Oladipo, Wade, Zeller, others to work out in Bloomington

With three lottery picks in the last two years, Indiana has established itself as one of the top programs in terms of developing NBA talent in recent seasons.

And now some of that talent is returning to Bloomington to work out this week, sources tell Inside the Hall.

Former Indiana All-Americans Cody Zeller and Victor Oladipo, who will appear Wednesday evening at IU’s “on the road” tour stop at Lucas Oil Stadium, are expected to workout in IU’s facilities this week.

In addition to Oladipo and Zeller, five members of the Miami Heat will also workout in Bloomington: Dwyane Wade, a former player for Tom Crean at Marquette, Mario Chalmers, Norris Cole, Udonis Haslem and Josh McRoberts.

It’s not the first time that Wade, a future Hall of Famer and three-time NBA champion, has come to Bloomington.

Back in the spring of 2012, Wade traveled from Indianapolis to Bloomington during an off day of the NBA eastern conference semifinals to spend time with Crean and then erupted for 30 points, nine rebounds and six assists the next day to push Miami past the Pacers, 101-93.

Current IU players are not participating in the workouts.

Update: Wade posted the following on his Instagram account on Tuesday evening:

  • FinEndNow

    This is pretty cool.

  • Michael

    Typo. “Some to Bloomington”

  • mckillio

Are the IU players allowed to participate? And if so, why aren’t they? Seems like a great opportunity for them.

  • Hoosier Hall

Who will they be working out with? I mean, who is the coordinator here, Crean? Je’Ney Jackson? Or are they bringing their own guy and using our facilities?

  • Brad

I don’t think they’re allowed to because of some NCAA rule.It probably violates their amateur status or something.

  • FinEndNow

Probably just being cautious with the NCAA. We know how dumb they can be.

  • FinEndNow

    Probably just each other.

  • Hardwood83

Take LOTS of pics for recruits benefit. I don’t like DWade or the Heat D-bags, but milk it while you can!

  • The_Real_Assembly_Hall

When you get to their level then supervision is almost a non requirement for off season workouts. They can handle their business.

  • Hoosier Hall

Yeah, they’re pros but most of those guys still have trainers and what not. I’m guessing they are just using our facilities then.

  • skotchie

Hopefully the state of Indiana requires a work visa from
McRoberts to allow him back in and the paperwork gets held up for months.

And I certainly wouldn’t allow him in Assembly Hall,
he had his chance and went elsewhere.

  • Crimson&CremeFraiche

He did play for the Pacers a couple of years ago. And would you play for Mike Davis over coach K? But I do get your point. I also hold a grudge.

  • skotchie

Grudge maybe, I don’t know but hell if I saw him in a gas
station I’d probably cup my hands around my mouth and throw him a quick
    BOOOOOOOO!

Ya I guess you could call that a grudge.

  • IUMIKE1

Heard thru a taliban source that they (ncaa) will have someone in the parking lot after they get there checking for past bumper stickers and looking at current bumper stickers and then trying to connect us to them so that they can screw us in some insane way afterwards.

  • yimyames

I’d guess Crean had a little bit to do with the visit. I’d also guess he isn’t gonna miss the opportunity to work with these guys while they are in town. At least a little bit, I would hope. Seems something can be learned here, even for a D-1 coaching staff.

  • Snookafly

I take some solace in the fact that he never did anything in college and he’ll never do much in the pros.

  • Hoosier1158

Anytime there are NBA players hanging out at IU could be a positive toward recruiting?

  • b_side

He was a starter for a playoff team and just signed a $23M contract with the Heat. I guess it’s “not much” in comparison to making the all-star team, but I’d say he’s doing just fine vs. someone like DJ White.

  • Snookafly

Oh he’s making great money, but he’ll never win a title unless it’s as a journeyman coming off the bench for another team in a few years. He was a let down at Duke, and the Heat’s chance for another championship just left town. Please stop listing being on an NBA playoff team as a real accomplishment– when over half the league gets in, it’s pretty watered down.

  • b_side

Totally agree he was a let down at Duke, but that’s not my point. We’re discussing the NBA. I think he’ll end up having a very similar career to Jared Jeffries, the consummate role player…nothing to brag about, but certainly nothing to snuff at either. The difference being Jared was a stud in college and a lottery pick while McBob was drafted with minimal expectations at #37 in the second round.

Btw, considering how infrequent someone like Mike Dunleavy has made the playoffs, I think NBA players like him would beg to differ on your viewpoint of the accomplishment. It’s not as if the Bobcats had any real history of winning. And considering how many superstars such as Barkley and Malone never won a championship, even being the 8th or 9th man on a team like the Spurs or Heat has to feel better than being on the 76ers tanking every season.

Don’t take any of these comments like I’m some kind of McRoberts apologist, but I think a certain level of context is important when assessing a player’s career. As an 8-year veteran at 27 years old whose game doesn’t rely on athleticism, I think it’s reasonable to think he’s got another 5-8 years in league (barring injury).

  • Caleb Moore

Mcroberts is fine. He’s not great and he’s not terrible. You speak of context and I agree both ways….the context of comparison to less fortunate nba careers versus the context of former Indiana hs basketball star who spurned the state school that really needed him. It is pretty interesting the divergent viewpoints but I guess we Indiana fans don’t have the rep we have for no reason. The pic is cool. Coolest part is that Vic’s name plate is still in the locker behind him. Crean so loved that kid. Cool to see dwade repping the Hoosiers. Not the first time. Really with the hair Cody and josh? COME ON MANS!!!!!
