Report: Thomas Bryant agrees to guaranteed deal with Lakers

Former Indiana forward Thomas Bryant has agreed to a two-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo! Sports.

Bryant, the No. 42 pick in last month’s NBA draft, will have a guarantee for next season and a team option for the 2018-19 season, according to Charania’s report.

The Lakers had just over $800,000 remaining in salary cap room for next season, which limited the deal they could offer Bryant.

In eight games as a reserve for the Lakers in the Vegas Summer League, Bryant averaged 5.1 points and 3.3 rebounds in 13.4 minutes per game.

The Lakers won the Vegas Summer League title.

Bryant averaged 12.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 blocks in 28.1 minutes per game as a sophomore in Bloomington.

Congratulation, TB.. Proud to call you a Hoosier…

Really happy for TB. I had said I thought he would earn a day 1 roster spot but (other than his first game) his performance in the summer league I thought he had a better chance to initially get one of the new two-way contracts.

Crean put some guys in the league. Great character guys too. i wish Indiana pacers hire the guy as an assistant

    Geat news! Stay hungry, Thomas!

Happy for Thomas! Hopefully his game continues to develop and he finds his niche

Just what I thought as well. It may actually have helped him that they “only” had $800,000 left to give. That is a tiny amount by their standards, nowhere near enough to get a top player, but also not enough to matter if TB never scores a point. Not that that is what I’m predicting, I’m just saying that financially and strategically this makes sense for the Lakers. Now he has a year to prove he belongs, and I hope mightily he does.

I think you are spot on. If you are just filling the roster, might as well fill it with a high character guy who has some interesting potential skills.

  • TomJameson

Exactly. Not just to prove he belongs, but to work hard at his new job developing his body and skills. Bet he’s going to grow into a beast.

    GO TB.

So does anyone know how much of the $800,000 Thomas will get?

  • Outoftheloop

No! But the Pacers do need a real plan to develop a “team”. Why no effort to sign George Hill?

  • Indiana_Banners

Not only can you not get a top player for $800,000, you probably can’t get a useful bench player either. Derrick Rose just got 2.1m to be a backup point guard in Cleveland and that is a TINY deal in today’s NBA, doesn’t get much smaller than that for players that have survived a couple years already.

Team option second year… no way not to say hungry with the sword hanging above your head like Damocles…

Was really hoping the Lakers would have picked up Thomas Robinson. The guy fit the role of the muscle that we needed on the floor, and he bought the hard work every game he played in.

    And great potential!
