Film Session: Purdue

Purdue had little in the way of answers against Xavier Johnson in ball screen action on Saturday afternoon.

Johnson really got going in the second half, where he racked up nine of his career-high 12 assists.

Time and again, Johnson made the right reads, allowing for Indiana to be aggressive and in movement on offense down the stretch, instead of dumping the ball into Trayce Jackson-Davis in the post.

Johnson assisted on four Indiana baskets during the final five minutes of action, helping to keep pace until the final buzzer, where the Hoosiers again fell short.

We’ll take a look at those four assists — as well as one possession that didn’t work out — in the latest edition of Film Session:

Out of a sideline inbounds, Race Thompson dribble hands off to Johnson on the left side. Jackson-Davis comes to set the ball screen. Trevion Williams plays somewhere between drop coverage and a soft hedge on Johnson.

Before Williams has time to recover back to Jackson-Davis, Johnson tosses the ball up and over him to the rolling Jackson-Davis. Mason Gillis is there on the help somewhat. But he cowers under the shot from Jackson-Davis, as the Hoosiers pull to within a point.

Nice work by Johnson here to get it out of his hands at the right time for TJD to feast.
