Hanner Perea joins Indiana’s 2012 recruiting class

by in Recruiting | October 31st, 2010

UPDATED: 2:43 p.m.

Indiana’s 2012 recruiting class just became significantly better.

The news was broken by Evan Daniels of Scout.com: Five-star forward Hanner Perea has given a verbal pledge to the Hoosiers. Perea joins Ron Patterson and Peter Jurkin in IU’s 2012 recruiting class.

The commitment followed a weekend during which IU hosted some of the state’s most talented prospects, including Perea, Cody Zeller, Austin Etherington and Yogi Ferrell. For Perea, it was time to pull the trigger.

In Perea, Indiana adds a player with solid NBA potential and the kind of measurables scouts drool over. A 6-foot-8 forward, Perea possesses great athleticism and enough talent for Rivals to tag him the No. 10 overall player in his class. He is the highest-ranked commitment Tom Crean has reeled in at Indiana, and it was the coach, Perea said, that made his final decision easy.

“That’s why I committed, because I know he’s going to help me make my dreams come true and is going to help me get to the next level,” Perea told Inside the Hall by phone shortly after leaving Bloomington Sunday. “He was really happy.”

Perea hit town Friday night and took in the Night of the Living Red scrimmage seated next to Zeller and Etherington. The trio was joined a day later by Indianapolis point guard prospect Yogi Ferrell at the IU-Northwestern football game. The four recruits, all part of the Indiana Elite program, took in the game from the east side of Memorial Stadium, seated with members of the team and sandwiched between Tim Buckley and Crean.

The weekend itself has been hailed for awhile as one of the biggest in memory for Indiana basketball’s recruiting efforts, and Perea’s commitment certainly lends that opinion credibility.

Perea said he chatted with Ferrell about his commitment before ultimately deciding to pull the trigger. Now, Perea said, his conversations with his friend will take on a different tone.

“He knows that I would love to play with him,” Perea said of Ferrell, adding that his commitment would give the Park Tudor point guard “one more reason to come to IU.”

More generally, Perea talked about the entire cluster of talented Indiana Elite prospects considering IU, including the ones he joined in Bloomington this weekend. Echoing the sentiments, surely, of IU basketball fans everywhere, he talked excitedly of the possibilities in front of them should they come to Bloomington together after high school.

“We’ve been playing together in AAU. We know everything about each other,” Perea said. “I would love to play with them (in college).”

Yeah not only is Zeller going to get 500+, the whole internet might crash from the heavy traffic and excitement.

I’m definitely not arguing with you. Branch was the first great coach and RMK was the second. I’m just saying that’s the only thing that annoys me about Vitale. He is always harping on the “honor the general” thing when IU has tried recently and been scoffed at by Knight. At least now DV will have more positives to talk about and can focus on IU’s comeback rather than the past because he’s always seemed to be an IU fan.

I got this feeling Tyler Z. will transfer to INDIANA U b4 the end of the season.

  • IU Jeff

Who is the greatest 5 star recruit in IU history??

  • Anonymous

“Don’t mind playing defense”? My impression is there are three kids who RELISH playing defense.

  • Jm23

I have said all along that HP is a must get for IU. We haven’t had a player like him since I have been alive (23 yrs).He is the type of player you normally see at UNC, MSU, KU, UK, or even GT (they always seem to produce bigs that are freak athletes) with his great athleticism and NBA body. I kinda see him as a Blake Griffin type of player prolly doesn’t have as good of handle or jumper but the size and athleticism are similar. Second note I know much of the attention has been on Zeller recruitment process and rightfully so but let’s not forget that AE, Jurkin, and Patterson all got the ball rolling on this whole thing
    P.S.
Big ten network wants seven bucks for two games online what a joke

like…your honor? (not that i’ve had to say that in front of a judge or anything).

  • Anonymous

    Doesn’t everybody?

  • millzy32

You stopped one short. Illinois not only has Assembly Hall like we do they also have Memorial Stadium just like we do.

  • Bleeding Crimson

Great get. I was wanting Hanner more than Zeller. What a catch. I wonder what was the thing most that made him decided IU??? Coach Crean, Coach McClain, IU, the Baylor situation, the other recruits, etc. Not that it matters probably all the above but one thing for sure is we knew all along CTC was our man and can recruit. So much for the nasayers…

I don’t think I agree with Artist on this. If HP committing was enough to bring your fingers back to the keyboard then my money is on that when CZ and / or Yogi committs it will bring you back to the keystrokes and that will be in less than 11 days. ( Power of positive thinking at work)

Good analysis and a correct one on all points IMHO

“Better to refine your skills in college than ride the pine in the NBA”

Sorta depends on the situation thought, right? Isiah Thomas left after his sophmore year so he could support his mother financially.. and nobody should stand in the way of a kid who recognizes a talent s/he has can provide a paycheck that alleviates financial burden for other family members. And what if the athlete suffers a career ending injury during that next season? I’m not saying HP should go to the NBA unprepared..just saying that he’ll make that decision as to what’s “better” for him when the time comes.

I think that is a risk that Alex is willing to take. But it will be fun seeing if we can make that happen.

  • Anonymous

Make that at least 4 people saying that.

Cody Zeller, if he becomes a Hoosier, will most likely play the small forward position. I see Perea as the power forward. Jurkin at center. Harris could be the final piece of a championship puzzle.

    2012 lineup:

PG: Yogi Ferrell and Jordan Hulls
SG: Mo Creek, Gary Harris, Ron Patterson, and Will Sheehy
SF: Christian Watford, Cody Zeller, Victor Oladipo, and Austin Etherington
PF: Hanner Perea, Derrick Elston, Bobby Capobianco
    C: Peter Jurkin

This would require a transfer or someone goes pro after this or next year. This is a national title contender with amazing depth, defense, height, athleticism, versatility, strength, and scoring. And it could happen. This would leave 6 slots for 2013 and 2014. Crean could press full court like coach Wooden did and destroy other squads with depth and defense. Coach Crean would never have to leave the state again to recruit. This type of talent reminds me of the UCLA dynasties. If IU pulls in 2 of these three (Harris, Yogi, and Cody), happy days are here again. Gentlemen, we are back!!

Maybe “story problems” are the way to go now with your students. Like this one:

What is the probability IU Men’s Basketball wins a national championship within 4 years?

Or maybe you need to teach them about statistics…as in rebounding, blocked shots, free throws, etc. Seems to me like now is a GREAT time to be a math teacher at that level…math may bore them, but when it’s applied to basketball, who doesn’t like learning more about it?

AE and Crean’s style of bball go together like an alley-oop and HP.

Wow I was able to work in a compliment on 3 people in one short sentence. AE’s abilities may be rubbing off on me.

Seriously though you are preaching to the choir when it comes to this fan and what I think of AE.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

Let’s not try to make it happen.

    Better call 911!

I would be shocked if Yogi does not commit. He would start from day one at PG on a title contender. Where else could he do that?

  • MillaRed

    CZ at the 3 hmmmmmmmm.

One of the main questions for Watford at the 3 is defense. You think CZ can
handle a 6’5″ wing in transition? If so that would be wonderful. But heck, I
think the kid is still growing!

  • jgongora86

Question for anyone. A lot of our kids our coming from Indiana Elite, and has this ever happened before to a college team? I would think that when they come over to play ball at IU, they will be running on all circles.

  • Anonymous

You may be right but I sure didn’t get that vibe from him then and he was nice enough to talk with us for over half an hour. At one point we thanked him for his time and told him we didn’t want to take up any more of his time and his response was to ask us if we from Indiana and when we told him we were he reply was ” you guys are from Indiana and don’t have time to talk about bball, me, I’ve always got time to talk bball ” and porceeded to introduce us to a couple of his players and assistant coaches that were also there.

All in all though it doesn’t matter if he was or wasn’t cause we have him now and that’s what matters the most.

The only thing I know is that if the dual sport athlete plays football in any way, the scholarship has to come from football’s number, to prevent football teams from stockpiling players.

I know this has happened both at IU (Antwaan Randle El, briefly) and other schools (Julius Peppers at UNC), and I don’t think basketball was docked a scholarship in either case. But the kid involved probably has to make football their priority, which I doubt Gary Harris is interested in.

What class is his brother in?

One day a beautiful new arena will be named after RMK. He may be passed on by then but it will happen. Unfortunately I just do not believe coach Knight will ever forgive IU for perceived wrongs in this life. “Knight Fieldhouse” and McCracken Court.

Lots of college programs work closely with certain AAU teams to as kind of a “farm program” if you will. Here’s an ESPN article about it from yesterday…………

The NBA may revise the one year rule to two years post high school which I would like to see. I believe the NFL has a similar rule currently in place.

  • Windycityshowdown

Oh, well the one thing about my team sucking this year is that next year they’ll have a high draft pick… that doesn’t translate into college basketball though so… GO HOOSIERS!!!

  • T-Rex

Yeah, check out BaseballBuc’s earlier post of the ESPN article. It’s a good article and talks about other feeder teams like IE.

Thank you Alex. What do you think of our chances with Hartman (the kid from Cathedral) in that 2013 class?

  • MillaRed

One thing I have learned over the years is the “live blogs” bring out the trouble-makers looking for “live” reactions. Many of them aren’t even IU fans. Just looking for some level of attention even if it’s negative. Personally I don’t join them much due to this irritating fact.

Otherwise I agree with Loop. There were criticisms of what we were doing on the floor, myself included. And I am sure they were 99% frustration. Hey, we’re fans. We have the privilege of doing that at times.

In the bigger picture, I don’t recall anyone calling for his job ITH. If you think about it, what did the recruiting picture look like 6 months ago? Kinda dreary? Could any of us have predicted what is happening right now? It’s amazing!

Chalk it up to post-Sampsongate syndrome and a little impatience from the fans. I don’t think CTC will get much heat from ITH for a while that’s for sure.

  • MillaRed

He is 16 years old. Goodness!

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

If Zeller and Yogi commit, I’ll be here commenting, no doubt :) . And don’t get me wrong, I love reading the recruiting stuff, just don’t comment on it often.

  • Anonymous

Alex, didn’t mean that we should ” try” to make it happen just thought if Yogi and CZ both commit at basically the same time everybody would be having so much fun that that possibility existed

  • Timitch

Thanks for the link A great article

  • http://www.facebook.com/srhise Sean Hise

Not a good enough all around player yet. Needs a jumper or he wont average the 20+ he’ll need to even think about NBA after one year.

  • http://www.facebook.com/srhise Sean Hise

Tom Crean haters you are so dumb, you are really dumb

If any IU team can equal 75 & 76 teams then they might be the best starting 5 ever. time will tell.

So is this a post record, Alex? I don’t think I’ve seen any article with half this many comments.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

We’ve had some with over 200, but I think this is the first with over 300.

His 5th grade brother might be the best of the Etherington brothers. Time will tell. Alex, who is a 2013 player is more athletic than Austin. Alex has freakish athleticism.
