Video: Zeller reacts to 79-71 win over Evansville Bosse

EVANSVILLE — Bosse coach Shane Burkhart spoke with no reservation in his praise for Cody Zeller following his team’s 79-71 loss to Washington on Friday night.

Despite scouting the 6-10 IU signee three different times, Burkhart and the Bulldogs had no answer for Zeller, who scored a game-high 27 points and pulled down 20 rebounds.

The Bosse coach called the effort “phenomenal.”

“How can you stop him?” Burkhart said. “You can’t. If you go to him and he’s 15-feet away, he can see over everybody. At the same time, we go and double team him and he turns around and gets an open look for somebody else.”

Zeller, who missed a stretch of nearly six minutes in the second half with four fouls, displayed the versatility that’s helped him blossom into one of the nation’s best players.

He drew contact and went to the line 17 times, hitting 13 attempts. He spun baseline for a two-handed dunk. He knocked down a few looks from the perimeter. And he even pitched in with ball handling duties late when Bosse turned up the full court pressure.

Here is a quote for you from Jaquan Lyle……

Bouta do my thing tonight against a probable future teammate….(Cody Zeller)

  • I’m so relieved we got this kid.

    So what were Lyle’s stats?

  • Finished with 16 points. I’ll have a post about him later today or tomorrow.

Didn’t start for the first time this season.

Is it wrong that I’m a little aroused right now? JUST A JOKE!!!

Lyle did hit three straight 3’s to bring Bosse back and make the game close late. He has a good looking shot on pull-up jumpers and around the rim, but it comes from too low on the perimeter. He’ll have a hard time getting it off against bigger opponents. Luckily, he has four years to work on that. (It’s insane to me that we are now scouting 14 year olds on blogs.)

I was very impressed with Cody’s poise. Bosse plays hard, and was very physical all night – plus there were a few questionable calls that went against him – but he showed very little frustration and was able to continue to get things done.

He really is a great rebounder, although I think the next tallest kid on the floor was JaQuan Lyle at 6’4″.

Wow. I am extremely impressed with Cody Zeller so far this year. I cannot wait to see him play in the Hall of Fame Classic in New Castle later this month and eventually in Assembly Hall. We have a bright future Hoosier Nation.

  • I’ll be at the HOF Classic as well. Should be a great day of hoops.

What are the chances we see CZ in the McDonalds game this year? Haven’t seen a Hoosier in that game since EJ.

Don’t lie, man. I’m also aroused.

I still think that we HAVE get someone to play the 5 spot so we can get the best outta Zeller while we can

What an asset to have for a team. Zeller is very professional and will be a great player for IU for four years.

Interesting to think about Cody playing on my old court. The more I see of this kid, the more thankful I am he is a Hoosier. Because if he would have bolted for UNC, after seeing him put up these numbers every week, I would have been one bitter Hoosier.

Can anyone tell me our options for viewing or getting an internet radio broadcast for Vegas? I am hearing it’s a weird CBS spin-off and doubting I will be able to see it televised.
