Indiana to open Legends Classic against Georgia

Indiana will meet Georgia in the semifinals of the 2012 Legends Classic at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn at 5:30 p.m. ET on Monday, November 19, according to ESPN.com.

The Hoosiers, picked by some as the preseason No. 1 team nationally, will open the two day event against the Bulldogs on ESPNU.

Georgia finished last season 15-17 overall and 5-11 in the SEC.

Georgetown and UCLA will follow on ESPN2.

The winners will meet on Tuesday, November 20 at approximately 10 p.m. ET on ESPN. The consolation game will tip at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU.

Indiana is also expected to play a series of games at Assembly Hall as a part of the Legends Classic.

According to CBSSports.com, potential opponents include Duquesne, North Dakota State, James Madison, Liberty, UC Irvine and Sam Houston.

shoot, i was really hoping that we would have a chance to play Georgetown and UCLA both, to add to our non-conference schedule. But either way, i am still glad that we can compete in a tournament like this and have a chance to move on and play against one of two excellent basketball schools!

  • Chris

Little disappointed. I bought tickets to this, then the first game was moved up to 5:30, then we get picked for it and against the weakest opponent. Meh. Still fired up to see the Hoosiers in NYC!

So will our first regular season game be a preliminary part of the Legends Classic? I guess what I’m asking is, about when will the first home game of the season be? I only have to wait 2 weeks to watch football, but almost 2 months for ANY basketball!

I really like Mark Fox as a coach so I think it will be fun to see Crean coach against him. However, that’s about as much as I can find to look forward to about UGA other than the fact that they’ll be playing against an IU team I’m incredibly anxious to watch. Was hoping for a chance to play Gtown/UCLA like another poster expressed.

    Damn it.

  • 11th and Done (Dunn)

They couldn’t get anyone better than Georgia for a “Legend”?

Got my tickets the day they went on sale. Can’t wait to see our Hoosiers rock the Barclay’s Center.

The winners and losers play on the second day of the event. So Indiana will play either UCLA or Georgetown.

Last year the first game was November 11, so I’d expect it to be around that time again.

  • Evansville Hoosier

Do you think we’ll have another exhibition game like we had against Uindy?

Yeah. I’m going to have to leave work early. Oh well, win win!

  • Evansville Hoosier

Wait… Hoosier Hysteria wasn’t at midnight last year?? That’s disheartening. Someone please tell me it’ll be at midnight again this year?

Hasn’t been at midnight for quite a long time.

  • VerdellJonesIV

Hey man, Coach Cal said that’s a really tough conference…(sarcasm)

  • Wright Harney

Nice. Was thinking it wouldn’t really make sense to just go up there for one game. Hopefully we get to play UCLA and make up for that awful tournament game we lost to them my sophomore year.

HUGE for our non-conference schedule to go along with the Tar Heels.. I don’t see Georgia being a key win in the end, but blowing them out of the water and getting past UCLA/Georgetown will be a big part on our resume in March. Go Hoosiers!

Is the B1G/PAC 12 agreement off for all sports or just football?

I feel like that agreement is part of the reason IU hasn’t scheduled another marquee home and home.

My only gripe is that they put IU v. UGA on ESPNU. I get the channel on Direct TV but I know many of my family and friends back in Hoosier land don’t get ESPNU from their local cable providers. You’ve got one of the most rabid fan bases with a team expected to be top 3 in the nation and you don’t take advantage of the ratings boost….who is running ESPN programming??

  • Peterson714

Will be at both games.. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is a serious player for UGA. Will be a lottery pick next year, should be a good barometer to see where Victor is at.

UCLA/Georgetown game will be good, so IU will have their hands full with the winner – quality opponents for that RPI no matter how you look at it.
Didn’t see any hotel recommendations on the Legends Classic website. Anyone have a suggestion? I’m sure I could look, but thinking there’s a travel agency out there that caters to IU fans traveling. Thanks.

  • SCHoosier

Georgia is a bit of a mystery. New coach made a difference his first couple of seasons..had some decent SEC wins. Took a little back step last year I believe..but you can bet they will have athletes.

  • marcusgresham

That rabid fanbase is probably why they put that game on ESPNU. Those rabid fans who don’t have that channel just might drop some money to add it.

  • marcusgresham

It was at about 7pm or so Saturday evening. Really far more convenient for anyone going who isn’t in Bloomington, as we aren’t all arriving home at 4 or 5am.

  • The_Real_Assembly_Hall

There are usually two of those on the slate. Probably will see the same again this year.

proud IU alum, live in Brooklyn, work for the Nets/Barclays, #1 preseason?, no complaints

  • stroot

If I remember correctly, 2004 (my sophomore year) was the final year it was held at midnight. Checking it out at 7pm for my junior year just wasn’t the same…

  • stroot

To borrow a line from one of Georgia’s fans from another site —

“I like the implication that there is anything legendary or classic about our basketball program”

  • FreeAgentID

    Go Hoosiers!
