Chandler interested in IU, taking wait-and-see approach

by in Recruiting | December 8th, 2010

Lawrence North senior Michael Chandler, one of the top remaining players still available in the 2011 class, said Wednesday night that he’s interested in Indiana.

“I think Indiana’s a great school. They’ve been there for me ever since I started playing, so they mean a lot,” Chandler told Inside the Hall. “I haven’t talked to them (directly). They’ve called my uncle and Coach (Jack) Keefer.”

The 6-foot-10, 245-pound center, who previously committed to both Louisville and Xavier, is in no rush to reach another decision.

In addition to IU, Chandler said his uncle and Keefer have been contacted by UConn, Oregon, St. John’s and Syracuse.

“I’ve just been really focused on the season,” he said. “I’m playing pretty good. I love playing with my teammates and making each other better as players on and off the court. I’m having fun this season with my team.”

Lawrence North will be in Lexington on Saturday for a game and Chandler will watch the IU-Kentucky game at Rupp Arena.

“We have a high school game in Lexington and while we’re down there, we’re just gonna watch the game,” Chandler said. “I’ve never seen that game up close and in-person before. It’s just something we’re just going to watch.”

Indiana’s recent recruiting momentum, including nine commitments since the beginning of August, is something Chandler is well aware of.

“I think (Crean has) gotten commitments from a lot of younger players and they could possibly change the program,” he said. “I think I could see myself fitting in at IU.”

Michael Chandler opens up his recruitment

by in Recruiting | April 17th, 2010

2011 Lawrence North big man Michael Chandler is back on the board.

Chandler, the No. 13 player in his class according to Scout.com, committed to Louisville in January of 2009 but has decided to re-open the process. Evan Daniels broke the story and offered up this insight from Chandler:

“I mean I feel as though I’m still committed to Louisville. But I’m open for other schools to recruit me. Sort of like the Austin Rivers situation.”

It’ll be interesting to see if Indiana can get into the discussion for Chandler. At 6-11, 210, he would obviously go a long way in helping the Hoosiers improve their frontcourt situation.

Lawrence North sophomores commit to Louisville

by in Recruiting | January 4th, 2009

Two of the top sophomores in the class of 2011 — Lawrence North’s Ryan Taylor and Michael Chandler — committed to Louisville shortly after the Cardinals’ 74-71 win over Kentucky today.

The Courier-Journal’s Jody Demling has the details:

Indianapolis Lawrence North sophomore Ryan Taylor  and Michael Chandler gave Pitino the good news just minutes after the win over UK in Freedom Hall.

“We told Richard Pitino and he said there couldn’t be a better day than this,” Taylor told The Courier-Journal. “And then when we told coach Pitino, he told us he didn’t like champagne but that he was going to get a bottle tonight.”

Taylor is a 6-foot-6 forward who picked the Cardinals over Cincinnati, Illinois, Purdue, Indiana and Kentucky. The 6-11 Chandler picked U of L over Ohio State, Kentucky, Indiana and Florida.

U of L already has two players form the perennial powerhouse Lawrence North program, which produced NBA players Greg Oden and Mike Conley among other past All-State picks. Stephan Van Treese signed with U of L in November and will be a freshman next fall, while junior Justin Martin has already committed to the Cardinals.

Maybe I’m missing someone, but I believe Todd Leary is the only notable player in recent history from Lawrence North to end up in Bloomington. The mass exodus from Jack Keefer’s program, one of the things Tom Crean hoped to end, seems to be as vibrant as ever.
