Q & A: 2012 Lawrence Central wing Jeremy Hollowell

by in Recruiting | September 19th, 2010

2012 Lawrence Central wing Jeremy Hollowell is among the top players nationally in his class and visited IU on Saturday to meet with the IU coaching staff and academic advisors from the university at Cook Hall.

He’ll also make a return trip in two weeks for the IU-Michigan football game. Inside the Hall caught up with Hollowell on Sunday evening to get an update on his visit, his recent ankle injury and his recruitment:

On the trip to Bloomington:

“It was real good. We came down and talked with the coaches and the academic people in the office all day. My mom was asking questions about the academics and other stuff. Her and my brother (James) talked and he gave her some questions to ask and things like that since he’s already been through it.”

On who he met with during the visit:

“All of the coaches – Coach Crean, Seltzer, McClain and Buckley. They were all in there.”

On his trip to Ohio State the previous weekend:

“I went down for the Miami (FL) football game. I was supposed to play in open gym, but I was still hurt. So I just went down and watched open gym, hung out with the players and the coaches, went to the football game.”

On whether IU and Ohio State are still his top schools and if he’s still open to other schools:

“They’re not my final two, they’re just two schools I like. They’re not the only two I’m picking from. I’m still open to all schools.”

On the schools that have visited him at Lawrence Central in recent weeks:

“The first day Ohio State and Vanderbilt were there. Iowa came one day, Illinois came. I think that’s about it.”

On his injury and a timetable for returning to the court:

“It was a high ankle sprain and I was on crutches. It isn’t too bad anymore, I can walk and lift, things like that, I just can’t get back to running and cutting so fast. I’m just giving it time out and making sure it doesn’t keep bothering me during the season.”

On what he learned on this trip to Bloomington that he didn’t know before:

“Just how important the academics are and how they have everything setup and organized for your future outside of basketball. That’s really important. I think my mom really liked that.”

On Ron Patterson and Peter Jurkin committing to IU and potentially playing with both guys at Indiana:

“They’re definitely two guys that can help start the class off. I think that class is a real important class at IU. I think that will be the year that it really turns around. I think playing with those two could really be a good thing.”

On the coaching staff stressing the importance of the 2012 class:

“He (Coach Crean) tells me that all the time. He said it will be the number one recruiting class that year, hopefully. I don’t see why it shouldn’t be if that’s the school certain guys go to. I think the 2012 class will be the year.”

He may say he’s open to all schools, but I’ve got to believe it’s going to be either OSU or IU. Who knows who he will choose from there though.

Here is a great move that could have a “butterfly like effect” on Jeremy eventually going to IU in 2012. Although I really liked Sam Thompson for IU…that guys a real talent.NBA potential there

……”Please Kentucky, Duke, UNC…..” All these kids want the love, and who can blame them. They are 16 and living larger than life

  • Diesel

Pretty impressive that they meet with the academic staff. I wonder if every school does that. I’m sure Denim Shirt made sure it was a priority. Tom Crean is not messing around. To echo Jim Morris from the Pacers, “We will not have bums anymore”

  • Diesel

He must have heard that CZ was a lock for IU (internet rumor here we go!)

  • marsh21

Come on Jeremy and make the 2012 class #1!

Denim shirt had each recruit meet with local Sprint, Nextel, and AT&T people.

With Young to AR and Goff to OK I sure hope Guy can help us because IU sure is losing a lot of good players that they need and one of the scholarships went to Guy that could have been saved. Again, I hope he can really help this year.

  • Yogi Kelin Zeller

Jeremy….dude….I know you are open to ‘other’ schools, but we both know, it is all about IU and OSU. Sure their are other girls in the class, but the two chicks that like you are really hot. Yes Vandy, Iowa, and Illannoy have come to visit, if he chooses anyone of those I will ban myself from ITH for an entire 24hours!

I wanted to have him as our backup plan to CZ, but I’m glad Crean’s focus for the 2011 class will be on Cody now (although I suspect Crean will find a new backup plan).

Sam Thompson to OSU actually seems like a good thing for IU – they play the same spot..in the same recruiting class..sure there are injuries and other reasons for DQ (mostly at Crimetucky..not OSU) but Hollowell is an Indiana kid who knows how his coming to IU could be the tipping point for IU in the Final Four.

  • millzy32

    You said it “It’s INDIANA”

He may get all excited going to an OSU football game and seeing 105,000 fans and all but he needs to realize that’s football and he doesn’t play football. All those fans only support their football program and only care about football. Basketball at OSU is a complete afterthought.

Do the smart Basketball move Hollowell and get with INDIANA.

  • GFDave

A kid named Sam Thompson, a 6′ 7″ player from Chicago has committed to O$U. One wonders what effect that might have on young Mr. Hollowell’s thought processes.

  • stonaroni

It is a good thing for IU. So many of these 2012 recruits have to see where the 2011 guys are going. Like I have said before, top 100 prospects expect to get some playing time as a freshman and better be starting by the next year. That is hard to do with a loaded class in front of you and prospects that play your position.

But, Hollowell grew up in Ohio and is a huge OSU fan. So, I think the jury is still out on him.

The good thing for JH at IU is that he doesnt have a true #3 in the two classes in front of him. AE is probably the closest thing, but if you read into the interviews with AE, CTC wants him to be a guard.

  • stonaroni

Wouldn’t that be great to see Sampson as the Verizon Wireless guy, “Can you hear me now?”

  • Hoosier95

I live in Columbus and I can tell you they don’t care about OSU basketball here. Last year when we were selling games out at IU with 10 wins, they had not 1 sellout the whole year and had the NCAA player of the year on their team!!

I have a feeling Matta has moved on from Jeremy with this signing. It would not make sense to sign another player who is the same type of player. Could be a good sign for IU.

  • http://www.vccm.net/ iubase

The Thompson case brings home another point. CTC is also recruiting Perea and these two play similar positions and certainly bring athleticism to the team. I think HP may be a higher priority but would ask others what they think. Should we try and sign both? If one signs will it hurt our ability to recruit the other? Who would be the highest target? Or do we through it out to both and hope to get either one? My response is we should target both but if we sign HP or JH first it will hurt the recruitment of the other and obviously I would love to have both..

  • Baseball Montgomery Buc

    Whoa! Jeremy Hollowell tweet:

I wanna move out of state! This is the basketball ball state tho that’s the only thing.

  • Yogi Kelin Zeller

Hanner is more of a 4 than a 3, so their recruiting won’t affect each other that much at all. Jeremy can also play some 2, so I think IU would be ok if they landed both.

  • Yogi Kelin Zeller

When I read this I got immediatly irritated. The twitter and facebook games are a big turnoff to me, and I commend the zellers of the world even more now.

  • MillaRed

I’m not feeling too good on Hollowell coming to IU. Not sure why. Thinking he is looking for another fit.

Too bad on Goff. An instant upgrade in the paint. Might have shook up the lineup.

It was really nice to get those 3 committments in a short span. Looks like it’s time to chill again and wait patiently for the next one to happen. Very proud of CTC and his recent accomplishments. The future is looking brighter and brighter every day.

  • Baseball Montgomery Buc

Yeah I agree, and even though it is on twitter, it’s puts the thought in the back of your mind that if he ends up coming to IU, then he won’t be happy. I’d rather him save us the trouble if he doesn’t want to come here and go somewhere else. Now if he truly wants to come then thats a different story.

  • Anonymous

i wouldn’t read too much into it. who knows what triggered him to say that, maybe a personal fight or incident? or maybe this is in IU’s favor. he recognizes what IU is, and friends that want him to join him out of state, he’s saying…yea i’d like to go but….it’s indiana

  • N71

That’s VERY odd. He was just down at IU this weekend and indicated the visit went well. I think the only thing that could possibly be a hurdle are his grades, I say that having NO idea what kind of student he is. Perhaps he’s really wanting to go to IU and got some frustrating news on the grades requirements and is just blurting out in anger. Maybe someone tweeted on his behalf…I don’t know but it doesn’t add up. I’ll give him a break until we learn more. Purely on his tallent he’d be a great get, a George Gervin, Jay Edwards, silky smooth player that has a very high up side.

  • stonaroni

I tend to agree with you. For one, he doesn’t seem that excited about IU in his interview. For two, he is an Ohio kid.

I think he has talent, but his motor and effort have already been questioned. He is young and that can turn around. However, there are 3 kids that can play the #3 (SF) at IU if need be in the classes of 2010 and 2011, WS, VO, and AE. If you notice, their motors or work ethic have not been questioned ever. They are all high character and academic recruits as well. Call me crazy, but I would rather have guys on the team like VJIII #137 out of high school, AE #98, WS and VO #143 and #144 among others on the current IU roster who bring it at practice every day than a Top 50 player who brings it one day and just shows up the next.

When you are a top 100 recruit and under the microscope all summer, the coaches get a good feel for you as a player. If you have a reputation for being lazy or not giving 100% effort, than there is a reason for it.

  • MillaRed

Not sure whether JH even knows who VO is, but something tells me it’s going
to be very, very difficult to keep him off the floor. VO logs in at #144
correct? Then why in the heck is this the list of schools that offered him a
    scholly?

IU, Clemson, George Mason, James Madison, Marquette, Maryland, UMASS,
Mizzou, Notre Dame, Pitt, Providence, V Tech, Xavier.

Florida State, NC State and Virginia were in there but gave up early.

Uhhhh yea, something tells me the kid has some game.

  • WALT

Kentucky might have what he is looking for. Have they offered anything? I mean incentives to come there? I do not know if I would believe anything verbally at this time. Am sure CTC is doing his best. If he really does not believe in us..SET HIM FREE..IF HE RETURNS YOU WILL KNOW IT WAS TRUE LOVE of the candy stripes.. It sounds like he would like to have a lot of offers to choose from.. Not a good feeling

  • kentuckyhoosier

ALEX : Is there any info on how coachs in home visit went last week at the Zeller home , or any other visits ?????

  • Anonymous

I’m with you MillaRed. I expect big things from VO.

  • millzy32

If he wants to move out of state I would think he’d want to go somewhere a lot further away than Ohio like maybe North Carolina or Florida or somewhere warm. Ohio is the same thing as Indiana except instead of liking basketball the people like football. Makes no sense for him to want to get away in Ohio.

I just don’t get the impression that this kid is going to IU. Kinda feels like a Jeremiah Davis vibe with him.

  • hoostheman

I read that after the home visits by the three finalists, there was some speculation that IU may now be out in front. That came from a Hoos site with Hoos-centric sources, but good to hear nonetheless.

  • Gustin

This two time IU alum has lived and worked at the University of Illinois for the past 17 years. My wife, two daughters and I really dislike living in Champaign county. Nothing to see here but corn and soy bean fields. My wife and daughter actually cried when they arrived in central Illinois after moving from VA. We spend the 80s in Bloomington and early 90s in Blacksburg, VA. Beautiful campuses and cities. The people here in Champaign are not very friendly, and they really dislike Hoosiers. Furthermore, the scenery both on and off-campus is much nicer at IU then it is at the U or I. When I retire in three years, we are moving out of the area ASAP.

  • Anonymous

Saw that one this afternoon too. I’m guessing just that teenage moment of wanting space from mom and dad and not really dead set on moving to far from home. What it boils down to is you can be a part of one of the greatest turnarounds in NCAA history or move out of state. Not really a tough choice when you think about it. Either your heart lies with Indiana or it does not. I prefer a player who loves IU, like AE who may be ranked around 100 over someone who is ranked #20 and has no passion for what we stand for. I think he will sort it out because that “only thing” is the biggest thing when it comes to choosing a great college.

  • Outoftheloop

No need to panic. Goff was a back-up Plan B if Zeller does not pick IU. Young is a “maybe” academic qualifier at IU. Apparently Arkansas has really low standards, but the NCAA still must sign off on the academics (however, they signed off on Bledsole at KY on made up records). Indiana needs Zeller, Yogi and Hanner Perea. Then we can be VERY selective on the last scholarship.

  • stonaroni

The more I see of VO, the more I like. His shooting touch looks stronger than what I initially believed, but I think this kid is a game changer. He is electric and has explosive quickness and hops. You put VO defensively on point guards and I am guessing the point guard will feel like he has sandpaper in his jock strap.

And, judging by the way VO was breezing through the fitness drills in last week’s video in comparison to Hulls, Rivers, and some other guards, VO will have to net some playing time to help control the ball, fast breaks and overall tempo.

  • oldred1976

I’m getting the same feeling about JH. As things have evolved in his recruitment he seems to be keeping IU in the mix but not saying much to give a good read. Except for the recent I’m open to other schools comment, its like IU is the date he knows he can get at the last moment if he’s out of options kinda sounds like JD and you saw how that worked out. If he doesn’t want to play for IU fine .I just hope for the kid’s sake someone with experience and a level head has his ear. It’s simple we want kids that want to be here

  • Outoftheloop

You live in dream land. Top 30 recruits ALL expect to start RIGHT NOW! And every recruit ranked by anyone as a top 60 KNOWS that he is a top 30! They certainly do NOT want a really similar guy recruited in their class with them. That is why a class in 2012 of Jurkin, Perea, Patterson, and Yogi is so great-they are each VERY different types of players. They make a complimentary group. Then you add one more-Holloway, DSR, Harris or another. But first we need Perea and Yogi.

  • WALT

I think that an awfully lot of the Indiana players act like prima donnas..thats all i have to say about that…Just wish a few more had some Damon Baileyesq. in them. Do not know if I can go off subject, but was just reading about Coach Knights’ roast. I adored that guy in the 70s and 80s. Didn’t care about the thrown chair. Didn’t care a heck of a lot about all the one and dones in tournament play in 90s. Doesn’t he realize he is slapping all of us hoosiers in the face by his stupid little boy attitude. The people who upset him are gone. There is just US left. They will not give a darn for him at Texas Tech. As far as those that once adored him, I for one am getting a little tired of his shunning us. Don’t know if that can be posted but will try.

  • millzy32

Good Lord what a bad place for your type to move to the next line. When you put out in front all I saw for a split second was out and then my eyes luckily kept reading and saw in front following it. I was like what? Oh wait, that’s cool.

  • Yogi Kelin Zeller

I agree with you on both counts. I like JH interest and he is a talented talented player but I don’t know if he will end up like J.Davis. It is still early but with the new signing at OSU, they very well may have moved on, similar to what MSU did with J.Davis. You snooze you lose……

I think VO is going to make it very hard to keep him off the floor and I am becoming equally excited about Will Sheehey. Waiting for the azur sheehey highlight mix.

Anybody have some insight on who CTC is recruiting in Detroit today? Dorsey- Walker visit maybe?

  • Anonymous

He had another odd tweet last week, along the lines of “I need to rethink this whole recruiting thing,” whatever that means. I wouldn’t read too much into it. For all we know, someone else had his phone and tweeted it as a joke. Also, for all the tantalizing things recruits have said about IU (see, e.g., BJ Young), maybe it’s a good sign.
