Jamar Smith violates probation, now a wanted man

by Alex Bozich in Opponents | July 29th, 2008

jsmith.jpgJamar Smith, the Illinois guard (and convicted felon) who wrecked his car into a tree while driving drunk early in 2007, had his probation revoked and is being sought by police in Champaign County.

Here’s the scoop, according to The Champaign News-Gazette:

Champaign County State’s Attorney Julia Rietz told The News-Gazette the petition filed Tuesday alleges that Smith violated his probation by drinking alcohol over the weekend. A warrant for his arrest was issued Tuesday morning, and bond was set at $25,000.

The incident that led to the petition happened Friday outside Fubar, a campus bar. Champaign police investigated.

It’s decision time for our good friend Bruce. One has to believe that ties will be cut with Mr. Smith after this report, but with last year’s 13-16 debacle, Brucey might do all he can to keep this criminal around. Raise your hand if you feel sorry for Illinois.

Update: Jamar Smith dismissed from Illinois (FightingIllini.com)

I miss the days of taking off my shirt and getting drunk with a bunch of dudes.

HAHA! I guess that's how they do things in Champaign ...
  • PMK
Not sure how this fits in with the whole "Indiana basketball blog" theme.
  • Don't you think that high level news of conference competitors is relevant to IU basketball?
  • NC Fat Boy
I think the subject is relevant, but the editorial comment at the bottom is unnecessary.

Any situation such as this is not a positive for the image of the Big Ten and is unfortunate.
  • Can't argue with you there.
  • NC Fat Boy
When you live on Tobacco Road rather than the heart of the Big Ten Conference, the perspective changes and becomes more conference oriented. Y'all don't know what it's like in ACCville.... :-)
  • Ummm, I live in Maryland...ACCville:)
  • TomCoverdaleIUHero
This is completely off topic but i was playing call of duty 4 an xbox and some1 told me that IU will never ever win a National Championship again and that players no longer want to play for IU way off topic but it really really angered o well....

    SORRY BRUCE WEBER AH HAHAHA
  • msdiu81
Sorry to hear about this. We have had our share of problems, so I guess I'm happy no more bad news has come from IU and the problems are at another school this time.
  • This is exactly why I am grateful for a TC around hoosier country, he's got the right stuff man.
  • DJW
    Top 10 ...but can't conclude on a 1 to 10 order:

    George McGinnis
    Don Schlundt
    T&D Vanarsdale
    Scott May
    Isiah Thomas
    Quin Buckner
    Steve Alford
    Calbert Chaney
    Walt Bellamy
  • Big A,

Any way of cropping that pic? that picture in the background is sick and not fit to be seen.
  • That's what happens when Brucey recruits all his players from the United States Penitentiary in Marion. Take note of all the orange jumpsuits in the student sections at Dis-Assembly Hall in Champaign, that's not a coincendence. Have you ever heard their chants, like orange crush (the official prison beverage) or their favorite, thug life. Really, who cares about Prison Shank University though, in 3-4 years, Coach Tom Crean will have the IU program eclipsing them again, and Brucey will be coaching at Chipola Junior College.

I know we had our problems but other than a few inhales of marijuana, our players never commited crimes that hindered others. Illinois should have tried to help the kid out instead of finding ways for him to play on the team. When IU sacrifices playing time and overlooks a kid who really need help, I will stop watching IU basketball without any regret.
  • HoosierSmitty
If anyone is raising their hand, I'm chopping it off...freaking Illini
  • HoosierSmitty
let me clarify...I do not feel sorry for Illinois...for the kid, that's a different story...i echo the sentiments of others, and hopefully he can get his act together
  • bahickma
Man, this is unfortunate and really sad. I hope this kid gets his stuff together and everything works out for him in the end.
  • I agree. I want Illinois and especially Bruce Weber to be at the bottom of the Big Ten, but not this way. Hopefully the kid gets his act together, although I do agree that Weber definitely has to cut ties.
  • jgongora86
even though I hate bruce with all the passion in the world, I feel depressed when any kid does actions to hurt a team. i hope he someday gets his stuff in order, and betters himself down the line.
  • I feel bad that it's had to end up this way for Smith, but the fact that Illinois has allowed him to remain on the team after what originally transpired is unbelievable to me.
  • indyd
At least he has good taste in posters.....
  • I responded to bahickma below, but feel I also need to state that I agree with you as well:)
  • Kelin Blab
I double dog dare brucey to keep this kid on the team and then show up to assembly hall this winter.....I DARE HIM.
  • hoosier07
HAHA great pic! Maybe if they kick him off the team we'll actually be better than the Illini again in the big ten!! Wishful thinking though ...
