Voting now open for Indiana student section

You’re probably familiar with this post from a couple of weeks ago where we passed along word that IU was seeking recommendations to name the student section. A considerable amount of discourse ensued in the comments, so it’s only appropriate that we pass along that the nominees have been selected and the voting process is underway. Here are the details:

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - IU Athletics is now in the second phase of the design contest for the official 2009 Basketball Student Section t-shirt, as fans can now cast their online vote for the winning name that will go on the t-shirt. The names that you can choose from are:

  • Creaniacs
  • Crean Machine
  • Crimson Guard
  • Crean’s Crew
  • Candy Stripers
  • The Hall Monitors
  • Crean’s Army
  • Crean Nation
  • Branch’s Bleachers
  • McCracken Maniacs

Admittedly, I’m not particularly thrilled with any of these names, but if I voted (which I won’t), I’d go with The Hall Monitors or Candy Stripers. As well as the Izzone has worked out at Michigan State, I’m not sure it’s a great idea to name the student section after any coach. For instance, what if IU had named the student section after Kelvin Sampson? Of course there are no parallels between Tom Crean and Sampson and I’m sure it would work fine, but it wouldn’t be my first choice. (Of the Crean names, Creaniacs is the best. By a landslide.)

Crimson Guard should be thrown out because, well, it’s um, not creative or catchy. And if you’re going to name the student section, which I’m not sure is completely necessary, you might as well attempt to do it right. I know Indiana’s court is named after Branch McCracken, but would using his name resonate with anybody that’s not super familiar with IU hoops? You could probably do a poll of students in the lobby at Assembly Hall and a fair percentage would not be able to tell you who McCracken was.

That leaves us with The Hall Monitors and Candy Stripers. This is the point where I would flip a coin and … tails it is. Okay, The Hall Monitors it is.

I am not a student, but an alumni. And also a native of Bloomington. Therefore, my suggestions is THE QUARRY. Jean Cunningham

    How about “Creanatorium”?

  • timmayat

I love the Hall Monitors if nothing else for all the creativity it would allow for the student section. Bloomington/IU, if anything like it was when I was there, is known for its creative arts programs. In addition, basketball in Bloomington brings all kinds of people together. I would love to see the student body get crazy with a theme like The Hall Monitors.

  • psvirsky

Hall Monitors? Really guys? That's just too dorky

I agree that it shouldn't be tied to a coach, that's for sure. My preference is for the Candy Stripers. It's iconic and strictly tied to IU basketball and IU alone. Other teams play in a hall of sorts. No one else (to my knowledge) has candy striped pants. I don't love the name but it makes sense and I think it would grow on us.

All the options STINK! How about The KNIGHTMARE – as the hordes of students will haunt you. The options presented are terrible!

CRIMSON GUARD – classy, sophisticated, AND cool

Good call, Jean. It goes with the football slogan “Defending the Rock” as well.

I don't really like any of the names all that much, but I do agree to stay away from naming after the coach. We are for our progam number 1. I like the assemblyholics the best….would have to go with the candy stripers i guess.

  • peaychris

    i prefer the “red sea”

  • jfear

    the hall monitors

  • Bryan

Come on Alex, don't you realize that it's highly distinguished to name your school's student section after fictional bad guys from an 80's weekday afternoon cartoon show (Crimson Guard). Especially if said fictional organization is headed by a pair of metrosexual (at best) twins? When you get that opportunity, you run with it.

I guess, of the entries listed, I'd probably go with the Hall Monitors.

  • Disco_Briscoe

They are all terrible…I think “The Student Section at Assembly Hall” is better.

  • atuholski

    THE CREANHOUSE EFFECT.

  • HoosierSmitty

While I'm partial to the Crimson Guard, and not crazy about any of them, I have to agree with Alex. I think either the Hall Monitors or Candy Stripers are just cheesy enough to be funny and make for some interesting student section attire.

I 100% agree that it shouldn't be named for the coach. Also, couldn't the name theoretically apply to other sporting events in the hall? Creaniacs is pretty cool, but the student section should be bigger than any one coach.

I'll probably vote for The Hall Monitors…even though Candy Stripers isn't half bad either.

  • Kelin Blab

Alex you made some good points which moved me off of the Creaniacs and give my official endorsement to “The Hall Monitors”. The Candy Stripers open us up to many many 'Stripper Jokes”………The Hall Monitors should be it….

  • cooper

None of them jump out at me. Hall Monitors is ok but reminds me of nerdy kids getting you in trouble at school, Candy Stripers are another name for female hospital volunteers. Not sure these are the images we are going for. Then again I've been sitting here for 5 minutes and can't think of anything better

  • Hoosier_Hound

As much as I've come to hate Illinois and baby Brucey over this decade, I think their student section is a model worth following. The way it's set up as a charitable organization is admirable, with the more money you raise the better student seats you get. It would be nice to see Indiana basketball use its big clout, over twice the student seats as Illinois, to raise money for good causes, too. Lastly, I like Hall Monitors if they name it.

  • hoosierodi

Im mad the Assembly Holics isnt in the top, but if i had to vote out of those i would say The Hall Monitors.

  • psvirsky

ooh i really enjoy that one

  • timmayat

if we are willing to consider mccracken, why not name it after RMK in some way? Maybe Knight's Eyebrows, The Game Face, Knight Riders, i dont know

  • stephen

Also the BobKnight Marauders, that could work.

  • dagwoodsupreme

why not the “Crimson Crazies”….I agree we should not name the section after a coach who has been here less than 2 years…

  • dagwoodsupreme

    or…”The Big Red”

  • a501

First of all I just want to add that is hard to have a student section name when you don't have a student “section” to begin with. However, I am probably the only student at IU that realizes it can't be done inside of Assembly Hall.

If I were to go with one based on appeal I would say the Hall Monitors as well. I just think it is a bit too much as far as syllables and letters. Look at the Izzones, Paint Crew, and others.

    HOOSIER HOSTILES!

We should just pay homage to both our great coaches. The Knights of Coach McCracken's Court

  • jgongora86

    i like this one.

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

I like Creaniacs. I know avoiding the coach's name is safe, but most schools do this and get away with it.

If not that, then I'd go Hall Monitors. It doesn't have to be dorky thing, it can be more of an authoritative thing. Maybe the students all wear ref shirts, but with red stripes, because “we're in charge of Assembly Hall”, not the other team, not the refs…

funny i think the two the author likes are two of the worst. hall monitors and candy stripers make me think of high school and nurses.

crean machine if we go with a coach related one.

crimson guard sounds cool. i also like crimson knights (in honor of you know who).

whatever it ends up being it doens't really matter.

Sorry Alex but I don't like Hall Monitors or Candy Stripers at all. You can be almost assured that the other team's fans will be linking Hall Monitors with a large number of unappealing things and then there will be the inevitable discussion on should we change it or not. Like Kelin said the candy stripers only opens us up to stripper jokes and other various things that we don't want to be associated with.

There is nothing says that if you go with a name linked to the coach's name it can't be changed later on plus I think the best ones on the list are the ones with Crean in them someway. I also like a couple of other ones that have been suggested here such as Hoosier Hostiles and Crimson Crazies, either one of these two are waaaaaaay better than Hall Monitors or Candy Stripers IMHO.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com Alex

Fair enough. Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion.

  • JerryCT

Geez I cannot get excited about any of the choices. Is this the limit of today's university creativity ?

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I will be giving thanks to:

    - having a coach and team that I trust will not embarrass me off the court
    - having a community of fans that love and support their team in a proud manner
    - having players that are working their butts off to meet all of our expectations

And……..oh yes….I will give thanks that I have ITH to keep me connected to all of this

  • IUMIKE1

Alex, hope I didn't come off as if I was dogging you or as a hard a$$ cause that was not the intention at all. Love this website and the way it is run. Your site is the first thing I check when I get in the office and last thing I check before heading to bed (my office is in my home). Hope to be sending a donation soon. Being self employed in a business that is tied to the buying and selling of homes right now is not a real good thing.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com Alex

I didn't take it like that at all. Have a great holiday and thanks for your support.

  • vince1031

Creanatorium isn't bad except for the potential backlash from IU's Jewish population

  • Rockstar

    How about HOOSIER HOOLIGANS

  • dude_abides

    Should've been the Crimson Crazies

  • hoosierodi

That would basically be copying the Cameron Crazies. Let's at least be original with this.

  • HoosierSmitty

No one is reading this post anymore and it's pointless because they'd already made the choices, but what about the Btown Brigade?

A slight nod to the general….

  • keej

I have a crazy question…where did you get your celebrity “big heads?” Did your creative department make those or did you get them somewhere else? I think they would be fun for a play we are putting on. Thanks for the help!
