Trio of 2013 talents grab early offers from IU

by in Recruiting | June 14th, 2010

As the recruiting game continues to place an emphasis on identifying talent at an early age, the Indiana staff is hitting the ground running with the class of 2013.

A trio of AAU teammates — Hamilton Southeastern’s Zak Irvin, Heritage Christian’s Basil Smotherman and Warren Central’s Devin Davis (pictured) — have been offered scholarships by Indiana.

“No one can say that Coach Crean isn’t putting the emphasis on Indiana kids now,” Matt Green, who coaches the group on the Eric Gordon All-Stars, told Inside the Hall. “He’s going after the top kids in that class.”

According to Green, Davis was offered on an unofficial visit to Bloomington last month while Irvin and Smotherman picked up offers at this past weekend’s Elite Camp.

The 6-6 Davis and 6-4 Smotherman both started varsity on their high school teams this past season, but Irvin, a 6-4 guard, has yet to log a minute above the junior varsity level. Still, the IU staff saw the potential to give Irvin the early offer, which was his first.

“With Irvin, it’s a little different because he didn’t play any varsity. He’s played good in the spring,” Green said. “Coach Crean puts his eyes on him at Elite Camp and likes what he sees. Some could say he pulled the trigger early with him never having varsity time and some could say he winds up being a legit, very-high profile kid and hey, he rolled the dice and got it right.”

Here’s a quick breakdown of the trio from Green:

“Devin Davis is your Mr. Everything. He’s a great rebounder, he’s a slasher. He gets a lot of baskets in the paint. He consistently plays with a high motor.”

“Basil is a perimeter threat. At any point in time he can get it going and start killing you from the outside. His mid-range game is getting a lot better.”

“Zak is a streaky shooter. He gets it going and he can bury you. He’s probably got the best mid-range game of all of them.”

Keep an eye on Jake Thompson, 6-3, rising soph PG from Wawasee. Varsity starter last year on a regional finalist team. Averaged 30 a game in the state tourney.

  • stonaroni

I want to see some signings too, but there are good sign as Kelin has mentioned. I think we might see a signing soon, but I really think some of the 2011 guys want to see what this team looks like on paper and in practice come October, November, December and January!

Maybe a 10-4, 11-3 start next year with some increased defensive intensity will help bring Zeller, JDavis, Perrea, etc. to the table.

Anyone wonder if JDavis’ verbal will be contingent upon Izzo staying at MSU?

  • Diesel

I like the offers. Unreal to think this could be the crew replacing the Hulls/Elston/Creek/Watford/Capo/Bawa class.

  • marsh21

Crean is doing what we all want and that's forming those relationships with Indiana kids early on. It's a formula that will pay dividends.

    Go IU!

  • IUBABY

I love it sounds good. Crean took a lot of heat this year and I was one don’t get me wrong over not being able to get the indiana kids. But we do have to give him a break he didn’t understand how the state felt about that, now he does and he isnt going to mess up again even if it is passing up top 50 out of state players he is going to give indiana what we wanted
    THANK YOU CTC

  • MillaRed

I've decided over the next four years I'm going to focus on who signs opposed to who is offered. It's noted the Irvin offer was risky. But until he signs it means little to me. Furthermore, I need to see the kid play as a junior before I suggest it was a bad move. We'll talk it over again in 2015.

I really liked the 2010 class. But outside of that I am not exactly overwhelmed. I'm thinking someone is going to commit soon. Ready for some good Hoosier news.

  • Kelin Blab

Milla..I can't remember the last good Hoosier news? and that is good news that we all considered good….

+It very well could have been the Oladipo signing.
+ not the Guy signing, that was 50/50
+ IU's APR, seriously how many of us really care about the kids gpa in comparison to Zeller, Thomas, Patterson, Davis etc.?

  • MillaRed

Kelin you make a great point. The APR score is great news. When you think about where we were, it's a huge step for the program. It's unfortunate IU was so far behind they needed to get there in the first place. But we have to look at the big picture. And Crean gets props for pulling all of that in the right direction.

Is it the kind of news that excites Hoosier fans under normal circumstances? No, it's not. However, these are not normal circumstances.

Now, Perrea, sign the offer sheet man!

  • Azur_allen

on espnu super 25 for 2012 they have aj hammons at 14, peter jurkin 16, dsr at 24, and hanner perea at 25. it says hammons is down to iu and xavier, perea iu and baylor. how accurate is this? and it is reasonable to assume a class of hammons, dsr, perea, and someone less highly ranked, like a yogi farrell or ron patterson? are hammons and perea iu leans?

  • Kelin Blab

stonaroni….I think outside of Izzo, JD is the other person that has alot to think over as it relates to Izzo leaving. I am sure this decision is weighing heavy on the kid, but I hope it works out in IU's favor…..something has too.

An 10-4, 11-3 start with maybe a big ten/acc win, good showing at Kentucky or maybe win given we will be the more EXPERIENCED team would help. Wow IU has upper classmen and more experience, there is hope.

  • Kelin Blab

The espnu super 25 are out of their minds. Hammons nor Jurkin should be ahead of Perea. I anticipate IU getting Jurkins before Hammons.

  • Tberry

No way there will be a “10-4, 11-3 start next year”. Next year is still a progression BUT maybe the next!!!

  • Kelin Blab

Unless they go High on the sugar early next year with alot of cupcakes…..

  • eph521

I seem to recall several of the kids saying late June/ early July is when they would decide their college choice… Thomas, Kaminksi… so maybe we're only a few weeks away from some “good news”.

  • hoosierclarion

I share the view of IU owning a 11-3 record to start off next years season. As was stated earlier there will be upperclassmen this year and they will have talent. They will have a mindset to barnstorm the out of conference schedule.

  • JerryCT

Of course I hope we get a fast start but really donot know. One thing for sure however the “youth” and “time in the program” excuses are gone and I hope forever.

Last night I rewatched the Minn game at home in January where we won in OT. If we play like that we can be the team we all hope to see. Highlights which I hope project to next year were:

    1. Rivers won the game w defense on Joseph, passing, rebounds , and also played the baseline in the 1-3-1 zone in overtime
    2. Jones got the clutch points
    3. Elston hit Rivers on a nice high post pass to the cutter( love to see more of that from both)
    4. Lineup at endgame was CW, DE, JR, VJ, JH
    5. TP held Sampson3 to no FG's and 1 Reb until last 1/3 of 2nd half

If you recall the team was down 5 ( thanks to VJ defense ) with 2 minutes left in OT and showed the toughness to stay with it and win

  • IUfanPurduePhD

Is the 2010-11 schedule out yet? It's not on IU's official website…

  • IUfanPurduePhD

BSPN is probably thinking “height = better” … and they're probably also trying to make their list different than Rivals/Scout so that people will mention their rankings on other websites (appropriately followed by “they're out of their minds”).

  • Outoftheloop

If you re-look at the IU v MI win you will also see that the game was won by great defense by Rivers on Manny Harris. Then look at the IU v MI loss at MI. Rivers was nowhere to be found in guarding Harris. In fact, after the win v MN Rivers defense was mostly absent. How can your leader do that? Jeremiah, be your own worst critic, dig deep, and make that “big step” that we all hope that you can make, to elite status!

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

It usually doesn't come out until around August.

  • Outoftheloop

Everyone on the sports blogs in the State of Indiana likes to say that Purdue now rules in recruiting the state. Terone Johnson is a very good recruit, but Carroll is not as good as Guy Michel, and Hale may or may not be at Purdue sometime, but he will not be there for 2010-11. I like Hopkins and Fromm, but they are certainly not as good as, or any better than, Oladipo and Sheehey. If you recall Knight's first big recruiting class was Buckner (IL), May (OH), Crews (IL), and Wilkerson and Abernathy (IN). Sounds exactly like the diverse makeup of the 2009 recruiting class at IU under Crean only different states and regions!!

  • IUfanPurduePhD

    Thanks, Alex!

  • Uncle Joey

I really don't see why JDavis is considering MSU. Yes, I realize how successful they've been lately, but I feel like he's going to get buried behind quite a bit of talent at MSU, whereas he'd have a pretty significant role early on at IU. Looking at the 2011 recruits who have already committed, they already have 2 decent shooting guards. And if JDavis really thinks he's got a legit shot at being a PG, then he'll have to fight for time behind 2010 commit Keith Appling (4 star). Couple that with the fact that Izzo has as good chance of bolting to the NBA….?

Maybe I'm a biased IU fan, but I feel like its a no-brainer if IU and MSU are his top schools :)

  • Outoftheloop

Do you want 13 scholarship players or only 11? The APR news was VERY GOOD! If we win 20 games this year and play in the post-season, it will be because the Guy Michel signing was VERY GOOD news. If you want DSR as an IU recruit for 2012, then his turning down McCloud was VERY GOOD news! If you like Aaron Thomas as an IU recruit for 2011, he is there for the taking if we REALLY ask him! That is good news.

  • Uncle Joey

I think its a commonly agreed upon notion that ESPN rankings are kind of a crapshoot. I would only take their rankings with a grain of salt.

Scout and Rivals are much better, and are genuinely more accurate.

  • Outoftheloop

    What verbal??

  • Outoftheloop

    Good points.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

Just my opinion, but I would prefer Scout's rankings over Rivals. I think Telep and Daniels do a better job overall.

  • MillaRed

As you all know, there is not a bigger ITH Rivers fan than yours truly. I have a JR lunch box. If he can do anything next year I will be pleased. I see his dad coaching the Celtics and I think, “What happened here?”

    Is IU experienced next season?

    PG – Rivers, Sr.
    SG – Mo, SO
SF – Jones, JR (if any of you really think he is sitting you're high)
    PF – CW, SO
    C – Guy, JR

It looks like it has some experience on paper. But they haven't played together much. I think the bench is the key to any success.

    11-3 start? I don't think that's reasonable folks.

  • marcusgresham

I think Jurkin before Hammons would be my preference.

  • Kelin Blab

Call me crazy, but JR has NBA potential…on paper….

    + 6'5 PG
    + Strong
    + Fast
    + Strong basketball background
    + Good defender
    + Very good athlete

What holds him back from being the next Rondo, is his shooting, leadership, and attitude. I can't say too often I saw JR during the season be that team guy, helping teammates, chest bumping someone else's good play, or waving that towel on the bench.

  • GFDave

Is there a service that tracks the performance of kids in college and how it compares to the projections?

  • IUfanPurduePhD

These three remain, “shooting, leadership, and attitude,” and the greatest of these is SHOOTING. (The NBA clearly doesn't have a problem drafting guys that lack leadership or have disruptive attitudes: see Cousins, Derrick; Artest, Ron; etc.)

  • MillaRed

If you listen to a lot of the top recruits they mention immediate playing time. With Hummel, Moore, JJ and company returning there isn't a lot of PT to be had. I think Purdue was affected by all of that. Needless to say they better have a great year or it was a bust.

  • JerryCT

You have a long way to go before you are crazy. I too did not like how JR seemed to disappear toward the end of the year but I donot think that is who he is.

Basically if we are to get the start to the season you have previously stated we NEED JR to begin the season well. He fits what CTC wants to do better than any of our top guards:

    1. rebounds better than any guard
    2. not only is his defense much better he is versatile in the defense
    3. speed in transition is the best
    4. only player who can on his own drive 1 on 1 and get to the basket

………… all we are asking is just a little touch on the ball …….. just a little.

  • Kelin Blab

Milla if you saw his brother you would really wonder what happened. I agree with VJ not sitting and I would be pissed if he did. I am on my own little Island with VJ3 defense, as I could care less if he ever became a solid defender, I feel better with him on the floor than not….He has too many big shots in him to sit…that is what Guy is for….

JR ain't startin', Elston will start from now on through his senior year at the 4….VJ is the PG as my prediction.

True on and good point on the experience, but at least they are not all frosh and soph.
Finally I hope like hell prior to the big ten IU gets a good 5-6 cupcake wins, get a couple of tourney wins in Vegas I believe, hopefully one over Alford and Eman, then get win v KY or BC. The 11-3 would be a stretch but with enough cupcakes and a good tourney draw…10-5 going into the big ten would be huge…..

Jerry very good point on #4, he was the only one who could get to the basket consistently….

  • MillaRed

I too am on the VIII at PG bandwagon. Was merely showing the “potential” for
    “experience.”

If Rivers finds a way into the starting lineup he must have really figured
things out. However, it moves CW back to the 4 position.

The good news is we are having good problems with the added depth. Plus the
lineup seems much more flexible this year. With a combination of CW and two
of the other bigs, Guy, Elston, Pritch or Bobby, we can finally, for the
    love of The Almighty……go BIG!

  • marsh21

Did you also watch the next 11 games? If we play like that? Man we all are reaching just a bit don't you think?

Our team will be much different this next season and much more competitive.

I would delete that recording and move on.

  • marsh21

Well I think you're crazy. How about shot selection, passing, driving the ball and looking for the open man, floor vision and many others.

He needs to focus on his degree and look forward to doing something other than playing basketball.

  • Kelin Blab

If we could go big, I would love our match ups with Wisconsin alot better with those big lumbering trees they have guarding 6'9 Christian or Elston on the perimeter. I would also love to throw Guy, Pritch, Capo, and Bawa at J. Johnson for 40 minutes and use every foul we have to knock him around.

  • marcusgresham

    and Rondo can't shoot either!

  • IUfanPurduePhD

Accountability and reflection? Pssh, this is the internet GFD, those things are impossible (Mel Kuyper is right about as many times as he is wrong, but there he is every year making bold predictions…).

  • stonaroni

JR is not respected by the other players, there are issues with his attitude.

VJIII at point would be sweet. A few less points, a couple more assists and a few less shot would leave VJII at 10ppg, 5 reb and 4 asst.

CW and MC will be at 15ppg, and maybe elston can be a 10 and 6 guy and Guy can be an 8 and 8 guy. That would be close to 60 ppg from starters with another 15 to 20 ppg from the bench.

Good rebounding will result in 20 ish wins

  • MillaRed

Dont worry Kelin. JJ will draw his fouls. If he does nothing else he
will draw 15 fouls. I hate watching it.

  • HoosierSmitty

I've still heard that Ball State is a possibility for the kid…wanting to stay local and make a big impact at a smaller Division I school.

  • stonaroni

10-4 or 11-3 and an 9-9 Big Ten is a NIT bid. We will be NIT bound.

  • Outoftheloop

Jones for Rivers at PG, Watford for Jones at SF, and Elston for Watford at PF. Then for defensive pressure everywhere, coming from behind and fast break tempo: Rivers for Jones PG, Oladipo at SG, Sheehey at SF, and 2 out of the 3 of Creek, Watford and Elston, and “Run-Baby-Run”! For Big teams: Guy/Bawa C, Capo/Pritchard PF, Watford/Elston SF, Creek/Oladipo/ Sheehey/ Roth SG, and Jones/Rivers/Hulls at PG. To close out a game we lead: Watford, Elston, Creek, Jones, Hulls. IU wins 20.

  • marcusgresham

If that's the case then good for him, but if he's talking garbage about IU he's lost his mind because Ball State has been terrible for most of the decade.

  • wmrobinson

When I lived in Muncie I heard he was getting pointers from Bonzi Wells. Maybe he is talking Davis into the Muncie Central to Ball State connection, but i doubt it. If the kid wants national exposure the MAC isnt the place for it.

  • stonaroni

The one he plans to make in the next month or so. Izzo told the Cavs no so MSU still is alive in the JDavis sweepstakes.
