At the Buzzer: Louisville 89, Indiana 61
Quick thoughts on an 89-61 loss to Louisville:
How it happened
It was a nightmare of a first half for Indiana on Wednesday afternoon in the Bahamas. The Hoosiers kept turning the ball over and could never get comfortable in the paint despite their physical advantage. The result was an opening 20 minutes in which the Hoosiers trailed by 10 points twice and trailed 37-29 at the break. Indiana shot a dreadful 31 percent from the field in the first half, turned it over 11 times and attempted just six 3-pointers. Louisville, meanwhile, shot close to 47 percent from the field and went 7-for-17 (41.2 percent) on 3s. The halftime margin would have been greater if not for Malik Reneau’s 15 points. Indiana’s guards – Myles Rice, Kanaan Carlyle and Trey Galloway – did not score in the first half.
The second half was a continuation of the first half. Louisville was the aggressor, as Indiana looked unprepared and uninspired. By the 13:26 mark, Louisville led 62-37 on a layup by James Scott. The lead ballooned to 28 points at 68-40 on a Terrence Edwards Jr. layup with 11:46 remaining. It only got worse from there. By the under-eight media timeout, Louisville’s lead was 74-40. The embarrassing loss put the Hoosiers into a 2:30 p.m. ET tipoff against the loser of Gonzaga-West Virginia on Thanksgiving Day.
Standout performer
Malik Reneau led Indiana with 21 points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes.
