Will Sheehey suffers left lower leg injury

by in Media | December 22nd, 2011

From an IU Athletics release:

Sophomore Will Sheehey has a left lower leg injury that he sustained in practice Wednesday and his status will be evaluated each day.

With Sheehey likely out for Thursday’s game with UMBC, the Hoosiers will have just five scholarship bench players available — Austin Etherington, Daniel Moore, Matt Roth, Remy Abell and Tom Pritchard.

Derek Elston is also sidelined following surgery to repair a fracture in his nose.

Sheehey is averaging 10.7 points and 3.3 rebounds in 20 minutes per game.

Commence the puking, I feel sick!  At least it looks as if it could possibly a sprain, not a break.  Hence the evaluating everyday comment.  Lets hope and pray hes alright!

Hoosier Scoop reporting a source believes Sheehey…”could be out for a while.”  A while could very well mean the Michigan State, Ohio State and Michigan games.  No doubt, we didn’t need this.  Get well soon Will.

  • Stlbam

Time for Etherington to step up.

    rut ro. not good.

So who’s first off without Sheehey or Elston? Abell and Pritchard I’m guessing? More Roth and AE now?

Alex (or anyone else on staff), are there any indications this is a serious injury?  Having him out tonight shouldn’t hurt too much but he will be significantly missed against MSU, OSU and Michigan.   Basically, is there concern from the coaches and trainers that this will keep Will out for several games?

Thanks for the continued excellent work

  • Casey B.

    Of course.

There have been some reports that the injury could keep him out longer than just tonight, but I’ve heard nothing first hand as of yet to substantiate those claims.

Longer than tonight or significant?  Are we talking 2-3 weeks or a couple of months?  I know you probably don’t have information you feel comfortable running but if you know something, we would love to hear it (if it’s good news haha).

Rest up Will!  Guys the biggest impact off the bench and is a huge part of winning some of the early conference games.  Hope it’s not too serious.  And speaking of not too serious, what is Coach McClain doing to his hand in that picture.  Whatever it is he is very focused.

To watch the game tonight try first row sports

Our first 3 big ten games you might see both Zeller and Oladipo get 35 minutes a piece. Let’s hope our horses can carry the team. Going deeper to the bench against MSU and OSU could be disastrous.

This is bad. Hopefully this is nothing serious because we need him at 100% for the start of B10 season.

  • Anonymous

Elston will have to step up. If he cant get 10 pts per game, then he should sit. Lets hope it isnt a high ankle sprain. Get well Will.

  • Anonymous

Abell is definitely going to have to play well as will Pritchard.

Just 5 scholarship bench players is better than just 8 or 9 scholarship players total they had 4 years ago. Depth we have now is much better, thankfully, we’ll be ok in the long run

  • EgreenIU

Elston will have to step up in scoring and rebounding!

  • SeattleHoosier

Painful to hear that Elston and Sheehey will be out for a bit.  But – this team will grow stronger by dealing with their absence.

    Hoping both are back soon…

  • The_Real_Assembly_Hall

I think that is just a camera depth illusion of him sticking his out and calling something out to the players on the floor. Lol, makes you do a double take though.

  • The_Real_Assembly_Hall

    Hang in there Will!!

  • Petefaggen

I didn’t realize Elston is going to be out for a bit, as well. Really, could someone please fill me in on his injury situation. I know he has a bad back. Wow, starting the Big Ten without him and Sheehey would be difficult. Thanks!!

  • SHEEHEYisApimp

dear Santa, all I want for Christmas is Will to be healthy. You can remove the hex on OSU and PU that I asked for earlier….a healthy Will the Thrill will suffice.

  • Kaponya13

that sinking feeling in my stomach …not for tonight ,but for next week …ugh !

We’re going to see what kind of depth we have now.

This just sucks. Leave us alone basketball Gods!

Firstly, for Will as well as the team’s sake, let’s hope this isn’t more than just a sprain, he is out for 1-2 weeks and can play through some pain.

Regardless, we’ll see what our boys are made of.  If there was any thought they were going to rest on their laurels for having started 12-0 (jumping the gun a bit, I know) and beating Kentucky, that thought should be vanquished with two meaningful role players not playing and a vaunted B10 opening schedule.
We will need the leadership of Hulls, Victor, Zeller, Verdell, and, yes, Moore and Pritchard.  Watford needs to step up his game big time and our boys will need to show some resolve.

Adversity has presented itself…bring it on.  We haven’t shied away from it before.  I am in no way happy about the injury.  However, I am intrigued to see how we handle it and if his injury isn’t serious it could help us down the road.

    Go Hoosiers!

    Praying for you Will!

Broken nose.  Oladipo got him with an inadvertent elbow in practice and he had surgery.  He could be back by the 28th (wearing a mask).  There’s a story on this site that has the details.

  • millzy32

What doesn’t kill us only makes us stronger right?  Yikes.  Get well soon Sheehey we need you.  BAD.

  • eph521

Elston and Sheehey both hurt in practice. One thing’s for sure about this team… their practices are intense. I don’t like the injuries, but I like the intensity suggested by the fact the injuries occured at practice. Yes Allen Iverson, they occured at practice.

Not cool.  But this will give guys like AE and Remy an opportunity to show why they should get more rotational minutes.  This could make us stronger.  Let’s look at it that way!!

  • The_Real_Assembly_Hall

Abell will be off first and Roth will get some run, but I believe the starters will be spread around more.

  • Petefaggen

Thanks for pointing me to the story! Was out most of yesterday. Tonight, against UMBC this won’t matter. But Dec. 28, wow, that could be interesting. We definitely need AE and RA to step up!

Luckily Elston won’t be out an extended amount of time and if you’re going to be short on players tonight’s game is a good time to be short because, if stats are any indication, UMBC is god-awful.  Jeff Howard may even make a 1st half appearance. Pritchard will obviously get more PT than usual and I hope he uses it to look for his shot and build some confidence.

Roth, Abell and Ethrington will all see significant minutes, and I’d expect a heavier than normal dose of Daniel Moore (who also needs to shoot when he has the opening.)

Victor will have to cut down on his fouling because he’s going to be the only lock-down defender available.

  • markus44

Just 5 huh?  That is still a pretty deep rotation.

“What doesn’t kill us only makes us stronger right?”

Tell that to Mo….and if you’re right he might return next year with the ability to fly.

  • BrianS

A broken nose is one thing,  A lower leg injury that no one will tell us much about is worrisome at the very least.  Here is to hoping that it’s not too serious, but I read crutches were needed on another website.  We’re going to need both of these guys to get where we need to be in the Big 10.

This sucks, but injuries are to be expected throughout the season. That’s why good teams need depth. At least we have one “freebie” game where it doesn’t matter before entering the conference schedule.

Other players can and “will” step up to fill the gap.

The following comes from the Herald Times online chat with Ryan Kartje and Dustin Dopirak.

“Don’t have anything new beyond what was reported last night. Trying to
get a hold of some other sources, but haven’t been successful yet.”

“The original post on various message boards said that he had
stepped on a ball and turned his ankle. Now, what that means, we really
have no idea. It could be anything from a sprain, which would likely
keep him out tonight, but might not keep him out of MSU, or it could be a
high ankle sprain that keeps him out a few weeks.”

    “But again, we don’t
know anything yet. We’ll probably know more after tonight’s game, but
even then, it could be more of a day-to-day thing, based on what we got
in a release last night, which said he would be evaluated each day.
Remember though, this is all speculation. We’ll let you know as soon as
    we know anything.”

So….speculation of a sprained ankle which could be a few days and back for MSU (best case) or a high ankle sprain which could linger for a month or two before he is ready to go full tilt.  Here’s to hoping we find out soon and are happy with the news. By the way, I don’t mean to steal any viewers from HTO…head over there and check out their live chat if you are interested.

I’m sure it has been addressed, but my computer has had the bends for about a week.  Why is Zeller’s arm wrapped up?

  • jgon86

It took me three weeks to heal from my bad leg injury.  With proper medical treatment it should  take around two weeks to properly heal.

  • E.C. Billy Hayes

Someone mentioned Mo Creek in an ESPN board about the Sheehey injury. Mo’s not ready to go is he?
