Welcome to IU basketball “summer in review,” where we will recap the summer that was for the program’s 2026-27 roster.

The Hoosiers, representing the United States, played an exhibition game in Assembly Hall in July and four games in the FISU America Games in Lima, Peru.

A 6-foot-8, 185-pound wing from Cary, North Carolina, Manhertz was the third player to commit to the Hoosiers in the 2026 recruiting class.

The North Carolina native graduated from the Christ School and played for Garner Road on the adidas 3SSB circuit.

Game-by-game statistics for Manhertz this summer

• Exhibition vs. Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf: 10 points on 3-for-8 shooting from the field. He was 2-for-7 on 3-pointers. Manhertz added four rebounds and an assist in 22 minutes.

• FISU America Games vs. Peru: 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Manhertz shot 3-for-5 on 3-pointers.

• FISU America Games vs. Virgin Islands: Two points, five rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.

• FISU America Games vs. Chile: Four points, seven rebounds and three assists.

• FISU America Games vs Virgin Islands: 15 points and three rebounds.

• Final Averages at the FISU America Games: Manhertz averaged 8.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.5 blocked shots. He shot 11-for-17 from the field (64.7 percent), 6-for-12 on 3-pointers (50.0 percent) and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line (100.0 percent).

Notes on Manhertz from open practices

• June 18 practice notes: “It was well known that Manhertz would need time to work on his body upon his arrival in Bloomington. That objective is still a work in progress, though he is beginning to make strides and gain weight. The best tool in his game is his perimeter shot and his left-handed release is smooth and efficient. At 6-foot-8, it’s not hard to see why Manhertz was considered a top 75 prospect out of high school.”

• June 25 practice notes: “As is the case with Karvala, Manhertz needs to get stronger, but that’s true of most freshmen. He can shoot it but most of what he does right now offensively is catch-and-shoot rather than off the dribble.”

• July 7 practice notes: “Manhertz has a smooth shooting stroke for a lefty and he’s still adjusting to the physicality of the college game. All of the rotation forwards on the roster outside of Vaughn Karvala are stronger than him, so he’s constantly battling to keep his position. Continuing to add weight and strength will benefit his game in the months and years to come. Right now, he’s most effective as a catch-and-shoot threat on the perimeter.”

Five summer quotes from Manhertz

On getting acclimated to IU:

“I think it’s been really really good. Coming in I didn’t know what to expect other than it’s gonna be hard so I think us having practices that are hard but not like draining is really good for me just to get into college shape, college physicality.”

On the biggest thing he’s had to work on from a basketball perspective:

“Really just my confidence. Like right now, new team, feel like I’m getting to know everyone but I’m not as confident as I was last year so I think just getting my confidence back up and I’ll be there.”

On what made him choose IU:

“Really the coaching staff. I was recruited by Rod Clark and he what he had to say to me was really… like I could tell it wasn’t just he’s recruiting me as an athlete, he was seeing me as a person, too.”

On building chemistry with new teammates:

“I think it’s gone really well. Some people are more outgoing than others. That brings the shyer people like myself just more into each other. When that happens, we’re a lot more connected and I think that’s been what’s happening. We’ve got a lot of connection the past couple weeks.”

On playing for Darian DeVries:

“I think it’s very, you can tell he’s invested into the team. He wants us to be good. He doesn’t want us to lose, he wants us to be good. So I think him just making sure we do everything right and don’t cut corners and stuff like that has been very beneficial.”

“Trevor’s he’s one of those guys, maybe on the first week you look at his size and think, well, he’s got to bulk up and stuff. And, sure, he’s got to do that.

“But I tell you what he does is he sticks his nose in there. And he’s got an incredible feel for the game for such a young player. He understands where guys are going to be, the concepts of offense, the concepts of defense.

“I think his upside is tremendous. I think you saw flashes of that tonight. Like, why we’re so excited about him and some of the things he’s been doing. He’s got great length. Skill set is really good. So he’s just scratching the surface, which is awesome.”
