Miller set to meet with Indiana’s class of 2017 signees

  • 04/05/2017 11:50 am in

With the NCAA dead period for recruiting ending Thursday at noon, new coach Archie Miller won’t be wasting any time getting on the road meeting with the program’s three class of 2017 signees.

Miller is expected to meet with Stevenson (Ill.) wing Justin Smith, Berkmar (Ga.) guard Al Durham Jr. and Hatboro-Horsham (Pa.) forward Clifton Moore before Monday, when another four-day dead period for recruiting begins.

A source close to Smith told Inside the Hall on Wednesday that Miller will meet with the four-star prospect and his family on Thursday.

Al Durham Sr. told Inside the Hall that Miller will be in to meet with Durham Jr. and his family “later in the week.”

And a source close to Moore told Inside the Hall that Miller is expected to meet with the Pennsylvania forward and his family on Sunday.

Durham and Moore both previously asked out of their National Letters of Intent with Indiana following the firing of Tom Crean last month.

Smith and Durham are expected to play in next Saturday’s Derby Festival Classic at Freedom Hall in Louisville while Moore will play in the Jordan Brand Classic Regional Game next Friday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

In the latest 247Composite rankings for the 2017 class, Smith is rated the No. 72 player nationally, Moore is No. 141 and Durham is No. 232.

Hopefully these guys come to the meeting with an open mind and are prepared to hear Coach Miller out. If they do, I think they’ll be just as impressed as all of us are so far. However, if the recruits don’t see themselves fitting into his system, it’s completely understandable and best for both parties to go separate ways.

At the end of the day it is the players decision of what direction they will go but i have a feeling IU will keep 2 of the 3 and who wouldn’t want to play for this guy unless you aren’t into Defense!! GO HOOSIERS!!

  • Outoftheloop

I have no “insider” information. But I really want Smith and Moore in candy-stripes! They will add substantially to Archie’s first IU Team! Durham is a nice player, but if he can find a better college choice, he should follow his gut.

The one real issue I had with Coach Crean was the usage of scholarships. It’ll be interesting to see whether or how Miller pursues any other players, such as Tremont Waters, Jordan Tucker, and/or any grad transfers. I always love our players and feel they should be able to play on our roster if they qualify, but some may not necessarily take the scholarship spots.

  • inLinE6

Are you checking the rankings? Durham seemed to play better than his ranking. But if Waters is still interested and we can only sign one guard, then I’ll prioritize Waters.

I believe Archie is from Pennsylvania, which may be of value when recruiting Moore. Archie has handled this very well and expressed how important they are to the future. With all of these player parts in motion, it will be interesting. I feel myself being confident in this outcome.

and/or Mark Smith that point from Illinois.

Save for a few players who will test the NBA market (who likely would have regardless of who our head coach is), the current players have bought into the idea of wanting to play for IU (rather than just the head coach) by deciding to return next year — some even decided to before a new coach was announced. I appreciate that Smith followed a similar logic of waiting until a new coach was announced, hearing out that coach, and then deciding on his future, while it bothers me that Moore and Durham did the opposite by immediately asking out of their LOI’s.

But, Crean has taken the Temple job, I hear

  • pcantidote

Amongst our current roster (including TB, OG and JBJ), current recruits (including Durham and Moore), and prospects such as Waters, Mark Smith, Jordan Tucker, I am starting to feel confident that we will pull together a pretty strong roster next year.

  • pcantidote

I think you are reading fake news.

  • Sally Isom

google tom crean new head coach of temple

  • TomJameson

Don’t let the fact that they asked for a release bother you, Tom. That’s a fairly standard practice, and I wouldn’t have been surprised if all three had done it.

IU hasn’t granted those releases yet but, if any of those three want to reopen their recruitment after meeting with Archie, pretty sure the releases will be forthcoming.

  • HoosierKid

Smith and Durham will stay with IU. Moore will transfer not enough playing time with Hartman returning

Didn’t know exactly where to share this, but I just read a great article by Rick Bozich (Alex’s dad?) of WDRB that basically talked about Archie Miller and his awesome work ethic. He said a lot of times people temper expectations if you get off to a slow start and want to give you a cushion of time to build up your program. AM’s quote as far as that was concerned was “I don’t operate like that. I want to win now”! I CAN’T WAIT FOR NOVEMBER!!!!

  • pcantidote

Yep, did that, and that is how I concluded that it was a fake news report. No mainstream coverage of this, and I’d never click on the couple of odd sites reporting it, especially if I thought someone was coming here trying to promote those sites.

  • MGDC

Fran Dunphy, the Temple coach, is very well respected and liked there. Who would put this crap up?

  • Sally Isom

    sorry learning

  • INUnivHoosier2

You’re mistaken. Crean named new coach of the Beth Shalom Temple Fighting Sadducees.

  • iugradmark

We will find out soon enough but I have to believe that Archie already knows who is staying and who is leaving. It would be difficult to go and meet with parents and try and convince them to stay with Indiana if you can’t guarantee a spot. It would be great if they could start making formal announcements about kids that have made up their mind to stay. I think we have only heard public comments from 3 players / family members.

  • Piker

17 years olds do that. Coaches are real important and it’s like someone dissin your uncle.

  • John D Murphy

I’m 99.9999% that Rick is Alex’s dad. I grew in southern Indiana and Rick is a 4 decade + legend of Louisville sports journalism. He was with the Courier-Journal when it was a far more important paper nationally than the city of Louisville (for it’s size) should have.

  • John D Murphy

I thought that was an April’s fool’s joke?

  • Piker

Archie needs to convince them to stick it out until end of May if he is not sure. I have a feeling that the whole team would like to stay unless JBJ, OG or TB go pro. Just a feeling and more so since RJ decided to stay.

  • John D Murphy

Seems like we’ll have plenty of guys on the roster but…it probably wouldn’t hurt to ring up ESPN #41 Jeremiah Tilmon (6-10 center) who just asked for his release from Illinois. If TB leaves and there is space, he might be a good backup for DD.

  • unclekerfuffle

Yeah, Rick is Alex’s dad. I remember Rick writing for the IDS when I was in school in B’town back in the day.

And, yes, that was a great article about CM’s attitude towards expectations and winning now.

  • IUBizmark

Would love to have Tilmon. I heard he’s going to Missouri now.

  • pcantidote

Did Mizzou open up a spot for his dad to coach too?

  • MarkHoltzHoosier

Did RJ announce? I missed this!

  • Allhandsondeck

Yup, Sat in a few I.U. J School classes with Rick, and worked at the IDS with him. Father and son. Proud Hoosier products. Go Big Red!

  • Rick Pearson

Really hoping for some good news that Big Man Moore is still on Board fingers crossed I believe Smith, & Durham both are still committed let’s go Hoosier’s!!!

  • Rick Pearson

Anybody else have any intake on the big man opting out of commitment at Illinois ?
