6-Banner Sunday: IU disappoints with 1-2 record at Battle 4 Atlantis

  • Dec 1, 2024 8:25 am in

Welcome to another edition of 6-Banner Sunday, a joint production between The Assembly Call and Inside the Hall, where we highlight the five most essential IU basketball stories of the past week, plus take a look at how the other IU sports programs are doing.

IU basketball’s strong start to the season came to a grinding halt in the Battle 4 Atlantis. This again leaves more questions than answers about where this season is headed.

Besides this, readers will find information about women’s basketball’s much better performance in Battle 4 Atlantis and weekly shows. As usual, we will conclude with a look at other Hoosier sports, led by football, which dominantly reclaimed the Old Oaken Bucket.

Here is what is in this week’s edition:

• Hoosiers snap two-game skid against Providence in Battle 4 Atlantis
• IU overwhelmed by Gonzaga in Battle 4 Atlantis
• Indiana blown out by Louisville in Battle 4 Atlantis opener
• Women beat Columbia and Baylor and fell to UNC at Battle 4 Atlantis
• Podcast on the Brink and Back Home Network shows
• Hoosier Roundup

IU men’s basketball will play six games this season on Peacock and the women will play five contests on Peacock, making the streaming service a must-have for IU basketball fans. Sign up for Peacock using Inside the Hall’s link to help support the site and also enjoy Big Ten hoops all season long! In total, over 70 men’s and women’s games featuring Big Ten teams will air on Peacock this season (The link is an Inside the Hall affiliate link, so a commission will be paid to ITH if you click and subscribe to Peacock.)

Banner #1 – Hoosiers snap two-game skid against Providence in Battle 4 Atlantis

Indiana basketball has mostly gone as Myles Rice has gone this season. He was a very strong presence in IU’s first four games as the team started a perfect 4-0. However, Rice and the Hoosiers’ guard play, in general, fell off massively in the Battle 4 Atlantis as the team finished just 1-2 there.

They did salvage the finale there against Providence in a solid performance on Friday, though. While Rice provided little, Trey Galloway, Mackenzie Mgbako, and Malik Reneau combined for 64 points as Indiana dominated the Friars 89-73.

Afterward, IU coach Mike Woodson spoke, Ryan Corazza wrote a Minute After, Alex Bozich put together Five Takeaways, and Will Foley penned a column about the offense.

Banner #2 – IU overwhelmed by Gonzaga in Battle 4 Atlantis

The Hoosiers were surprisingly up against an elite Gonzaga squad on Thanksgiving in the loser’s bracket after the Bulldogs fell to West Virginia. However, Indiana could not duplicate the Mountaineers success as neutral court blowouts remain a theme of the Woodson era. The final was the reverse of the Providence result, with IU being on the wrong end of an 89-73 score in this one.

Afterward, Woodson spoke, Corazza wrote a Minute After, Bozich put together Five Takeaways, and Foley penned a column about the squad’s lack of answers.

Banner #3 – Indiana blown out by Louisville in Battle 4 Atlantis opener

In the worst defeat of all, Indiana opened their journey in the Bahamas with a 28-point loss against Louisville 89-61. The Cardinals are a squad that features 13 new players and is still digging out of the disaster that was the Kenny Payne era.

Afterward, Woodson spoke, Corazza wrote a Minute After, Bozich put together Five Takeaways, and Foley penned a column about the lack of preparation.

Banner #4 – Women beat Columbia and Baylor and fell to UNC at Battle 4 Atlantis

The women’s team continued to alternate between good wins and bad losses. However, their trip to the Bahamas was significantly better than their male counterparts.

After last week’s victory over Columbia, the Hoosiers upset another ranked team in Baylor to reach the event’s championship game. This is where the run ended though as Indiana ran out of gas and was dominated by North Carolina. They sit at 4-3 but have a month of a more manageable schedule in December as IU looks to establish consistency.

Banner #5 – Podcast on the Brink and Back Home Network shows

Podcast on the Brink was recorded this week. It featured William McDermott previewing the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament.

The Back Home Network was on-air multiple times this week. Assembly Call PostgameBison ChatSeveral Crimson Cast ShowsDoing The Work, and Dribble Drive all had episodes.

Banner #6 – Hoosier Roundup

• Football shutout Purdue 66-0 to reclaim the Old Oaken Bucket and finish their best season ever at 11-1. Their next stop is almost certainly the College Football Playoff

• Men’s Soccer beat Akron in a thriller to open their NCAA Tournament run but fell to Denver in the Sweet 16 to end their season. Assembly Call was at both games to provide coverage and the only IU media site to make the trip out to Denver.

• Volleyball fell to Ohio State but closed their season strong with victories over Michigan and Illinois.

• Baseball signed a top-15 ranked nationally recruiting class.

• Women’s Tennis announced their 2025 schedule.

Thanks for your continued support of The Assembly Call and Inside the Hall. We’ll be back next weekend with a new roundup.

Now go enjoy yourself a 6-banner Sunday.
