In its resounding win over Marian University on Saturday afternoon, the Hoosiers got strong contributions from freshman newcomers Jalen Hood-Schifino, Malik Reneau and CJ Gunn.

Hood-Schifino scored 11 points (5-of-8) while dishing out four assists. Reanu posted a double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds). Gunn had six points, two rebounds and two assists.

We’ll take a look at how these freshmen got assists and buckets inside Indiana’s offense in the inaugural edition of Film Session for the 2022-2023 season:

With the Hoosiers cruising midway through the first half, former Montverde teammates Reneau and Hood-Schifino hooked up in some pick-and-roll action.

After receiving the ball from Trey Galloway via a dribble hand-off, Hood-Schifino gets a ball screen from Reneau. With Marian’s big playing drop coverage on Hood-Schifino, it allows a sliver of space for him to find Reneau on the roll. Hood-Shifino does a nice job of leading Reaneu with the pass here, allowing him to score ahead of the defense with ease.

Here are the three freshmen busting Marian’s zone. As Xavier Johnson swings the ball to Hood-Schifino on the left wing, Reneau heads to the middle of the zone and receives the pass from Hood-Schifino. As that’s happening, Gunn moves to the weak-side wing. Reneau smartly looks weak side for Gunn and whips him the pass. It’s not right in his pocket, but Gunn still moves over, catches it and rises and fires to hit the 3-pointer.

On this possession, Reneau and Race Thompson set a double drag screen for Hood-Schifino. Reneau rolls, while Thompson pops. With Thompson’s man in drop coverage on Hood-Schifino, Thompson is open and Hood-Schifino makes the pass. Thompson shoots with confidence and knocks down the 3-pointer. This was one of three 3-pointers from Thompson on the afternoon, a welcomed improvement over last season for the Minnesota native.
