Washington Times report: Jeremiah Rivers to Indiana

by Alex Bozich in Media | May 10th, 2008

rivers.jpgA report this morning in The Washington Times says that former Georgetown guard Jeremiah Rivers, son of Boston Celtics coach and Marquette alum Doc Rivers, plans to enroll at Indiana. Rivers visited the Indiana campus on Friday, according to the Hoosier Scoop. Here’s what the Times is reporting:

Georgetown guard Jeremiah Rivers, who announced his intention to transfer this past week, plans to enroll at Indiana, according to a source close to the program. A 6-foot-4 guard who served as the Hoyas’ defensive stopper during his two seasons with the Hoyas, Rivers joins another former Big East performer in Bloomington, Ind., where he will attempt to help former Marquette coach Tom Crean rebuild the Hoosiers.

According to a story published in yesterday’s Boston Globe, Celtics coach Doc Rivers was not pleased with his son’s decision to leave Georgetown. But the young guard felt like a shift to Crean’s perimeter-oriented system would help him improve on last season’s pedestrian production: 2.5 points and 2.4 rebounds in 18.4 minutes.

Rivers was familiar with Crean due to his father’s ties to Marquette as well as playing against Crean in the Big East. He won’t be available until the 2009-2010 season due to NCAA transfer rules, but this is a nice pickup (if the report is indeed accurate, which it appears it may be premature) because this kid is an excellent defender and ball handler.

I actually really like this move. This nails a sizeable and quick point guard for 2009 and a guy who will not consider transfering . He plays ferocious defense and has big time experience. I hope we recind the Hulls offer and move toward power forward types.
  • uh..forwards and centers?
  • MikeinNC
This is great, but isn't it time to find some people that can rebound on the rare occasion that one of these fabulous guards misses a 3 point shot? I'm sure Crean is thinking about that and planning accordingly, but it sure does seem like we have too many guards and not enough shots that will be available.

Ok, but how many scholarships do we have. We have 3 staying, 5 coming in for 08, and 3 for 09. That's 11. We give one to Rivers; that's 12. We give one to Sutton, that's 13. We lose Taber after next season and we have offers out to Hulls, Prosser, Demetrius Walker etc. How is this going to play out if the NCAA keeps us at 12? Even if we get 13, we are over recruiting? Just read that the report about Rivers may not be accurate. I guess we wait and see.

my problem is playing time distributed amongst all these guards. I can see Nick Williams playing forward and possibly Rivers at small forward, but I don't want Creek getting scared out of his verbal because of the overload of guards. Hopefully Hulls decides to go elsewhere..Love ya Crean, but we need BIGS

To me this is a great pick up a tough defender to come off the bench in '09 we r going to have a solid team by then.

    PG-Verdell Jones
    SG-Jordan Crawford
    SF-Nick Williams
    PF-Tom Pritchard
    C-Maurice Sutton

    Bench:
    PG-Jeremiah Rivers
    SG-Maurice Creek
    SF-Matt Roth
    PF-Brandon Mcgee/Derek Elston
    C-Bobby Capobianco

We r going to be fine the only thing we will have problem with is getting all these great players PT for instant i dont see how Dumes see's the floor in '09 or the walk ons we r going to have a lot of talent and im excited already for the '09 season next year may not be that bad if all the players can get on the same page
  • BTOWN40
Is it possible that Rivers could walk on and not take a scholarship. That would be huge as we know Doc can afford to send him to IU out of pocket and save the scholarship for a much needed big
  • TomCoverdaleIUHero
that would be nice, it could happen really but all these people are getting worried about the future we will have better then average bigs starting and who has great back up bigs we will Elston and Capobianco and possibly SVT i think TC is doing a great job and we r going to be Big Ten contenders very soon
  • BTOWN40
true usually now in college you see alot of 3-4 guard lineups with your 6'4 or 6'5 guys playing the forwards spots. you also have to look at who Crean has with Nick Williams his 7 foot wingspan can make up for a couple of inches...
  • JerryCT
I only disagree on one thing, DUMES. He is probably our best 3 pt scorer and that will be impossible in Crean's scheme to keep on the bench. Not only was he dynamite at East Mich per minutes played his 3pt shots last year in Juco would have been an IU record.

From the videos I have seen of Roth's shot it needs to be radically altered in order to score against tight D plus his game may not be versatile. I think he sits and Dumes stars both years.
  • TomCoverdaleIUHero
Dumes will obviously see the floor alot this year but with the addition of Maurice Creek his minutes are going to go way down......and Demetrius Walker said IU was his number 1 right now i remember when this kid was getting hyped out of middle school and now is only a 3 star recruit but has tremendous upside looks like a terrific player
  • JerryCT
Yes sorry, I forgot about Creek but Dumes will be a senior leader not a freshman. I still think Roth has the most work to do for PT. You left Dumes completely off your list . Have you played against or seen any of these guys up close ? Just wondering
  • TomCoverdaleIUHero
No but im just saying right now Crawford is the starter at shooting guard and VJIII is going to start point and i see him coming off the bench this year but next year with the arrival of Creek i just see his MPG dropping just my thoughts from what i hear all Dumes can do is shoot if he is more then that he will get more PT but if you know something about this kid or know where i can see video of him let me know because i have seen nothing just herd he was a great shooter
  • MPmike
Matt Roth at SF. He is too short and not very fast. Maurice Creek makes more sense. Reverse Creek- 6'5' SF and Roth-6'2' SG.

And how can you say that Devan Dumes won't see the floor? You have not seen him play. He is from Indianapolis and played against great competion such as the likes of Greg Oden, Mike Conley, Eric Gordon, do I have to go on? Indianapolis is enough said. Dumes was also named all-Marion County his senior year with yes-you-guest it-Oden and Conley, etc.. He also played a year of D-1 against solid competition, and he also played for a very good JC program(Vincennes) in Indiana.

Finally, Dumes is an outstanding shooter and solid with his decision making skills.
So if you are selling Devan Dumes short, then you are a dead wrong!!!

is it a possiblity to give us a rundown of scholarships we have out there and to whom and how many we have left..Crean is moving faster than I can keep up with these offers, just need a little clarity, thanks..
  • BTown40,

I'll definitely try to put something together soon. Haven't been around the computer much this weekend with it being Mother's Day and all.
  • ricochet
I can understand some of you scratching your head about the offer to Demetrius Walker but not Rivers. IU only has 1 PG on the roster come next season and that will be Verdell Jones. I'm sure next season Crawford and Dumes will see some time there but there not PG's.

So IU needs another PG and Rivers would be a much better fit in Crean's system then in the slow down offense Georgetown runs. He's a great defensive PG and has great size and in a guard based offense he will flourish.

Nick Williams is a SG but with his strength and versatility he's more than capable of being a SF especially in Crean's offense. I expect him early on to see more time at SF because of lack of players and that McGee will be needed this season to be more of a PF.

No disrespect but Matt Roth was recruited as a specialist, a shooter and thats what he is, a shooter off the bench and there is no chance that he will ever play the #3.

Maybe Crean sticks with a 3 guard offense beyond this year and if thats the case then IU already has most of there big men because comboforwards McGee and Elston would be playing as PF along with Bobby C.

At Center IU will have Pritchard and possibly Sutton so thats 5 players that will be 4 and 5's.

The point being is that another PG is needed, plain and simple whether the team is going with a 3 guard offense or a traditional lineup with true SF's PG is a need.

So question adding another SG not a PG.
  • I see eltson and creek to be starters.................I don't think pritchard is going to start after this season is over
  • TomCoverdaleIUHero
Pritchard will start this dude is a brawler he's big rebounds and knows how to play
  • drode
Can he bring back Ewing jr back with him cause that would be nice. I like this pick up a gaurd that can shut it down on defense. Sounds like we just got Ratliff back but his spare time will be spent in the gym and studying, not smoking weed, drinking, and partying.
  • Kelin Blab
hearing and reading more about Sutton, it is sounding better and more likely he could be a hoosier. Seems to come from a good family and a very very intelligent kid. Understands the IU traditions and history.....gotta love the subway story he told...
  • I wouldn't mind sutton. 3 star recruits don't bother me that much because that is just an opinion. In the right system, program, and with the right coach...they can excel as much as any player.
  • really we aren't shaping up that bad. It seems like we have to many gaurds, but really with Nick Williams being big and 6-4 or 6-5 he could play at small forward. Then you have Derek Eltson at 6-8 whow can play small forward and power forward. Looking forward to 2010....when we will really be rolling....and dumes scholly becomes available...this is what were looking at.

    Point Gaurds- crawford, jones, rivers

Shooting Gaurds - creek, williams, roth

Small forwards - Eltson, McGee, (williams)

Power Forwards - VT or Prosser, Cabo, (Eltson)

    Centers - Sutton*, Pritchard

If we get these guys, and river pays his own way........which could happen......that leaves us 2 schollys for 2010 or sooner.....considering apr and what not, I say we get us a bad ass center....maybe travis carrol........and another power forward....and we will be set
  • add a 5 star point gaurd.....another decent back up........and a 5 star small forward...and we are really rolling.....but now i'm just getting too excited
  • for 2011 that is

“In two seasons at Georgetown, Rivers never scored in double figures, but he had earned the reputation of being a “defensive stopper.”

Sounds like a role player at very best. With the talent that we have left, I think that we need talent more than a mediocre role player that is a kid of a friend.
  • I know Jeremiah a little bit and his dad pretty well. Jeremiah is a good kid that will definitely be a team player and someone that IU fans will love to root for, plus with his dad you know he'll be a smart player, and someone that will never cause problems. He also has talent and will fit a need.

With that said, even before the Rivers news I was already pretty worried about our size and scholarship situation. We really need a imediate impact big man at some point.
