Good, Bad and Ugly: Pitt

by in Good Bad Ugly | December 9th, 2009

THE GOOD: A BIG WIN, SOME CONSISTENT PLAY.

First, the big picture: It got a little too close for comfort at the end of the game, and it took longer than some IU fans would have liked, but the Hoosiers finally have a signature win under Tom Crean. Yes, Pitt isn’t at full strength. Yes, they are projected to finish in the bottom half of the Big East this year. But this was still a team that came in to the game 7-1, and was favored to win the game on a court they’re far more comfortable with than IU. Congrats are also in order to Tom Crean, who notched his 200th career win with the victory.

The story of this one? IU outworked and out-hustled Pitt the whole night. They deserved to win this game. Their zone was active around the arc; they closed in quick on open shooters. But, the Hoosiers also seemed to have caught Pitt at the right time: they only scored 47 points Friday in a win, and tonight their offensive woes continued. Sure, IU’s D deserves some credit, but Pitt only shot 31.4 percent from the floor tonight. They were sloppy at points, and had 15 turnovers on the evening. It’s clear their halfcourt game is a work in progress right now, and the Hoosiers capitalized on it. They had a plan, and executed it.

Big ups to Verdell Jones. He had 20 points on the night, and hit some key shots. Sometimes Jones get lost in the shuffle when we talk about Maurice Creek and Christian Watford being able to score in bunches, but when Jones in on, when he’s pulling some crafty moves out of his pockets like he did tonight, he’s a joy to watch.

The Hoosiers only had 12 turnovers tonight, and they finally shot well as they hit 24-of-54 shots from the floor for 44.4 percent. (They were only 1-of-7 from three-point land, though.) Good things happen when you shoot a respectable percentage from the field and take care of the ball. They dominated in the paint, too: 40 points for them, while Pitt managed half that at 20. And they were able to dominate the free-throw game as well: the Hoosiers converted on 25 of their 34 attempts, good for 73.5 percent. Pitt had 17 foul shots on the night, and converted 12 of them.

This was the type of display IU fans were hoping to see in Puerto Rico and against Maryland, but didn’t get. If the Hoosiers can build off this win and the confidence they’ve gained from it, they should be able to stay competitive in Big Ten play, and maybe even surprise a bit.

THE BAD AND UGLY: THE END.

On nights like tonight, it’s hard to gripe much about this team, especially where they’re at right now with so many new faces and schemes. But Indiana did have some trouble finishing this game out. They were up 18 points with 2:58 to play, and saw the league shrink to six with 58 seconds to go. In two minutes, a blowout became a game that was too close for comfort. Part of Pitt’s comeback was because they finally started hitting shots. But Indiana had some trouble with Pitt’s pressure, they had some lapses on the defensive end and they didn’t seal up on the boards. The Panthers ended up out-rebounding IU 45-39, including 21 offensive boards. They had some key offensive rebounds late, and it helped keep them within striking distance. If Pitt converts more of their second-chance opportunities, this game may have ended up in the loss column for IU.

But alas: it did not. IU moves to 4-4 on the season with a big win over Pitt.

Bring on the Wildcats.

    the good-
-our defense was much improved (Thank you Coach Crean).
-we showed a nose for loose balls and rebounds
    -tom pritchard hit layups.
-pitt played man to man, thank you coach dixon! (we look like a different team against a zone)
-verdell jones kept his head up on a few drives.
    -maurice creek. enough said.
-bobby C put in his first quality minutes of the year.
    -tom C outcoached dixon.
-rivers defense and passing and all around game, he does the little things, i like that. (one question: in your year off, jeremiah, why didn't you develop an outside shot??? he would be nba caliber easy if he did that)
-dumes started to show signs of realizing he isn't our only offensive threat this year, i.e. he started to develop some semblance of shot selection. he is so good on d, once he fits his offensive game into our team a little more, he will be a huge asset.

    the bad:
-our inability to close (easily atributed to inexperience thought)
-No bawa?!?! Why coach creen? Jobe is lost out there.
-Hulls comes in and his man on D starts raining threes, he is too much of a liability on D right now.

    The Ugly:
-Tom Pritchard should never be allowed to even try to block shots. why? 1- because he never will block them, 2- he usually fouls instead, 3- even when he doesn't foul but misses completely, he gets called for a foul.
    - Jobe head knock on the hardwood, ouch!
    - Maurice creek deciding to force baseline but slowly convincing himself to give his man a wide open lane to the basket, and then watching him waltz to the hole for a wide open lay-up. i love creek but come on!!! how could you ever position yourself like that!!

IU will see that full court trap all day against Kentucky….it wll be ugly unless the Hoosiers cope a little better than they did against a Pitt team that will win about 18 games.

  • Kelin Blab

plane1972….Maybe I missed something when did Bob do this. Was it after the game? I just blasted bob above for his pre game NON iu talk…..I may owe him an apology

  • BFowler

The REALLY, REALLY GOOD: This one goes in the W column!!!!! The 2nd half from about the 18 minute mark to the 2 minute mark. The grit and toughness this team showed against a gritty, tough team. A lack of turnovers throughout the game; there were spots of multiple turnovers, but overall a very good job. Leadership coming from the players (I’m looking at you, Mr. Rivers). This team looked at least on par athletically with another BCS conference team. Confidence, recruiting potential, and show that Indiana is (at least on it’s way) back. I never heard Dick Vitale say that Assembly Hall should be renamed (unless I was not paying enough attention). I heard Coach Knight mention Indiana outside of using it in the same sentence as lawsuit (is that the sound(?) of melting ice?).

The Bad – Pitt’s offense (or lack thereof). Not trying to nit-pick, but if I was going to point out a bad, you “hold” a team to 30-something percent shooting, and you give up 21 rebounds on the ofeensive glass. I understand Pitt is very physical, but I think the zone (though it played pretty well in the 2nd), leaves us wide open for rebounding lanes because we are not athletic enough to beat peopl to the ball. We have to put bodies on bodies to get rebounds. The zone worked defensively for us, but the rebounding suffred, so six of one, half dozen of the other, I guess. I also think the zone will be the ONLY way we beat KY.

The Ugly: I know it would be easy to say the last two minutes, but I think JR’s back injury may be the ugly. He makes this team go right now, and if he can’t go against KY, that is what the ugly will be. John Wall may go for 50 against Hulls.

HUGE win Hoosiers, we are all proud!

  • Kreigh_Smiths_Short_Shorts

What I think really needs to be emphasized is ONLY 12 turnovers! Twelve! That's roughly ten fewer than last year's average. That is the most significant sign of improvement for this team. You keep your turnovers down to twelve on Saturday, you stay in the game with KY.

  • widget

    Good

Scrappy play from just about everyone on the floor.
Players finding opportunity by being active.
Capo, Derek, Verdell and even Tijan in the mix.

    Bad
Failure to close it out in a way that got them there to begin with. Forget the clock. Break their back.

    The ugly
A win like this? There is no “ugly”.

  • Justin Randall

    Jeff Newton anyone?

  • Anonymous

In line with my expectations. That is not to say that I expected them to beat Pitt last night, specifically. And I fully expect that they will throw some stinkers out there yet this season. At some point, I wanted to see them go beyond a moral victory, and win a game against a team that is arguably on par with them or better. For the balance of this season, I expect to see a steady arc of progress on the stuff which we saw last night — better D, good movement to the offense, reduced turnovers. Next season: I expect some ass to be kicked.

  • NMHoosier

The Good: We got a big win on national TV!
The Bad: Who cares, we won the game!
The Ugly: Really, who cares, we got a huge win!

I know there is still a long way to go, but I am focusing on the positive outcome and soaking in the good vibes from last night. There will be plenty of time for criticism in future games…enjoy the victory for a few days!

  • Neil_Reed

I think one of the main reasons we win this game was our ability to get to the line and convert. Shooting 65% collectively on the season isnt good enough.

  • chris reynolds

watford’s post game is obsolete against this type of competition and size. he leans into his opponent and tries to draw the foul, but effectively tees the ball up to be swatted. im sure this worked for him in HS, but he’ll hopefully retire it as the season moves on, and learn to go up strong with and jump a little.

  • chris reynolds

with respect for mark titus, club trillion, and all the bench warmers striving for excellence, please figure out what “the trillion” is before you use it. if you wanted hulls to score the trillion, you would want him to play under a minute each game. no one wants that.

  • JerryCT

Everyone who played did some really good things last night. I especially credit Capo, Elston and Dumes for playing so well with our starters on the bench. I was at MSG last night and we definitely owned the crowd ……………..and the streets and bars outside MSG.

I felt the key to the game was Rivers and Dumes paying close defensive attention to Gibbs and Wannamaker in the 2nd half . Creek, Jones and Hulls unfortunately need work finding and defending the other teams's scorers from the perimeter.

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

Great win! I've been saying that I thought these guys needed a confidence win over a “real” opponent in the worst way heading into the Big Ten. I'll be happy if IU just looks respectable on Saturday.

Also, I think the late-game comeback from Pitt is actually a good thing. The team can celebrate the win and feel good about themselves, but it allows Crean to bring them back down to Earth and better prepare them for the Kentucky game. He can sort of say, “Hey, great win guys, but I wasn't happy with the last 3 minutes and we still have some things to work on, lets get back to work!”

  • semmoran

I was there too…Crean talked about this being a potential road game or road environment because of Pitt's fans…we easily had twice the number of IU fans in attendance and were wayyyyy louder. The atmosphere was a blast. I wish I could go back to Assembly Hall and watch every IU game the rest of the year…

  • plane1972

I have to admit, it was odd having RMK in the house commenting on Indiana basketball as an outsider. I thought he would find an excuse to talk about everything BUT Indiana, but he did a nice job. I think Saunders and Digger were trying to give him every opportunity to stay comfortable, but it was Knight who kept coming back to Indiana, and it was favorable commentary. Nice job, Coach!

  • harvo

I’m with you Kelin everytime saunders said something about IU Knight commented on Georgetown

  • Kelin Blab

    The Good
+ Bob Knight said the word Indiana once!
+ Got that confidence building win and at the right time prior to the KY game!
+ I saw Crean taking advantage of our mismatches by allowing guards to post up at times
+ I love Elston and Wateford working on the block. They are not Kevin McCale but they are a threat
+ Jerimiah Rivers and Jordan Hulls ran the offense well last night and didn't force things
+ Tijan gave good minutes: Took up space inside, grabbed two big rebounds, contested shots that is enough for me and could be enough against Patrick Patterson
+ Smartest game Dumes played all year
+ A big win on National TV vs a big boy school at The Garden and prior to Kentucky could only help this teams confidence and some good recruiting exposure.
+ I saw some vocal leadership from Hulls and Rivers

    The Bad/Ugly
+ Didn't close out fully but Pitt was desparate
+ Alot of my Love for RMK is being challenged as he seems to be set on not acknowledging IU even exist. The blatent effort to ignore IU and talk about Butler/G'Town or Pitts team LAST YEAR was total Bull#@$! and I am moving towards the being done with Knight group.

Dear Bob….My 8th grade girlfriend dumped me back in rougly 1984, I am happily married now and I got over it…..it is NOT that hard to do.

Mike Davis is GONE, Myles Brand “May he rest in peace” has passed away, and you got another gig, dude you got to get over it………..if Hillman can you can!

  • IUDan

Watching on TV it looked (and sounded) like a very pro-IU crowd . .. well done all!

  • Kelin Blab

plane1972….Maybe I missed something when did Bob do this. Was it after the game? I just blasted bob above for his pre game NON iu talk…..I may owe him an apology

  • cooper

    To go with the theme:

    Good:
    a quality win
    Capo playing quality minutes
Elston playing better against athletic competition
    Dumes played good on D
Rivers ran the team well when he was clearly hurt. When he went out of the game IU struggled. Thought it was great at the end of the game where they showed Rivers during the timeout talking to the team. Showed he was a leader, even announcers mentioned it.
Jones driving and hitting those pull up jumpers
Crean making great second half adjustments on Gibbs
    Jobe played great on D
    Zone D was active
    keeping the rebounding margin close
making free throws and limiting theirs

    Bad
-breaking the press with soft passes
-some questionable substitutions made. I thought it was similar to Ole Miss in the 1st half where IU built the lead, then brought in subs and they came back. Luckily, Crean didn't make this mistake again
-offense is stagnant without Rivers in the game, everyone has trouble getting off shots without him in there. he makes mistakes and can be frustrating but he is the leader no question

    Ugly
Not much was real ugly but if I have to say something I'll go with Pritchard. Had 6pts the first 3 minutes of the game, didn't score again and fouled out. I thought Elston, Capo and Jobe all showed they should play more minutes

  • tberry

Bob Knight was there as an ESPN Analyst. It seemed to me that he was trying to get the commentary back to the IU – Pitt game that was currently being played and away from the others wanting to go back a tell us , once again, how wonderful the Hoyas were, even well after that game was history.

I think that the rest of the commenters, clearly didn't have anything prepared and were speechless that IU was winning.

  • Disco_Briscoe

Good national win over a name opponent. Granted Pitt isn't the Pitt of that year they are still a decent major conference team. The game got scary at the end and it would have been nice to close the game out. We need to play the game from start to finish with patience and intensity.

Jones stop and pop mid range game is really good and you can see it throughout the season. He gets in trouble, when he tryies to get to the bucket in traffic. Bobby C was the most pleasant surprise stepping up with big minutes, playing tough, and scoring inside. Watford and Creek were what we expected. Creek's foul trouble effected his line and I think the NBA 3 line was distracting for him. Dumes finally played his role. Hulls didnt look too good against their faster/stronger guards. Rivers did a great job leading the O and pressure D. You can tell the back was really tightening up as the game went on.

Once again…Jobe! Why is he out there? Is Bawa worse (hard to believe)? The only time he contested a shot was after the whistle when the ball was thrown at his chest and swatted it away. I do appreciate his hustle when out there but it still doesnt amount to much. Pritchard needs to learn how to foul. If you foul a guy, make it count and make sure the ball doesn't go in the hoop. I cant complain about Watford's play but maybe its me…does Watford seem like he's running with 50 lbs on his back?

We need to work on our D. We didn't defend picks/screens well again. I see this as a huge glaring weakness. Pitt didn't push the ball a lot in transition but I think that would have been weak as we seemed slow getting back with some of our combinations on the floor.

I am very interested to see how we do in the UK game. Wall and Patterson will be a true test for the team. Check them out vs an athletic UCONN tonight.

  • indyd

Play a little defense, hit your free throws and don't turn the ball over….

  • Kelin Blab

Disco I think you are waaay off on Wateford it seems like he is running with 100 pounds on his back. This is NOT the kids fault but a stigma he will have to shake as his career goes on, is he runs with long strides, very fluid, and plays very cool! As if he isn't trying hard, when I believe he really is, he just LOOK like cool kid…I could compare his demeanor to Rudy Gay…..

hard to explain…does anyone agree ?

  • jmercer

It was a halftime of the IU/Pitt game. Digger and Saunders were trying to talk Butler/GT but Knight keep commenting (good comments) about IU's 1st half play.

Very cool that Harbaugh gave halftime speech! Maybe Crean could talk his brother-in-law into coaching our football team! If anyone could sell it, Crean could!

  • Walt

Forget the “be happy if IU looks respectable Saturday”

Win – Win – Win………..i know we are huge underdogs, rebuilding, etc. but I will be screaming curses for any and all bad plays IU does not to win this game.

  • maimlarry

A big positive that didn't happen in game: People (most importantly recruits) watched this game and said IU win, and win well. Josh Selby's mom said that he would be watching all his potential teams and see how they respond throughout the year. We got a little roughed up by Maryland, came back and won a road game against Pitt. That's a sign to Selby (and other recruits out there) that we are moving in the right direction.

  • widget

As an '87 grad, I can't help but get nostalgic seeing BK working with ESPN. Over time, I'm forgetting about all of the garbage he put the school through and (for that matter) vice-versa.

I guess what I miss most about him was the man's unbelievable presence in AH. He just made the place. Tome Crean represents the “moving on” phase that we have needed for some time. But seeing Knight at the mike brings back some pretty great memories of my days at IU. And by the way, he was complimentary of the program. I think he finally respects our head coach. He's also a great color guy for ESPN because he just flat out knows the game.

Speaking of knowing the game, Kudos to Jay Bilas. He is as good as it gets for ESPN. Incredible knowledge, intellect and timing. A joy to have the volume up with him….unlike our man Laz.

  • Bama4iu

I agree. Maybe a little like Jay Edwards?

  • http://insidethehall.com Ben_M

Can some one get a handle on whats going on with Bawa? It seems really strange to me that this kid isn't seeing anything but garbage action. When he got 6-8 minutes one game he seemed way more useful than Jobe did, but when he gets garbage time he seems to struggle. I think he needs to get some minutes and me along with other people in hoosier nation can't seem to understand why this guy get no action. Its almost like they are trying to get him to transfer. Would really like some insight on this situation because I don't see how we don't need a big man like this to be active and no word on a redshirt if they even can red shirt him now.

-Great win by the way. I'm having the best day I've had in a long time.

  • JerryCT

Good catch. I was wondering when someone would notice this. It is more than just running. For a guy who jumps center he seems to get his shots blocked alot and does not shoot over anybody. I am mystifyed about his jumping quickness and elevation during the the game yet when he jumps center he extends well.

CT vs KY tonight………can Dyson or Walker handle Walls ? Can Robinson or Oriakhi bang with Patterson and Cousins ? Hopefully our players will be watching

  • Kelin Blab

Jordan Hulls vs John Wall (Let us NOT forget)
*** I wanted to post this as we approach this big game on Saturday. Lest we not forget how and against WHO Jordan Hulls made his name against….John Wall!

Thanks to the Google and ITH for covering/finding this….
    http://www.insidethehall.com/2008/05/07/jordan-

Not to mention I have seen Jordan Hulls hold his own against Marquis Teague and lead his team to a 20+ point victory.

John Wall is a frosh and a frosh playing on the road……

  • iudrew22

btw…this was not Capo's first quality minutes…he played well against GM I think it was…7 pts. 10 boards…he is coming along…If Crean would just play him more minutes…

that layup that Creek allowed was crazy…

  • Kreigh_Smiths_Short_Shorts

    TWELVE!

  • Hardwood83

This sums it up nicely. There are a hundred differant stats, aspects & nuances to analyze about basketball but it's ultimately pretty simple- as you stated. If IU plays like this the rest of the season they'll approach .500. Great effort.

  • Hardwood83

If Hulls somehow humbles Wall I'll buy everyone a steak dinner! Beating the vermin from down south is almost too much to hope for right now….but if they do…..if they do.

  • iuflorida

nice win over a pretty-good Pitt team, love to see same effort against kentucky.Need to keep dishing to the paint,3 pointers are terrible for an iu team!!

  • Marcus Gresham

I'm giddy today, but trying to temper my enthusiasm knowing full-well there will be more days like this ahead this season along with several head-scratchers, as well. If this team could manage to pull together enough to make it to the NIT (or even that other tournament below the NIT, whatever it's called) it would do wonders, if for no other reason than providing a bunch of super-young guys an extra few weeks of practice going into next season.

  • Disco_Briscoe

I'd like to see it for my own eyes…where's the video?

  • IUDan

It's amazing how my outlook improves following a Hoosier win. I don't have any inside information, but my best guess on the Bawa situation is that he's likely behind the curve in terms of learning the offense and/or defense. Remember he missed the summer here, and Crean even mentioned something like he had “almost no coaching” last year.

So I think it's a matter of not just throwing him into games, but getting him into a situation where he can be successful in the flow of the offense/defense and not a liability. I think what compounds the situation is that almost everyone else on the floor is also learning a new system.

All that said, I HOPE we see him get some good minutes in the three games after UK, prior to the B10 season. I would say otherwise he should redshirt, but not sure he's eligible to do that now that he's played some . . .

    Just my 2 cents.

  • Kelin Blab

BOLD STATEMENT ALERT! BOLD STATEMENT ALERT!

If IU beats Kentucky Saturday, I could careless if they win another game between that game and Purdue, then I will start caring again.

  • hooseyes

As far as defending screens goes… It seems like on D, the man guarding the screener is often confused as to whether to stick with the screener or switch to the free man… I noticed it with Elston especially, he would get caught in no man's land where he's halfway between the free guy and the screener which allows both of them the opportunity to make a play. I don't know if he's worried about creating a mismatch or what, but he has to realize that he (and most of the other guys on this team) are athletic enough that they are going to be able to guard smaller, faster players due to their own length and quickness and there will be help for the other guy guarding the screener… If you switch, stick with your man, just following him out a few feet past the screen isn't good enough…

BTW anybody have any good sources or information on the Jio Fontan Alex tweeted about last night?

  • http://www.insidethehall.com Alex
  • HoosierSmitty

    The Good:
    1. We played well for nearly an entire game. Yes, we weren't perfect, but the lapses were minimal. Even at the end of the game, we did just fine and hung in there. The sky did not fall.
    2. 5 minutes before and after halftime. We finished the first half strong. It was tied at 26-26 and we extended to a 33-29 halftime lead. We started the 2nd half a little wobbly, but righted ourselves before Pitt could take control and extened the lead to 6 5 minutes into the 2nd half.
    3. Role Players – Dumes played great D and hit a big 3, Capo had some tough boards and hit his bunnies, Elston was a beast as always, and even Jobe found a way to be productive with a rebound during a key sequence.
    4. Only 12 Turnovers. Until the frantic finish, I think we had less than 10. Great job!
    5. Verdell's short jumper. I'm loving that shot more and more every day.
    6. Free Throws – We made 'em. Yes! Watford was 12-15. That's awesome for anyone let alone a frosh.
    7. Diversity – We're getting consistent play from a number of guys. Just take the pick-to-click calculations and we had 3 guys in the 40s. VJIII had 48, Creek had 46, and Watford had 42 by my count. That's impressive. Plus Capo and Elston were in the 20s off the bench.

    The Bad:
    1. Rivers – He's clearly not 100%, but even at 75% he played a strong game. I just wish he could shoot the ball…at least from the FT line.
    2. Pritchard – Even though two of those foul calls were bogus, he just doesn't seem to get it. When you are in foul trouble, just stay away from contact, period. He started out well, but was a non factor

    The Ugly:
    1. 1-7 from the 3 point line didn't make me very happy. We didn't get many good looks. Probably 3 or 4 were terrible shots.
    2. That's all I can really think of….

  • http://mamalickaboobooday.disqus.com mamalickaboobooday

the pre-game Coach knight was deflecting. I didn't see that halftime talk, I'm glad to hear that he was able to actually talk about them.

  • Bored_in_the_Offseason

Heres a question I want to pose to ITH followers- Was last night's win over a 'pedigreed' program: early, inline with, or late in the development timeline for the program, in your eyes?

  • Hoagland

Love the link Kelin… Go back and look at what some of the same posters from this feed had to say on that one… it makes you realize that everyone needs to bite their tongue or issue a public mea culpa…

Jordan Hulls could put up 'the trillion' (see clubtrillion.blogspot.com ) every night and I would still want him on the floor. He rarely does something that hurts the team out of his own doing. Yes sometimes he gets beat by quicker or stronger guys, but he makes up for it with the head between his shoulders. See the numerous passes hes already made this year that no one else on our team makes. Also, he puts the ball in the right place and to the right teamates to score.

I like Rivers a lot, but drop off out of control under the basket will be shut off by big ten opponents and he hasnt yet found someone that no one else saw like hulls does. These two have different strengths but in terms of seeing the full floor and finding the right guy while taking care of the ball, watch where Hulls is in 2 (3 with a redshirt for Rivers) years from now. Rivers gets open and draws a defense, Hulls simply finds the already existing hole.

John Wall is an incredible basketball player, but for the rebuild we are having now… Hulls is the right guy who will be a leader and cornerstone of this program by his senior year. Lets keep building with local-ish guys (see Hulls, Elston, Capo, Verdell, Pritch) as well as stealing from MD. (see Creek, Oladipo, and hopefully Selby)
