Five story lines from the first July evaluation period

With the first of two live evaluation periods in the books, Inside the Hall takes a look at five Indiana basketball recruiting story lines from the opening ten days of July recruiting:

– Tom Crean earns frequent flier miles: Even with nine verbal commitments lined up for the Hoosiers’ next three recruiting classes and the current No. 1 class nationally in 2012, Crean blazed a trail across the country in the first ten-day period. Confirmed stops included the adidas Invitational in Indianapolis, the NY2LA Sports Next Level Invitational in Mequon (WI), the LeBron James Skills Academy in Akron, the Kentucky Hoopfest in Louisville, the Nike Peach Jam in North Augusta (SC), the adidas College Coaches Classic in Indianapolis, the NY2LA Sports Summer Jam in Mequon (WI), the Best Buy Summer Classic in Minneapolis and the Best of the Midwest in Indianapolis. Crean is often described as relentless on the recruiting trail and that was certainly the case as Indiana’s head coach worked from sun up until sun down scouting IU’s current commitments and top targets.

– Elite goes deep at adidas Invitational, Best Buy Classic: The Indiana Elite team that features Hanner Perea, Jeremy Hollowell and Yogi Ferrell was questioned by some for failing to win a tournament in the spring, but the trio of Indiana commits led Team Indiana into the semifinals of the loaded adidas event at North Central. After dropping their opening super pool contest to Shabazz Muhammad and Dream Vision, Elite bounced back to knock off the Andre Drummond-led Connecticut Basketball Club and the Atlanta Celtics. In tournament play, the hot hand of Hollowell (more on him in a bit) led Elite to three straight wins before falling 60-58 in the event’s semifinals on Saturday to New Heights. In Minneapolis at the Best Buy Classic, Elite advanced to the championship game and finished 5-1. For a group that’s playing together for the first time and possesses limited depth, Team Indiana’s play in the first evaluation period was impressive.

– Hollowell catches fire in Indianapolis: If there was any doubt that the Lawrence Central senior deserves to mentioned among the nation’s elite high school players, it was erased during the four-day period in Indianapolis. The 6-foot-7 Indiana-bound wing averaged over 22 points in the adidas Invitational and he did so in a variety of ways. Hollowell knocked down contested shots from beyond the 3-point line. He connected on pull-up mid-range jump shots. He backed down defenders and either finished or made his way to the foul line. And he did it against elite competition. Hollowell’s laid back personality has been viewed by some as a negative, but it’s time to start recognizing him for what he is: a competitive player that wants to win.

– Wisconsin big man emerges as big priority in 2013: Our first mention of Luke Fischer was on June 15, the first day college coaches could call prospects in the class of 2013. Indiana’s pursuit of the 6-foot-9, 210-pound junior from Germantown has accelerated quickly in the past month. Crean made a trip to the NY2LA Next Level Invitational in Wisconsin on the second day of the evaluation period to see Fischer, a trip to Louisville to watch him in the Kentucky Hoopfest and another trip to Wisconsin just days later to see him again. Fischer isn’t highly regarded by national scouts, but he’s a rapidly improving prospect with a knack for being in position to make a play. Indiana offered Fischer right before the evaluation period and while Wisconsin also tracked him closely, this appears to be a recruiting battle in which the Hoosiers currently have the upper hand.

– The first 2015 scholarship offer is extended: Jalen Coleman has yet to play in a high school game. But the Indiana staff already thinks highly enough of the 2015 Indianapolis Cathedral prospect to offer him a spot in Bloomington. Indiana’s early attention to Trey Lyles and James Blackmon Jr. last July paid dividends when the duo both gave verbal pledges last September. Coleman played up one year with the Eric Gordon 15-and-under team at the adidas Invitational and Best of the Midwest. In both events, the 6-foot-2, 155-pound guard excelled as a facilitator and a scorer off the dribble. While there’s a risk in offering a kid that’s yet to log a minute of high school basketball, there’s also a risk in letting another school like Michigan State or Purdue get a leg up on one of the state’s premier talents.

I understand the recruitment of Luke Fischer, but I don’t understand why we are not focused on Beejay Anya. I’ve been seeing a trend that when major programs a at an even keel in the  recruitment of a kid we tend to back off.

Good to see Hollowell getting some more cred.  I had watched one or two of his high school games last year and was moderately impressed.  Then I have watched about 6 of the elite games this year and he has shown much more improvement.  He has been assertive, confident and aggressive.  I know he doesn’t show it much but let his play do the talking.  He has wanted the ball at key points in the game, made a point to get it and is not afraid to take gutsy shots.  He has played very well against good competition as well.

Scouts should notice and I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t climb up the rankings in a noticeable way.  But then again rankings have surprised me before.

    jgongora86,
What do you mean “keel”.  In detail please…it’s not that I haven’t notice but maybe I haven’t noticed?

I am no recruiting guru, so bear with me if this painfully obvious.
Why is IU so intent on a PG in the 2013 class? Doesn’t bringing in Abell & Ferrel allow a year off for a point guard? I understand if it’s a superstar (like a K Irving) but I would think depth at the 4-5 would be much more necessary. What am I missing?

What is this stuff about Ron Patterson not playing any more AAU games to “work out individually” as reported by Kyle Neddenriep? Anybody know?

I would tend to agree with you.

Well, we are recruiting Fischer and Williams, two post players, so that’s good.

But what has me puzzled is the continued recruitment of wing players when we have Hartman, and also Davis who may end up being a wing too.

He’s not playing the rest of July.

I am not worried about who CTC is chasing or what position they project to play. I once had these questions, but after the last 12 months I just don’t go there anymore.

#1 class in 2012 after another abysmal season? That’s about as good as recruiting gets.

At this point, I’m patiently waiting for the next 4-5 star to commit. Patiently waiting to has stepped it up into a starting role this fall. And patiently waiting for Cody to start his journey.

Did anyone watch Tyler Zeller in last year’s tournament? And Cody is better than he was once graduated? This is going to be fun.

Man… Mark williams is not that good. If we’ve got a few guys who can go inside, zeller, perea, maybe jurkin, maybe even (if we’re lucky) mcgary, then I’d much rather go talent and upside than need. Basketball is one of the few sports you can do that in. I mean devin davis is not a wing. And they’re saying chances are he won’t be. But he’s hard nosed and that’ll do.

So why don’t we get a guy who could end up being the best in state player in the class? Am I the only one who has watched zak irvin play? This dude is 6’6″, 6’7″ maybe, can jump out of the gym, can dribble, and has a silky j. Am I missing something? He should be a top priority.

Another thing to look forward to: I gotta say a commit from lyle or bluiett in 2014 would make for a (hate to say it) 2011 kentucky like class. Our 2014 class would be unstoppable, inside and out.

There’s only one 10-day evaluation period left. Not a huge deal, IMO.

Hey Bleeding, sorry for the late reply.  I just think that after the K. Irving fiasco and Moses Abraham fiasco, he seems to back off when major programs get involved late or when other programs in the same standing as IU.  Kaleb Tawenski ( I know it’s misspelled)  McGary or Shabaz.  I don’t care if he losses out on all of them, but you have to keep trying.  All athletes shouldn’t have to think that ” I love IU” from the beginning.

Like he backed off on Zeller when UNC was in the picture? Or Hollowell when OSU was the favorite? Or how he’s backed off Gary Harris since MSU and Louisville have gotten involved?

    C’mon.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

Indiana was never seriously recruiting Kaleb Tarczewski or Shabazz Muhammad.

In terms of McGary, Indiana has still been in regular contact, but Mitch is telling reporters otherwise for whatever reason.

  • jgongora86

Hollowell, Zeller, and Harris are from Indiana, and had interest from IU from the get go.  Crean also had a head start from the beginning  with all your examples (which I’m not complaining about).  I can give you McGary, but Kaleb Tawenski, Shabaz, christmass.  Point is, Crean shouldn’t be afraid to battle for recruits who have not lived in Indiana or don’t recognize the program as the mecca of basketball (though it is).  If they say no  I’m fine with it, but you have to see it through to the end.   IMHO of course.

Well, I just feel its time that he seriously does.  I know that they tried in the beginning but faded out.  Just a thought.  I want me some Anya.

The last thing Crean has had when it comes to recruiting is a “head start” or any kind of advantage. The fact that he’s beat out top-tier teams for top level recruits less than a year removed from a 10-win season is pretty remarkable.

    Would have to agree 100%

  • jgongora86

We can obviously discuss this issue till there is no end.  I think it’s an advantage that you live in a state where basketball is next to none.  Call me crazy, but if he wasn’t able to recruit these kids wear Indiana shirts and sweatshirts aren’t plentiful than Coach would have no business continuing to be our coach.

I agree and some of the other schools on recruits still being pursude are MAC or smaller schools [don't worry i don't include Butler in these]

  • bluegrassHoosier

CTC doesn’t keep enough in state talent in the state…..oh wait.
CTC doesn’t recruit enough out of state talent for us to be a national power….oh wait.

There are only so many scholarships to go around. By nature a local kid may scoop up the offer more quickly. It’s not like we have tons of open scholarships to just keep getting every top notch recruit that strikes our fancy.

If we have a top 5 recruiting class, I could care less if they are from Bloomington or Cambodia.

    I don’t doubt Crean’s ability to recruit.

  • Kelin Blab

I think alot of times a coach goes on feel and fit. Which kid to they have a better feel for right now and does he fit. I think Fischer could be ideal in both situations. Not that Anya won’t help but if you have a better relationship with a kid you want and it is a relationship that is moving in the right direction on both parties end you roll with it.

  • Kelin Blab

I think another thing Crean is up against with out of state recruiting is….every second you spend out of state, when you have TONS of talent in state it can hurt you some. Just a thought

Yogi is the ONLY pg after Hulls leaves. Remy is not a full time PG at all.

  • Kelin Blab

I think it is a great move personally. What is he playing for at this point? Scholarship offers, exposure….. I think Hanner should join him and work individually on his game and continue to improve. Can’t do that playing against the Greene County All Stars AAU team.
