Around the Hall is recommended reading from the Inside the Hall crew. So go ahead, get your read on.

+ According to this tweet, Tom Crean will make an in-home visit today with 2011 Washington forward Cody Zeller.

+ Crean went on a Twitter run Monday and admitted giving up field-level access to the Ravens-Jets Monday night game in order to recruit. So who did Crean see on Monday? Hanner Perea. And also Collin Hartman and Trey Lyles.

+ Scout.com updated its 2012 rankings. Gary Harris (15), Hanner Perea (21), Jeremy Hollowell (29), Yogi Ferrell (36), D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera (37) and Ron Patterson (69).

+ According to a premium story on SpartanMag.com, Harris is down to Indiana, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Xavier.

+ eph521, one of the ITH comment overlords, sent us the following video interview with 2011 point guard Cezar Guerrero.

+ IUHoosiers.com posted a profile of junior center Guy-Marc Michel.

+ Illinois coach Bruce Weber showed up at Lawrence Central’s lunch room to visit Hollowell.

I think Perea should be rated a little better, but I like Hollowell’s ranking in this update.

  • GFDave

I can’t remember Patterson’s previous ranking. Did he fall as people predicted he would because of the commitment?

    Thanks for e

  • LiveIUBBall

Surprised Jurkin isn’t listed a little higher by Scout. 21st Center and only 3 stars.

  • HoosierFromCT

love it. How many more one-and-dones till UK has had enough of 30+ wins a season to later be vacated and zero national championships?

  • Anonymous

Glad that Crean gets the “big picture” and realizes that it is more important to get players and this program up and running before having fun, there will be plenty of time to go to NFL games after we get these recruits and start winning- that is the “real” fun!
GMM looks huge just from his profile pic, if he stays out of foul trouble I can see some finger wagging going on this year(ala Mutumbo).Definitely should help our defense to have a Guy like that guarding the lane.
Somebody should tell Bruce Weber that he isn’t allowed to cross our state line unless he is bringing his team to lose @ the REAL Assembly Hall.I think it is going to take more than a lunch meeting for him to land Hollowell(hopefully it is between us and Ohio St.).

I love how everybody refused to comment, “couldn’t be reached” for comment,” or offered a weird comment and then hung up.

It’s amazing how he earned a 90 each semester, which just happened to be the perfect grade he needed, despite the fact that it’s Algebra 3 and the kid never had an A in his life before that class. There hasn’t been a red flag that big since Stalin marched into Berlin.

  • garyindiana_311

i’ve never heard that red flag metaphor before, nice. would you mind if i were to borrow it for casual conversation?

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

Ha ha, I just came up with that 5 minutes ago. I was going to say something like “since the Boris Yeltsin came to power” but then I remembered that China still has their huge red flag, so I decided to hop in the way-back machine. I’m not Pat Riley, I’m not going to copyright that (“threepeat” … oops, I just cost Alex $5 by typing that). It’s yours man; run with it.

  • N71

Jurkin and Patterson are defense first players. Blackman I don’t know enough about yet. How much will defense play in who signs next. Everyone we’re in on can score at will, but who can defend really well? I wonder if this could tell us who signs next. If we go purely on defense assume all can score is the answer Hanner? Next I think is Yogi assuming it’s not in the post. Can Cody defend? Again, I know they can all score.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

    He was 57 previously.

  • stonaroni

It will be interesting to see how Guy adapts to life in Bloomington. I am a really pulling for him. He seems like a great kid and very well spoken. I bet he improved as much over the summer as what he did in 2 years at JUCO. The kid has been playing basketball for 4 years. Wow! His friend forced him to play it when 16 and he began to like it. You have to be a natural athlete to pick up the game so well in a short time.

Just imagine what 2 blocks, 6 rebounds, 8 points, 5 altered shots and a drop step dunk will do for this team per game.

The lunch room? Really? The ultimate would have been Coach Crean serving the school lunch when Weber showed up…

  • N71

If you look at last year all he really needs to do is defend and that will free the other 4 guys on the floor to do some other needed things. Guy doesn’t need to do too much, just occupy the other 5 and alter some interior shots, that would help the others at the 4 and 3 so much. Last year the other bigs we had we so bad they couldn’t even be in the right position let alone react to a shot. Man were they bad…looked good though getting off the bus. If he can just cover the basics that should really allow Derek, Tom, and Bobby to develop at the 4 spot. Not fair to ask them to bang with a 5 that has 40 pounds and 3 inches on them. They’ll get discouraged or hurt.

  • stonaroni

Don’t worry about the rankings GFDave, whoever annointed themselves the guru of recruiting seems to be way off every year. Look back at the past four years of the top 100 put out by the recruiting sites and if you are a true college bball fan you will recognize about 50%. And, 50% of those are legit players in college.

There is no way a guy like Gabe York (Class of 2012) is better than Patterson. York is ranked as the #7 SG in that class ahead of Patterson. He and Buss are the same size. York’s laundry list of scholly offer’s is Oregon State. Yes, thee basketball powerhouse Oregon State. Yet Patterson is ranked a few spots behind this York guy and Buss has offers from IU, Purdue, Tenn, XU, Ohio St, Illinois, etc. I am going to trust that the college coaches can judge talent better than the clowns who try to attach their name to talent all summer in their “rankings”.

AE is another example. He is rated as the #22 SF in the country. He has better offers from 7 or 8 guys infront of him, and he committed over a year ago, so his list was only going to become more impressive. He dropped out of the rankings all together because he missed a tournament in May due to an injury. Seriously, did he have to reteach himself how to walk, run, shoot, and play the game? On top of this, one magazine rated him as the #2 shooter in 2011 the #1 shooting SF. That magazine is headed by Mike Decoursey, a very good college basketball columnist and analyst.

On top of this of the 20 or so SF ranked ahead of him how many have a complete game like his? He could very easily be considered a top 50 recruit for his class if it were based on fundamentals and floor game not how ridiculous his dunks are in AAU or how bad he cheats and cherry picks on defense.

CZ is ranked between #25 and #30 in most cases but he very easily could start and be the #1 freshman in America, better than Teague at UK or Rivers at UF.

He could be a #1 draft pick some day in the NBA. How many guys are 6’10″ and can shoot and run the floor? Dirk?

Evan Turner was ranked #49 coming out of high school as a SF, yet he played PG last year and was #2 in NBA draft. I bet Mr. Rivals Recruiting Guru didn’t have that pegged.

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

Speaking of the way-back machine … well done, detective! I’m going to guess this is Rob — either Erwin or McKnight, I can’t decide.

  • stonaroni

Here is more. VJIII was rated as the #34 PG in the nation in high school and was barely in the top 150. He avg 15ppg last season, over 16 ppg in Big10 play. And, he is more of a SG than PG.

Deandre Liggins was ranked as #5 PG and #37 overall. You would think he would be a stud by now, but he can barely find the floor, has a broken shot and is anything but a PG. He plays good defense, that is about it.

Iman Shumpert was ranke #18 in the class and #3 at SG. He is at Georgia Tech and has avg 10ppg for 2 years now. That is solid but is he that much better than VJIII?

  • HoosierNshaker

ALL I can say to CTC is….BRING HOME ZELLER!!!

  • Anonymous

    “Sloppy Joe; Slop, Sloppy Joe…”

  • GFDave

Thanks for all the work, but actually I’m not too caught up in the rankings. The question was more about how it was predicted that he would slip once he committed. Gives insight into how the thing works and what drives the business model. Obviously not kids who have already chosen their school.

  • Anonymous

    The former.

Unlike Dubs, I never tire of your cynicism, especially when it regards UK basketball.

  • Baseball Montgomery Buc

Glenn Robinson Jr. Commits to Michigan. Solid get for them.

  • Anonymous

All this CTC refferencing has led me to downing a whole box of Cinamon Toast Crunch……………. I am so stoked on what Crean has done and is doing and through the last 2 seasons that thought has never waivered. Coach is putting together something special here and we are all going to be a part of that story. Indiana basketball will once again be feared and it wont be much longer.

  • Anonymous

Way to get after these guys CTC. I would give up MNF and any special access all season in return for Perea alone. I just love the level of passion he shows in everything, especially the positivity and energy he has when you talk to him in person. Just a great leader all around. And I feel very confident that he will reap the benefits of taking this extra time to visit players and their families instead of attending other fun events.

And as a matter of fact because of the person CTC is I’m feeling a good vibe with the Zeller visit today just like every other interaction he has with potential players. Just look at the last three commits (Jurkin, Patterson, Blackmon Jr.), they are all high quality players and individuals. This is the level of talent he will continue producing thanks to his work ethic and ability to build relationships. We are going to be a very competitive team sooner rather than later and if these kids don’t want to ride this train there is a line behind you so you better grab a seat soon.

“By the time he got to us, I guess what we had to do …”

Martin paused before continuing: “Well, I ain’t even going there with that. I’m going to my grave with that.”

I hope pUKe and Calipari get what they deserve…

  • Anonymous

If Calipari goes down soon, what happens with Teague?

  • Yogi Kelin Zeller

according to Rivals Hanners only offer is Indiana, interesting if true.

  • The_Hall_Monitor

i watched hollowell play in a league game with etherington yogi and buss and he did not impress me at all he was lazy getting up the floor and got knocked around in the post and air balled two threes

  • Casey B.

He’ll go searching for the next best one-and-done, straight-to-the-NBA factory. In my book, once you choose to leave the state of Indiana for UK, you’ve pretty much burned the bridge leading back to Bloomington, regardless of what happens down the road.

I honestly don’t think I’d want him to consider coming to IU again.

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

Javier was my first inclination (Leon was definitely second, especially since you didn’t reference the deriving your basketball knowledge from a dead guy at Ace Hardware … too soon?). And I totally forgot that we called him Dubs. It’s almost been ten years, dude! I feel like we should have a catch-up session via e-mail or something (mine is firstname.lastname@gmail.com — I’ll let you fill in the blanks).

I’m glad to see we’re still bound by the strongest ties: love for IU, hatred for UK.

  • The_Hall_Monitor

i watched hollowell play in a league game with AE yogi and buss and he didnt impress me at all he was lazy getting up and down the floor, he was getting knocked around in the post and he air balled two threes

    Amen.

I’m not big into the hating UK stuff, but I agree completely that Teague should go elsewhere if Kentucky’s program runs into issues.

in regards to the pUKe discussion going on in this thread. my friend sent me this, hilarious.

  • garyindiana_311

calipari will not go down, once again there is no evidence tying him to this. pUKe will keep him, look at bruce pearl, they wouldn’t fire him because their program would fall right back off the map without him.

  • Anonymous

It is pretty amazing when you consider the Pearl situation. Prior to it happening, just the idea of a coach getting caught lying to the NCAA and keeping his job would have been nearly unthinkable…or would it? I guess Pearl’s situation is still in motion… and the NCAA could bring down the hammer themselves.

It’s almost not fair to compare another coach to Calapari.

  • Anonymous

My computer at work sucks. What I was trying to say was thanks for explaining CTC’s tweet last night. Not sure how I missed that. Obviously he’s not committing infractions and tweeting about it. And it sounds like he used his time wisely.

  • Anonymous

“…the next best one-and-done, straight to the NBA factory…” um, sounds like Ohio State.

  • Anonymous

Maybe Webber choked on his mystery meat.

  • it’s Indiana

    “Hey Weber…you’re SCARING us!”

  • garyindiana_311

what is the incentive for tenn to fire pearl? fall back into obscurity? they will be any way without him. makes sense to me for the AD to keep him. take the penalties, dock his pay, suck for a few years, and then be decent again after it blows over.

  • Anonymous

I’d don’t care what grades Bledsoe got on his transcripts, in his classes, or at UK—I’d just love to play him in Trivial Pursuit for his first-year NBA salary!

  • Anonymous

Has Zeller had any other of his in-home visits yet? If not, Crean’s in the drivers seat. The most personal meeting (in-home) happens first with Crean. Crean/IU is Cody’s last official visit.

Crean gets him first and Crean gets him last. I think that combo is an ideal position in a situation such as this… let’s hope it bears fruit.

  • Diesel

Brad Stephens and Matthew Graves were there on day 1

  • Anonymous

I didn’t realize it was in-home visit they took on day 1, thought it was just a visit to the open gym where he was playing. If that’s the case… has Roy/UNC had their in-home with him yet? I haven’t seen that yet.

  • marsh21

It’s funny to me for Ron Patterson to continue the fall down the rankings. This kid is legit and will become a beast at IU! He is an all Big Ten player and will become a thorn in Purdue’s side for four years.

    Love it!

  • Uncle Joey

“I made ‘em extra sloppy for ya!!”

  • Casey B.

You’re correct. The Butler coaches attended one of Cody’s workouts. It wasn’t an in-home visit.

Funny though, I figured the in-homes would occur after Cody’s three official visits. I don’t really know if there’s anything to read into as far as the timing of all of this goes. Hopefully today’s in-home visit with Crean was a positive experience.
