Jones has torn ACL, out for season

According to IU Media Relations, Tom Crean has announced Verdell Jones suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during Thursday’s win agains Penn State.

Via the release, here’s Crean:

“This is heartbreaking news. His contribution to our program over the course of his career, and especially this season, is immeasurable. He was playing his best basketball and really had embraced his role on this team as a player and as a leader. We are proud of the career he has had at Indiana University and he, as much as anyone, deserved the opportunity to enjoy everything we have worked so hard for and are experiencing as a team. We appreciate all the prayers that have been said on his behalf.”

Such news would seem to indicate Jones will be unable to play the rest of the way for Indiana.

This is simply the epitome of injustice, unfairness, suckyness, bad luck, bad juju and and the epitome of at least a thousand other bad things.

The old saying is that everything happens for a reason, well I’m looking, I’m looking really hard, and I just can’t seem to see any legitimate reason for this one. I know it will make him a stronger person down the road and all that but I think for one, that this young man was already a pretty strong person, and it just seems like there are a whole lot of other things that he could have learned that same lesson from if was needed.

A lot of times when a person has something that everyone feels like is totally unfair happen to them for no understandable reason that person and the people close to them sometimes vent their anger on someone or something else close by. Sorry UW but you guys look like the nearest and most likely thing. We can scratch 2 or 3 things off of the list in one swoop here by knocking off UW. Remember VJ saying after the game up there that he felt really bad that a team he was on never was able to get a W against them. We can take care of that for him, help our seeding and be one step closer to winning this darn thing for VJ and the Hoosier nation.

Why do you feel the need to lash out and call people ignorant for speaking out against someone?  There is no reason for it right now, just as there would be place for someone to ridicule VJlll in light of the injury.  Be better than that!

First we lose Peyton for good, and now Verdell is done in an IU uni.  Not the best week for sports in the Crossroads of America.

I respect your thoughts to afford VJ3 the opportunity to play in the tournament, but i’d rather see our team thump the crap out of each opponent from the opening tip and put VJ3 in for the final minute when we’re up by 20…so he can score in the tournament. Even if our defense is playing 3 to their 5, we can have VJ at the other end under the basket (sitting in a wheelchair if necessary), have DE catch the full-court pass, hand it to VJ and then let the other team know IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS that we expect VJ to get an open look to get in the books each game. “This is not up for discussion..” says Derek, “it’s just the way it’s gonna be.”  I expect that to happen all the way to the title game against Kentucky.

THANK YOU VERDELL!!!! for everything you did for this program. What we have to realize is that he had the talent to play about anywhere but he stayed with crean and the hoosier program and did what every man should do and that was stick it out and push through it. So Verdell Thank You!!! I commend you for what you’ve done. NOW GO GET EM HOOSIERS. PLAY FOR VERDELL.

  • IUeconAlum

This sucks. Go out and give it to Wisky.

  • HoosierPat

I just feel awful for Verdell. He put in so much work and went through Hell to get to this point, only to have it taken away. It’s cruel but it’s life. Thank you Verdell for always representing Indiana the right way. It’s sad, but we can’t stay down. It’s the next man up. Let’s take it to Wisconsin.

  • Hoosiered

    Thank you, Verdell.

  • inadvertentelbows_stillhurt

Let’s dull the pain with some big shots of Wisky…win it for VJ3

Even his harshest critics would agree no one would ever want to see anything like this happen to such a likeable young man.  It really is horrible timing as he was to be playing in his first ever NCAA tournament game(s).  Best of luck to Verdell going forward and lets just win the rest of our games for Verdell.

Even when I would watch some things and get frustrated you could always tell that he was giving great effort and that he was actually starting to settle into his new role and be a solid contributor.

WIN IT FOR VERDELL?  WIN WHAT?  BIG TEN TOURNEY FOR STARTERS AND THEN?  WHO KNOWS?  LETS MAKE A 2002 LIKE RUN AND FINISH IT THIS TIME.

  • millzy32

Should be an exclamation point after Verdell not a question mark, my bad.

I’m so glad staff chose that photo for this story. Verdell with the shoulder brace. Now a torn ACL. There can be no doubt he gave his all for his Indiana Hoosiers. As you said , yes Verdell, you will forever be a Hoosier and will always be dear to our hearts.

Sad news for VJ3, I think the rest of the team will use this situation to dominate & win it all for VJ3!!!

For those of us with a little age, we know that the final, ultimate value of the NCAA tournament to Verdell Jones’ life will be the memories from it that he carries with him. As cruel as this injury is to a player who is practically the symbol of this program’s triumph over its struggles, the tournament can still be a wonderful experience for him when he looks back on it.

While it’s darn near the most awful darn thing to happen to a player that I can remember, my biggest hope is that the team, the coaches, the larger university and town community, and, above all, Verdell himself finds a way to make the 2012 ncaa tournament an experience he looks back on with joy and gratitude.

And he’s got a darn good start. Watford’s shot is obviously the moment that defines this season and the Hoosiers’ resurgence; it was Jones that made that play happen. Perhaps more importantly, the “resurgence of Indiana’s resurgence,” its play over the last four weeks, does not happen without Verdell’s leadership, in my opinion. The team, and maybe now the program, has established an identity, which is maybe the single most important precursor to real success. Jones, as much as any player, created that identity with his leadership and he can continue to provide it over the next weeks.

I sure wish he could do so on the court. And, like others, I hope he gets a minute on the court at some point during the tournament (which would be more likely if the team can make it to the second weekend). But, to the extent he cannot play, I sure hope he understands our appreciation of what he has done for the program and also finds a way to maintain and even magnify his incredible value to his team in the weeks ahead.

There were dark times in the last few years but Verdell Jones became a “true Hoosier.”

I thought about this as well and tweeted it to Alex.  But I don’t think we’re looking for a Willis Reed moment.  More like Nykesha Sales, former UCONN women’s star, who came on to score a bucket to become the all-time leading scorer.  In VJ’s case, though, I think it would be cool if the training staff could wrap/numb/ice it as you say, and if we’re up double digits in the first round (knock on wood), Crean calls a timeout with 30 seconds left so he can at least step on the floor and bask in the moment.

  • HoosierExile

This guy had the game-winning assists in both the OSU and UK games, game winning/sealing jumpers vs. NW and Mich.  It’s a shame he won’t be there in the clutch anymore.

  • Old Sports Dude

Coming from a person who never really appreciated VJIII until the past month or so I am heartbroken for him. I wish we could dress him and if we get ahead in an NCAA game put him in for 1 play so he could say he played in NCAA. He has after everything brought leadership to this team and provided a spark when we needed it like the NW game a few weeks ago.

Whatever he does in his adult life I wish him well and know he will succeed. He has shown great character and leadership through his time at IU. These attributes will serve him well in the world.

Not much to say but sorry Verdell for my criticisms in the past, good luck on your futurre and thanks for the memories. Hope the team goes out and wins for the VJIII, he deserves it.

    Heartbreaking.

I thought it looks like his sneaker slipped, then grabbed on the dreaded floor sticker (B1GTEN) just inside the free throw line. Perhaps not, such a shame…..

  • robhoosier

I think in someway, somehow, we need to get Verdell on the court during the tourney

  • Nszczepanski

I think IU should start their first round game with VJ on the floor and sacrifice 2 points.  VJ sacrificed his first 3 years to get to this point he deserves to be on the floor to be able to say he played in an NCAA tournament game.  Coach Crean if you are reading these posts please put VJ in!!!!
