Indiana to play in 2012 Legends Classic

  • 03/07/2012 11:18 am in

Per a release for IU Media Relations:

Georgetown, Indiana, UCLA, and Georgia will compete in the 2012 Legends Classic, which culminates with the Championship Rounds at Brooklyn’s brand new Barclays Center, Nov. 19-20. Championship Round tickets will go on sale in the near future.

The format for the 2012 Legends Classic, which has fast become one of the nation’s premier early-season college basketball tournaments, features 12 teams from across the nation competing in the fifth annual event with Georgetown, Indiana, UCLA, and Georgia hosting regional round games from Nov. 11-15. The four hosts will then advance to the Championship Rounds on Nov. 19-20 at Barclays Center, located in the heart of Brooklyn, N.Y., while the remainder of the field will participate in subregionals held at campus sites.

Match-ups for the Championship Rounds, television details, and the entire bracket for the 2012 Legends Classic will be announced at a later date.

The Barclays Center is currently under construction and will be the new home of the New Jersey (soon-to-be Brooklyn) Nets.

Going to NYC in a month. Sounds like a good reason to go back later this year as well.

  • CreamandCrimson

Georgetown figures to be a good team and will be a nice challenge if we play them.  UCLA has to be better than the mess they were this season and Georgia….well, they are good at football.  I hope the on-campus games are against pretty good mid-majors and we get to play both UCLA and Georgetown.

Good event and a good chance for exposure on the East Coast in a brand new building.  We can worry about next season’s schedule after we get done with this awesome season but I see nothing negative with playing in this event.

  • Matt Lee

Yep, you knew it wouldn’t be too long until “The Movement” started be included in these sorts of events.

    This will be great!

  • eph521

The Hoosiers are bound for Brooklyn!

Does this mean Dwight Howard is now willing to play for IU?

Ol’ Moses is going to be regretting his decision next year.

  • marcusgresham

Glad they’re in this event but I think the format is a batch of crap.  Teams can win and still not advance because they aren’t the “name” teams.

I imagine Brett Yormark had his hands in this one, thank you Brett.  He’s the Net’s/Barklays Center CEO and IU grad.  He will show our Hoosiers the red carpet and is a master marketer, we’ll probably see full sized posters of Cody and Yogi in Times Square.

  • HoosierExile

When I think Legends on the hardwood, I certainly think of Georgia…

  • Miamihoosier

I wouldn’t be surprised if we host North Carolina in the ACC/Big Ten challenge next year as well. If so, not many teams would have a better non conference schedule than a potential line up of UK, UCLA, Georgetown, UNC, and Butler.

  • b_side

Best. News. Ever.  Ok, being a Hoosier transplant in NYC has me biased a little, but I was thinking I’d have to make trips to B-Town and Penn State to see these guys in person.

Can’t wait.  Haven’t seen the Hoosiers in person since the win over Pitt in the Garden, and I know tickets in B-town are going to be a tough get next year.

  • MillaRed

Good for the RPI. Good for recruiting. Good test for The Movement.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

Plus probably ND as well.  That would be a pretty tough non-conference schedule!

But, are we getting spoiled to think that next year’s team will lose only VJ3 and TP, which are great role players, but will be replaced by Yogi, Jeremy, Hanner, Buss, and PJ???

As well as this year’s team has played at times, I can’t help but think IU could be a national contender next year if they aren’t already.

  • Glawton12

Yeah, I was confused by the format at first, but it looks like based on last year’s results that they schedule cupcake teams to ensure that the four regional hosts would be the advancing teams because of winning regardless of whether or not they de facto advanced.

  • cheeseman18

I agree, I like the exposure, but I like the format of tourneys like Maui better. This one seems pretty biased…and why is Georgia even included??

  • Miamihoosier

To me, if they can work out the fact they are over-signed by one, this is the best team in the Big Ten hands down. If everyone is utilized correctly, they will be the best team in America.

PG – Hulls, Yogi, and Abell
    SG- Oladipo, Creek, Patterson, Etherington
    SF- Watford, Sheehey, Hollowell
    PF- Elston and Perrea
    C-   Zeller and Jurkin

No one has this combination of talent and experience next year…… check that, no one is even close.      Question is though, can they play with the target on their back?  Can they play under the pressure of a #1 ranking at some point next year?   Can they win consistently on the road?   Good problems to have, but still concerning.       By mid year, I think our starters might be Yogi, Mo Creek, Oladipo, Watford, and Zeller.    All 5 have the talent to be first team all Big Ten……wow.

PS- If Burke and Hardaway Jr. come back, Michigan will definitely challenge us for the league title.        MSU, PU, ILL, OSU, WIS, PSU, and NW, ALL lose their one and only dominant player……none of them have anyone coming in to replace, Draymond Green, Hummel, Jordan Taylor, Shurna, Meyers Leonard, Tim Frazier, Sullinger, and Buford.   Iowa loses Gatens, and Minny loses Sampson, but they should still be improved. Overall, you have to like our chances to go a minimum of 14-4 in leauge, which should be enough to win it by 2+ games

It’s kinda fun to play ‘Where’s Waldo’ with past IU recruiting targets (or players). Just recently I saw John Wilkins playing for ILL State in the MVC tourney final against Creighton & have seen Nick Williams a couple times for Ole Miss. Both solid players but certainly not difference makers. Seems like there have been a couple others this season but I can’t remember who at the moment.

  • Hardwood83

UCLA is experiencing the curse of Matt Carlino. They have to sacrifice a goat at mid-court at mid-night to and chant Bill Walton’s name backwards to reverse it’s effects.

  • Oldguyy

Detroit and the plant-throwing Eli Holman made it into the tournament by beating Valpo. 🙁

  • stroot

    “Who?”

(That’s about how relevant he is now)

I would love to play UCLA if they land Shabazz Muhammad.

I believe one of his tatoos depicts the incident

HAHA!!!  I said yesterday I believe it was that I thought a couple of the other 3 seed candidates would go down early in their conference tournaments opening the door for IU to move up to a 3 if they play well.  Georgetown went down handily to PITT today so there’s one 3 seed opponent down.  I don’t know if it will end up being better for IU to be a 3 or 4 but they could definitely play themselves into a hard 3 starting tomorrow!

I’ll be there loud and raucous and rooting for the Hoosiers for at least tomorrow and hopefully all weekend!!!

    Georgetown beat PITT

  • InTheMtns

    Georgetown 64, Pitt 52, Ace.

Nic Moore also plays for Illinois State. He is from Warsaw, In and was recruited by IU

  • 323SGrant

I’d like to see IU in the Maui classic before C. Zeller leaves. Does CTC not like Hawaii?
Great competition usually in that tournament.

  • Anrhill

I think this is fantastic.  If you want to prep a team for a final four run, you need them to be battle tested a la Izzo or Coach K schedules.  As has been mentioned before, ACC, UK, Butler, plus perhaps Georgetown and UCLA, followed by a grueling Big 10 schedule?  We’ll take some lumps at times, but if that schedule doesn’t get you ready for March, nothing will.

  • anyone know what station I get a Don Fischer call on in the Chicago area? if thats possible at all. I am in school during the PSU and Wisconsin games and need a way to listen!!!!

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

Ah crap!  Thanks guys.  I read my update on my phone wrong.  DUH!

    Thanks again

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

As noted . . . not the sharpest tool in the shed am I!

Anyway, I guess we’ll just have to win the B1G tourney and in the process maybe beat up on Michigan to do so to earn a 3 seed!

Just to note this as well . . . I will be at the game tomorrow and I’m getting over pneumonia and the drugs they gave me for the cough and infection mess with my head severely and make me a bit loopy, so if someone falls out of the club level at the Fieldhouse, it could be me!

But at least I’ll be screaming without shame because I probably won’t completely know what I’m doing anyway!

  • I hear ya. I’m all drugged up right now. That’s what I get for being a teacher, I guess. The positive to having a fever made it easy to take a sick day and just watch the first round games.

  • I think Malik Story is at Nevada? Playing well too. I always liked his game.

  • WatchingYogi_atYogis

I’ve got us over Georgetown in the final.  And big.

  • The_Real_Assembly_Hall

We were there in 08. Not on the list of expected fields until atleast 2014.
