Film Session: Northwestern
Up three with 2:32 to go, Chris Collins calls for Ryan Young to set a screen for Spencer up top. The rest of Northwestern’s offense is spread around the perimeter:
Young sets the screen and Spencer dribbles right. Brunk is moving on the hedge:
Brunk runs Spencer into a stunting Smith:
Spencer turns around and re-sets up top. Brunk is now fully switched onto Spencer as Phinisee fronts Young in the post. Spencer has the quickness advantage on Brunk and begins to cross him over with just three seconds left on the shot clock:
Smith stunts once again on Spencer’s drive and knocks the ball loose:
Phinisee recovers the loose ball. Smith sees IU has it and starts heading up the court in transition:
Phinisee passes it to Al Durham as he leans near the out of bounds line. Smith continues up the court:
Durham passes it up to Smith ahead of the defense:
Smith scores and is fouled. He hit the ensuing free throw to complete the 3-point play and tie the game:
This was a key sequence in the game, one started by a more active team defense — one we saw often against Florida State.
