Around the Hall: Butler at IU date, Garrett Green, more

by in Media | August 2nd, 2011

Around the Hall is recommended reading from the Inside the Hall crew. So go ahead, get your read on.

+ CBS Sports national college basketball writer Jeff Goodman delivers an offseason Big Ten report and drops a date for Indiana’s meeting with Butler next season at Assembly Hall: Sunday, November 27.

+ Garrett Green talked about his visit to San Diego State with Aztec Sports Report (premium link). Green is expected to announce a decision on Friday when he graduates from LSU. The 6-foot-11 center left California this morning per his Twitter account.

+ Northwestern is considering four new designs for the court in Welsh-Ryan Arena, including a nearly all-purple look.

+ Purdue coach Matt Painter cut six players from the USA World University Games roster. Only Michigan State’s Draymond Green and Minnesota’s Trevor Mbakwe remain from the Big Ten.

+ Purdue is in the running for Oak Hill Academy center A.J. Hammons according to Kyle Neddenriep of The Indianapolis Star.

+ Michigan announced its non-conference schedule for next season. The Wolverines also picked up commitments from Zak Irvin and Derrick Walton in recent days.

+ An anonymous head coach, “Coach X,” tells ESPN Insider that only having July for evaluating prospects “has really hamstrung college coaches.”

+ Former Arkansas sharpshooter Rotnei Clarke will transfer to Butler and will be eligible for the 2012-2013 season.

Rot is a huge “get” for Butler.  He will flourish under thier system and put up all sorts of points.

    Come on, Garrett!!!!!  Go IU!!!!!

Garret Green has a huge upside for the Hoosiers should he bring his talents to Bloomington.  Aside from the depth alone he provides, he logged solid minutes at LSU, has played in a power conference and hostlie environments, but I think his most important asset may be forcing Cody Zeller to practice against him.

a 6’11 guy will make people change their shot and having CZ, Watford and (I guess) Pritchard should provide a valuable experience day in and day out for the front court practicing against another big body.

  • Bleeding Crimson

    Chi,
I totally agree but if he commits not only does he give CZ great practice time but will put CZ at the 4 spot where we need him.  We will own the boards and post.

Chi and Bleeding – I completely agree with both of you.  Very rarely do transfer situations work out his well.  Hopefully he feels the same way.

Oh Northwestern, do you really need to go the route of Boise State?  Seems a bit of a stretch for a proud, academic school to go “gimmicky” to get students to come there, even student-athletes.  Seems like everyone is trying this ridiculous floor/field thing these days.  Let’s hope IU never has to do that….

If i recall correctly, CTC promised cody he’d be playing the 4 and wouldn’t be our Center. That was a huge deal to CZ before he committed. So, i can’t imagine that’s gonna change…or we lose Zeller next year. Anyone want that? Didn’t think so.

Cody has played center throughout his entire career.

  • Casey B.

Apparently, gimmicky is their new M.O. Check out the “PersaStrong” campaign.

  • Plane1972

Yeah, I don’t believe we were privy to the promises CTC made to CZ during his recruitment. This “promise” is likely a recollection of another thread. I believe CZ will play most of his time at the 4, but there will be some 5 mixed in there, too, imo.

  • Casey B.

Seconded. Frankly don’t understand why IU fans feel the need to support Butler as if they’re our little brother.

Fact is, they’re another team in the state who we play against and compete with for recruits. No different than Purdue, Notre Dame, etc.

    I don’t like Buter.

  • Anonymous

I third that one! No allegiance to Butler. They’re not as cute as they once were :)

  • MillaRed

Things have really quieted down on the recruiting front. Which is expected with so many slots filled. Now we are crossing our fingers.

Gary Harris – I think our class is just too full (see Zak Irvin) Really hope I am wrong.

Garrett Green – Too good to be true. I really think it would elevate this team. For some reason SDSU seems more likely. Really hope I am wrong.

On the other hand, I refuse to underestimate the Remy Abell signing. He fell into our laps and will be good.

Also think we are about to land another 4-star in the next month. Hope its Demetrius Jackson.

Lastly, I believe the vast talent is scaring many away. Just aren’t brave enough to compete with the studs we have coming in. To each his own.

    Lots of hoping going on……

Green is a California wussy if he doesn’t play at IU this season. If he chooses IU then he’s not a wussy, he’s a banger that wants to compete. It takes a tough kid who wants to compete and he’d really have to be tough to come in here for just a year and compete with our bigs for playing time. Love to see Green, Pritchard,Elston and Cody play Hard 21. lol.

Here’s Green comparing SDSU to Indiana..

    I like our chances.

“It’s two different atmospheres,” Green said. “Indiana is a rich
basketball tradition, so when you go down to Indiana, people already
knew who I was. It’s all basketball. Here, it’s a little different.
They’ve got the beach life. Still, they just came off a really good year
and they’re trying to build off of it. And they’ve got an extremely
good coaching staff. You can’t beat coach Fisher, he’s been around a
long time. He’s a great coach.”

I love what Butler has done also but that Championship game wow!! I would have rather watched Bird againist Magic even at their advanced ages.

  • N71

mmm…I don’t see a lean either way.  He clearly recognizes Indiana’s basketball bend but puts just as much or more emphasis on the SDSU coaching staff, team mates, beach sceen, and campus.  Seems like 60% SDSU, 40% IU based on the comments alone.

Just watched the new link for Mitch McGary up in the Twitter links.  I’ve been skeptical before, but I’m not anymore.  It isn’t that he is a really skilled big man, or that he’s really athletic (because he isn’t overwhelming in that department, but very good).  It’s that he plays with joy.  He plays like he loves what he is doing.  He plays like he’d rather be doing that than anything else in the world, and oh Lord how we need players like that.  We need players who want to run and have fun and just beat the hell out of people.  Please, Coach, get that kid in candy stripes.

Whether or not cream pomised doesn’t matter – zeller isn’t a natural five. His height will allow him to match up defensively with college center, but his outside skill and offensive game will ultimately define his career as a four.

How can I not like Butler?

    - I didn’t go there
    - I have no emotional attachment to the school
    - They’re a team in Indiana that isn’t IU
    - Their fans have a newly adopted self-righteousness
    - They breeze their way through an inferior conference and are less worn down at the end of the season because of it, often using that to their advantage to beat teams that had to fight their way through grueling conferences

I don’t understand the “they’ve been such a fantastic story” argument. The New Orleans Saints were a great story when they beat the Colts in the Super Bowl – doesn’t mean I have to like them.

I’m not contesting that there’s room for more than one Indiana program to thrive. I frankly don’t think that’s in question. I’m simply saying that just because a team plays hard and are from Indiana, it doesn’t mean we have to like them. Hell, if we go by that logic, we should all be Purdue fans, too.

Purdue isnt a good story.  Butler is.  And Im not a hater.

Let me just say that I disagree with pretty much every point you made, and that we just look at the Butler situation very differently.

We haven’t offered Jackson yet, so I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one.

So that makes it okay for CTC to go back on his word with Cody? What kind of message does that send other players, recruits and fans?

  • Anonymous

Then we have a fundamental disagreement. I believe promises DO matter. But I agree with you that Cody’s height and his game beyond the paint will be a problem for a lot of our opponents.

Ha – fair enough. I guess I’d just rather have another in-state rival than a backup team for when IU is struggling.

I never bought the argument that we should support a team simply because they’re from Indiana. That concept certainly doesn’t transcend any other sport. Generally sharing similar territory is recipe for a rivalry.

Butler are unequivocally a great story. But great stories happen all the time in sports – doesn’t mean we have to love the team behind them.

    Agree to disagree, though.

  • Casey B.

    Oh, and also…

Butler fans certainly don’t unite in reciprocating the love the team receives from IU fans. From my interaction, they tend to pride themselves on supposedly replacing IU as the top program in the state.

We view them as the little engine that could. They view us as a program that unjustly overshadows them still in this state.

I love Oregon’s court.  Check out Towson’s—it has tiger stripes (but it’s more subtle than the fir trees.)

I hope he comes too, but I don’t know that I’d label him a wussy if he chooses to go to San Diego St.  He’s obviously damn smart or he wouldn’t have graduated in three years.  He’s unlikely to have a pro career ahead of him from the looks of his stats, so he’s trying to find the best fit to prepare him for the rest of his life.  Do I think SDSU’s academic programs match IU’s?  Doubtful, but he’s also a California kid and honestly the San Diego climate in February is probably a lot more enticing than Bloomington in February.

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

For your points about Gary and Garrett — I haven’t hoped you were this wrong since the MillaNun debacle (although I actually share with your sentiment).

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

He didn’t graduate in three years. He’s been at LSU four years, but only played three.

  • Anonymous

Having spent a lot of time on Butler’s campus over the past several years with girls I’ve “made friends with”, there are a lot of IU fans among the students.

Most of the in-state kids seem to like IU.  Most of the out-of-state kids don’t seem to care.  Either way, none of them grew up rooting for Butler.

Most of the fans didn’t go to Butler; there aren’t enough living alums to solely account for the new fanbase.  I think the anti-IU fans are really just anti-Big Ten.  Butler’s just an excuse for a few loudmouths to hope on a bandwagon and knock other in-state schools.
