Film Session: Penn State
Here’s a left wing dribble hand off from Myreon Jones to Sessoms:
Harrar sets the ball screen and Jackson-Davis is in hedge position:
Jackson-Davis hedges, Phinisse recovers back and Franklin jams up Harrar on the roll:
Jackson-Davis recovers back to Harrar as Sessoms passes to Dread on the right wing:
Jackson-Davis is now back to Harrar and Franklin is now back on Jones. Indiana has hedged and recovered well on this ball screen and Penn State gained no advantage:
Dread passes back up top to Sessoms:
So what does Penn State decide to do? Ball screen action up top once again. Harrar comes up to set it for Sessoms. With Sessoms crossing over left to right as he uses the screen, Jackson-Davis is leaning the wrong way:
As Sessoms drives around the screen, Jackson-Davis has to move back to his left. The Hoosiers have Race Thompson and Galloway for help as Franklin is spread out far to the left wing:
Thompson stunts in as Jackson-Davis moves to Sessoms. Galloway is set up facing the action on the help as Brockington comes out of the corner:
Jackson-Davis is able to get to Sessoms and Galloway is in proper help position:
But Galloway opts to back pedal on Sessoms’ shot attempt — maybe to allow Jackson-Davis space to block from behind or maybe because he sensed Brockington behind him? — and it allows Sessoms an easier attempt at the hoop. He converts:
Unlike play two with Phinisee not fully rotating over to impede Sessoms’ lane to the basket, Galloway was in proper position here. He just chose not to defend him head on.
