Recruiting recap: Indiana offers three Class of 2022 players

Indiana was active on the recruiting trail Monday, extending scholarship offers to a trio of class of 2022 players.

Still without any commits in the Class of 2022, the Hoosiers opted for backcourt talent with Monday’s scholarship offers, which went to a pair of guards from Maryland and a small forward from Virginia.

Here’s a more detailed look at the latest players to be offered by Indiana.

Rodney Rice – Shooting guard, DeMatha Catholic High School (Maryland)

The first player to announce his scholarship offer was Rice, a 4-star shooting guard who attends DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, just outside of Washington D.C.

If that school sounds familiar, it’s because it’s also the alma mater of former Indiana player Victor Oladipo.

The 6-foot, 4-inch Rice is yet to play a game for DeMatha Catholic, though. This is his first year at the school, and last season Rice averaged 22.9 points per game playing for Bullis School in nearby Potomac, Maryland.

A top-50 prospect in the class of 2022, Rice had a Zoom call with Archie Miller and the Indiana staff over the weekend prior to announcing his IU offer.

Incoming Indiana assistant coach Kenya Hunter is believed to have already had an impact in Rice’s recruitment. During his time at UConn, Hunter successfully recruited another DeMatha Catholic player, class of 2021 shooting guard Jordan Hawkins.

On Sunday, Rice told Stock Risers he is most interested in five schools: Alabama, Indiana, Louisville, Maryland and Miami.

Masai Troutman – Combo guard, St. Andrew’s Episcopal School (Maryland)

Next to announce his IU offer was Masai Troutman.

A 6-foot, 5-inch combo guard, Troutman is relatively off the grid for a college basketball recruit.
He doesn’t have any online recruiting pages, meaning there aren’t any rankings or stars attached to his name, but he does currently hold scholarship offers from the likes of Bryant, Florida and Georgetown.

Troutman, who plays AAU basketball for Team Takeover on the Nike EYBL circuit, averaged nearly 16 points and seven rebounds per game for a different school, St. John’s Catholic Prep, last season.

This is another scholarship offer with ties to the aforementioned Hunter.

Justin Taylor – Small forward, St. Anne’s-Belfield School (Virginia)

The final player to announce his scholarship offer Monday was 6-foot, 6-inch Justin Taylor.

A 4-star small forward in the class of 2022, Taylor is ranked as the No. 75 overall player in his class and the No. 18 small forward in his class according to the 247Sports Composite.

Like Troutman, Taylor also plays AAU basketball for Team Takeover on the Nike EYBL circuit. Once again, Hunter is also believed to be involved in Taylor’s recruitment.

During his sophomore season Taylor averaged more than 15 points and five rebounds per game for St. Anne’s-Belfield.

IU is only the latest high major school to become involved with Taylor’s recruitment, as he also has offers from the likes of Georgetown, Marquette, Maryland, N.C. State and Syracuse.

These three players join the likes of C.J. Gunn, Isaac McKneely and Jalen Washington, among others, as class of 2022 players with scholarship offers from Indiana.
