come in and do an in-home and we’re fine with it.”

We’re not sure how, if at all, this news affects Indiana’s pursuit of Kyrie Irving, who recently announced an official visit to Kentucky on October 15. Selby played with IU commit Victor Oladipo last season at DeMatha but transferred to Lake Clifton (MD) for his senior season.

A video feature on Selby that was first published last year by The Washington Post is embedded after the jump …
