Open Thread: Predict IU’s regular season record

It seems predictions are popping up all over the place these past few weeks. The early buzz has the Hoosiers finishing anywhere from fifth to ninth in the Big Ten. And so in the spirit of all of this forecasting, we’re turning it over to you.

Your task? Predict Indiana’s final regular season record.

13 non-conference games. 18 Big Ten games. A total of 31 contests.

Your reward? $100 to spend with our friends at T.I.S. in Bloomington.

Here’s how it’ll work: This thread will remain open until the end of the month. Your guesses will then be locked in on October 1 and following the Purdue game next March, we’ll revisit the comments and pull out all of the correct guesses. Everyone that gets the regular season record correct will then be entered into a drawing for the prize.

Feel free to show your work with your prediction, but please post it as the first part of your comment. It makes for easier record keeping. Also, one entry per person, please.

I love my hoosiers but until I see zeller can bang it out in the Big Ten, I can’t put this team any better than this.  If Coach Crean doesn’t play Verdell as the primary point, I can see this team going  19-12, but CTC seems to have an odd fascination with playing a point guard who turns the ball over especially in the most clutch situations

Although Sheeladipo is catchy, they are two different players…

I think VO will have the biggest improvement/leap from frosh to soph, with improved shooting and finishing at the rim.

Will should see strides in his game as he benefited from the Indy pro am as well as VO. I believe if Will cain gain more weight before the season, he could be a valuable 3/4 playing back-up for Watford, allowing Elston to back-up TP, making our front court deeper.

    Overall, I am seeing a 21-10 season…there’s hope…

Why are we getting no love on here against UK, ND and Butler? Some of the few that have us winning these games call them upsets. I understand Butler’s recent success, but this is a new season and our talent level/experience exceeds theirs. We are 4yrs in now, if we lose 2 of these 3 I will consider myself disabpointed.

10-3 Non Conf and 10-8 Big Ten for a 20 win season and NCAA berth. I think the Hoosiers really step up this year. Make daddy proud! IU is going to play well at home, and that alone gives me reason to believe a winning record in a down Big Ten is highly possible. The non conference schedule is pretty weak, so even losses at NC State, to Kentucky (hopefully not), and Notre Dame or Butler aren’t backbreakers. But it would be nice to pick up a marquee non conference win for the committee. I know my head’s in the clouds, but screw it, let’s be positive!

19-12 overall, 9-9 in Big Ten, beating Butler, @ Evans, and @ NC St. and losing to UK and Notre Dame out of conference.

In Big Ten play, pretty predictable till they lose road games @ Iowa and @ Minnesota, only to get themselves back into the tourney “bubble” discussion with big wins the last 2 games against MSU and Purdue.

Surprising wins and losses will not, um, surprise me at all this year. Should be a fun ride.

22 W & 9 L.  If Creek is really 100%.   We have too many options on the floor with more experience and everyone is healthy.  Add the fact that the B1G is down I think this is the high side.

I agree about ND and Butler. However… on paper… there is only a slim chance for victory against Kentucky. This will be their best team on the floor in the last decade… at least. Trust me, I am not a troll. I hate Kentucky just as much as the next guy, but they are going to be really, really, really good this year.

    18-13 overall record
    Non-Conference:10-3

Not sure where this record will land them but this year should definitely be a NIT year if not NCAA.

17-14, because I think 2 non-con losses are likely, and going .333 in the B1G isn’t out of the question.

    19-12
         (10-3 Non Conf)
         (9-9 B1G)

  • InTheMtns

Jerry, we have 9 home games in the B10. Lose 1 home game to OSU, win 2 road games at Neb and PSU, but isn’t that 10 and not 11?

  • InTheMtns

    19 – 12.

I’ve been back and forth between 16 wins to 21 wins. Either, and all in between, seem possible. I have us winning the pUK game, but I may be blinded by my desire to beat them.

    21 wins – 10 losses (11-7) in BigTen conference play.  Can’t wait until 2012.

    20-11 overall
    11-2 non-conference
    9-9 B1G

YES I am going with 20 wins, I am an optimist!!

    Breakdown Non-conference:
I believe we take care of the 8 cupcakes this year.  The beginning of the season is critical for us with games at Btown against Butler and then going on the road to N.C. State.  This should give confidence to the team and show they can win against decent opponents (not cupcakes like last season).  Although we play pUKe at home this year it will be a tough game to win with them being loaded again (both the college team and all the money in the player’s pockets).  The game against ND could be very interesting and tell us how this team will handle adversity.  It will be interesting to see how the team bounces back against the lost to pUKe.  If they come back and beat ND I think that gives the team a lot of momentum going into the B1G season.  Last year we had two terrible losing streaks that seemed to snowball.

    Breakdown Conference:
The B1G season will determine if we are able to make the Big Dance.  Last season a 9-9 conference record tied you for 4th place in the league.  I think we can manage a 9-9 record this season.

    Wins:
    vs. Michigan
    @ Penn. State
    vs. Minnesota
    @  Nebraska
    vs. Penn. State
    vs. Iowa
    vs. Illinois
    vs. Northwestern
and then 1 of the last 3 games, hopefully PUke

I think we win 1-2 games in the B1G tournament and will get an NCAA birth as a 8-9 seed.

Here is to hoping everyone stays healthy this year and we play some team ball.
    GO HOOSIERS!!!

In today’s (9.22) presser, Christian Watford said not making the NCAA Tournament this year would be considered a failure. (#iubb)  The players, anyway, are thinking of big improvement!

    Go IU!

  • LTTelamon

    18-13.

The consistency will be much better than it’s been in years past, but the team is still thin in the front court, especially if CZ gets into foul trouble. At times that will be exploited. I expect there to be a couple big wins in there.
