Big Ten Tournament: Indiana Hoosiers v Penn State Nittany LionsIndiana sophomore guard Verdell Jones was named honorable mention All-Big Ten and freshman forward Christian Watford was named to the conference’s All-Freshman team, the Big Ten announced Monday.

Jones finished the regular season with averages of 14.8 ppg, 3.9 rpg and 3.3 apg.

Watford posted 12.1 ppg, 6.0 rpg and hit nearly 80 percent of his free throw attempts.

A couple of other notable award recipients:

+ Ohio State’s Evan Turner was named Player of the Year by both the media and coaches.

+ Purdue’s Matt Painter was the choice as Coach of the Year by his peers, while Ohio State’s Thad Matta got the nod from the media. No offense to Matta, but I’m not sure how anyone could not vote for Painter.

+ Illinois guard D.J. Richardson was Freshman of the Year on the coaches balloting, while Northwestern guard Drew Crawford took the honor from the media.

You can access the complete All-Big Ten teams here.

No offense to Painter or Matta, but compare the talent, expectations & injury situation for Purdue, Ohio State & Wisconsin adn it should be obvious that Bo Ryan is the coach of the year. Leuer, the lone Badger big, until Nankivil (sp?) emerged, missed half of the Big Ten games, the Wisconsin was supposed to be a 2nd division team & an overall limited team physically. No contest in my mind.

Watford had better numbers than those two. As far as freshman team goes, Hulls smashed Kelsey Barlow's numbers( What the hell is going on with the people these days? A conspiracy against IU?

Congrats to you both VJIII and Christian Watford . Thanks to you both . Lets see if you can work together in that weight room ( LOL ) . Seriously thanks for the hard work , Watford must of felt alone in the post at times . And I can see Jones emerging as the leader of this team .

    6.4 1.5 .404 2.1 0 0.6 These are Hulls numbers

    3.5 1.8 .000 2.2 0.2 0.5 These are Barlow's numbers

Actually these numbers are close until you look at the three point percentage. When you also take in to consideration that Hulls was a much bigger factor for his team than Barlow was to his, but oh well, what can you do??? I do think Jordan got snubbed just a bit, he really started to come on as the leader and voice of the team, just hate not to see him rewarded or recognized for his hard work. Not to take anything away from Barlow, congrats…… but what the he!!.

In terms of points per 40 minutes, Hulls has more. In terms of ppg, Hulls has more. A/T ratio, Hulls is better. As far as the key numbers at each position, Hulls is better. Look at the bottom of the page of the link I posted and it shows everything on a graph. The red dominates the gold.

To me this is just like last season with VJ III. Watford has the numbers to be freshman of the year, but he was on a losing team. I think that's what it boiled down to for the voting.

Regardless, congratulations to both VJ III and Christian Watford for earning those honors.

This is absolutely complete B.S. Watford was the best freshman period. He had to play out of position at the 4 exerting all his energy on defense while guarding the power fowards of the big 10

Not bad for a couple of young pups, watch out next year as the team matures!!! Good job, VJ & CWatford! I would give honorable mention to Hulls too.

On a related note, will Mo Creek be eligible for Freshman of the Year next season? I think he was the best freshman in the conference this season when he was able to play.

  • No, he'll be a sophomore next season because he appeared in 12 games.

This kid is very active and should be a big plus over his career. Let's hope that if he doesn't play much next year its because we're doing well with the sophs. If he does play, let's hope its because he's really, really good.
