adidas Invitational Video: Cody Zeller

2011 Washington (IN) forward Cody Zeller was arguably the most impressive prospect on the opening day of the July evaluation period at North Central High School in Indianapolis. We’ve compiled 28 clips of the versatile 6-10 IU target from three games (Dream Vision, Dallas Mustangs and Riverside Hawks) at the adidas Invitational in the embedded media player below. Enjoy.

….. wow ….. my mouth is still dropped. he is a MUST for IU

  • amkhoosier

In all honesty I don’t think that Coach Crean’s system needs a back to the basket center. Players like CZ would fit perfectly in Coach Crean’s system. I really hope that CZ ends up a Hoosier!!!

Great work guys, and here's hoping we get the program changers we need (Davis and Zeller)

  • zlm95

he looks REALLY GOOD. i would love to get him.

  • Kelin Blab

    cody zeller
+ It is amazing how 3 brothers have similar games
+ He is going to be a load for other big men to guard, especially if his handle improves
+ He is not a center in college
+ I could see him doing well with a PG like Hulls with a pick and pop
+ Not sure how much bigger I want him to get, I like a lean look.

  • marsh21

He's got a European style to his game which will be a nice touch to IU's offensive approach. If he can handle the ball and learn how to create space this kid could be a load.

    Let's hope.

  • fkim

    He's absolutely blowing up, doubters

  • GFDave

I agree with Kelin and marsh that he is not a true back to the basket player. But that's ok, cause he does a lot of other stuff really well and he seems to be able to impact the game from different places on the court (post, wing, key). I still don't see him as being THE guy on a B10 team, but he may change my mind before his HS career is over.

  • kristheboss

I thought his body control was great, he was able to face up alot and then take his man off the dribble to the basket. Thought he played awesome w/ etherington, farrell, plumlee and him and a great high low that the Kansas team could not contain at all… overall very impressed w/ CZ.

  • Luke72

Looks like n ext year’s Mr. Basketball , no question. Keep at it Austin!!

  • JerryCT

Suppose CZ can pass the ball . What are the chances that :

IF we land CZ , THEN CTC morphs his offense to a Princeton style free lance motion run through him at the 5 ??? Does he have the passing skills for this ?

  • IUfanPurduePhD

Yeah, that outside shot would be killer with a pick & roll if he fades. I'd like him to put on 15-20 pounds of muscle; I don't think that would diminish quickness, but it would allow him to withstand a B10 season without getting beat up (and help him with boxing out).

  • IUfanPurduePhD

Any time you've got a baby hook in the repertoire, you can be a back-to-the-basket player… I'm not saying that's what he should become (because I think you're right), but if he's got a smaller/slower guy on him, that hook would be undeniable.

  • Kelin Blab

It will be interesting to see how Crean adjust his offense if the Zellers of the world commit, in fact he will have too. I don't know what McClain did at wyoming but his footprint is being felt all over this program. There was a knock on zeller last year about being too unselfish and looking to get teammates involved. I believe the ability is there.

  • Dmglotz

I disagree. Did you see how many times CZ was ahead on the fast break for an easy basket? The film was edited to very short clips so it wasn't noticeable, but this guy can get up and down the court. What I like best is his court awareness and the fact that he will be a solid 4 year player.

  • Uncle Joey

He'll have to beat out Marquis Teague to earn it… I'm not sure that'll happen.

  • Hardwood83

Absolutely- a 6'10″ish guy with a jump hook is unstoppable within 8-10ft of the basket. The fact he can square up and hit medium jumpers….well that makes it a very tough match-up.

  • GFDave

What I'm saying is that he has to get there first and I'm not sure he will be able to carve out that space with his build. I watched Tyler have trouble with that very thing this year. I'll happily be wrong, but to me its a wait and see thing.

  • IUfanPurduePhD

Yeah, he's certainly not going to be backing anyone down Shaq-style (or even Pritch-style) … he'll have to beat his man down the court (which you said), or get a low block screen from a beefy dude like Guy.

  • Kelin Blab

Uncle Joey, the way things work in Indiana is, if you choose a state school your chances of winning Mr. Basketball goes up. If you choose IU, it is a done deal. Ofcourse Marquis is rated higher and is a flat out stud, but without choosing a state school or a having a state title he has no chance of Mr. Basketball. None….

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

I don't even think he received votes for last year's All-State teams. His chances to win Mr. Basketball are zero.

I don't even think he received votes for last year's All-State teams. His (Teague) chances to win Mr. Basketball are zero.

  • Kelin Blab

Mr. Basketball is Zeller's to lose and the only way he loses it is if he chooses to play soccer instead of basketball next year…

    1. Zeller
    2. Zeller
    3. Dawson
    4. Teague

  • marcusgresham

Don't forget, Woody Austin beat Shawn Kemp for Mr. Basketball.

  • DowningV

Zeller is a dork. His feet are slow. His shot is mechanical. The limitations in his athleticism are obvious. Hope he goes to Butler. Branden Dawson is the Indiana kid that could put IU back on the map.

  • Mlbdjb

    Kelin,

Really enjoy your posts as well as everyone else's on ITH. I really hope CZ winds up at IU, but my biggest concern is Cody has said all along he is going to take all 5 of his official visits and I just wonder if IU will even have a scholarship available by the time, if, Cody decides he wants to come to IU. Honestly, IU is in a position where if someone in the top 100 commits to IU, Crean really can't balk. He has to take anyone in the top 100 who says they want to play there. What do you think about that and the possiblilty we may not even have a schollie available by the time Zeller has used all his viisits and makes his decision?

  • Kelin Blab

They are holding a scholarship for Cody without a doubt. If you notice IU is only recruiting one big man in the 2011 class. Just one and that is Cody. They have made it clear to him he is their guy so I don't expect that to happen.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

Wouldn't worry about an open scholarship for Zeller. He's got a spot if he wants to come to Bloomington.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

That video really, really makes it obvious this kid is a must have for IU!!! Wow, as many of you have said I'm sure, but, man he was quick to go up with the ball to dunk it or lay it in and he's got a real nice jumper as well. There were some guys his size in those clips he was competing against and he went up pretty strong. Obviously there is still room to improve and get stronger but I was impressed and my mind was changed as I now feel Zeller is the top 2011 recruit and a must get!

  • iubase

I like his attitude. It does help to have him encourage yogi and cody to come – friendships and compatibity on and off the court are very important for team chemistry and this is a great sign…..he has a nice handle and jump shot and looks good….still like what I saw in Perrea and Dawson – Austin could you put a plug in with them too.
