Elston sidelined after surgery to repair nose fracture

  • 12/21/2011 4:36 pm in

When Indiana takes the court on Thursday night for its final game before Big Ten play, the Hoosiers will be without Derek Elston.

Indiana coach Tom Crean announced today that Elston had minor surgery on Tuesday to repair a fracture in his nose.

The injury was sustained via an inadvertant elbow in practice from sophomore Victor Oladipo.

“Derek Elston’s gonna miss tomorrow, because he had surgery on a fracture in his nose yesterday,” Crean told reporters on Wednesday afternoon. “He sustained it last week and was able to play on it. We decided to get it done yesterday, so he’ll miss tomorrow night, which will give us enough time to get better [before Michigan State].

“We certainly don’t anticipate anything more than just a couple of games with him.”

The junior forward from Tipton, Ind. is averaging 5.9 points and 2.6 rebounds in 13.6 minutes per game.

This isn’t the end of the world.  As all of us, we hate seeing anyone miss playing time due to getting hurt.  Derek has made some really good strides this year and will come back and help in battles that lie ahead in the Big Ten.

Sorry to hear that…But hey, things could be much worse.  Hope Vic didn’t get ya to good buddy.  Hope surgery went well and here’s to a speedy recovery and seeing you back on the court very soon!

Elston just can’t catch a break…..or can he. But all laughing to the side, hope he bounces back and is ready to go in the B10 because we need all the size we have.

  • IUisBack

Get well quickly, Derek.  We need you for our B1G season to be successful.

It was Victor’s elbow, huh.  I would have guessed Tijan.

  • HoosierDadE

If this were PUke there would be a massive cover-up because Kelsey Barlow hit him with a basketball rack…

It’s fun to make fun of little brother!

If I were him I would play the rest of the season with a really scary goalie mask.

Sure hope Derek is back by the MSU game. We need all hands on deck for the B10 season.

Amazing to think what Derek’s numbers would be this year if he got starter minutes.

6 pts, 2.5 rebs in 13.5 mins per game?! By far his best season as a Hoosier.

Hope Elston gets better fast.  He has proven to be a tough kid and has bounced back before.  He is going to be a vitale part of bigten play and will be huge coming off the bench

    Here’s to a quick recovery.

Off topic, Just heard this on Inside Edition where pUKe fan Megan Dills was knocked down during the Storming of the court.  If she would have been sitting with Ashey Judd this might not have happen.  Regardless, not good publicity for IU?

According to the Kentucky fan blog VaughtsViews.com, Dills — a Kentucky fan — was injured at the end of the game when Indiana fans stormed the court.  She has been unable to walk because of a badly sprained ankle and will have to miss a photo shoot as a result.

“All those fans came out of their seats and rushed the floor like
idiots,” Dills explained. “The next thing I knew, I was knocked down
five or six steps. I think the guy who actually knocked me down is the
one who did at least pick me up. After I got hurt, I was scared to
    death.

“I just can’t do the shoot with my ankle like it is. But that’s okay because I do a lot of them.”

  • The_Real_Assembly_Hall

I read that too last week and it burned me up the way she tried to burn down IU. She also said it was not classy on our part and we are idiots. Nice moral criticism coming from someone who takes their clothes off to take pictures for money. Just sayin’…. I am sorry she got hurt though too. Nobody wants anyone to get hurt like that.

    Adopted step brother.

Get well soon DE! At least you will get a cool mask or face gear.

    What’s wrong with Sheehey???

  • InTheMtns

According to the Indiana Daily Student’s basketball columnist Avi Zaleon, Will sustained an injury in practice and isn’t likely to play against UMBC. According to IU Athletics, Will “has a left lower leg injury that he sustained in practice Wednesday and his status will be evaluated each day.” IDS adds, “According to the source, Sheehey thinks he ‘will be out for awhile.’”

    Stay tuned, I guess.

Lets just hope he doesnt have to wear the Haris Mujezenovic mask!

I would be interested in how you’ll back that statement up. Derek’s numbers are the best in his 3 years as a Hoosier. His shooting percentage is extremely high. In only 13 mins a game he’s averaging 6 points and 2.5 rebs. If he played 30 mins a game he would be averaging the same numbers that Cody Zeller is putting up. He’s not Cody, that’s for sure, but to say he’s been awful seems far fetched.

You don’t recover from a Tijan elbow.

I don’t think her ankle was scheduled to be an integral part of the photo shoot.

  • IUisBack

What a juvenile, and inaccurate, comment.

  • Bleeding Crimson

I read another a comment where there was a guy who rush to take pics of her ankle….I’m sure it wasn’t the ankle he was worried about taking pics of.
