Film Session: Noah Vonleh’s touches

On IU’s second possession out of halftime, Vonleh’s unable to free himself on multiple postups. Crean looked to keep Vonleh out of foul trouble by using Sheehey and Hollowell on Payne at times,  but a third foul just after half still happened — another silly one:

This sequence would set the tone for the half, one where the Hoosiers sputtered offensively and Vonleh failed to register a field goal attempt. The freshman didn’t return until the 13:14 mark. During an offensive possession shortly after his return, Vonleh tries setting a screen Gordon doesn’t take, slumps around the left block and ends up falling over in the lane as Jonny Marlin fails to get a good screen on Matt Costello. Yikes:

Indiana got to the line well in the first half and it set a lot of cross screens in the second half to try and free guys in the paint and continue to hit the charity stripe. But a play like the one above shows the execution wasn’t quite always there as the possession ended in a contested long 2-pointer from Robinson — the most inefficient shot on the court. (Though it did find the bottom of the net.)

With Ferrell back in the game, Vonleh was to get the ball quick and draw a foul on IU’s next possession. But it was a non-shooting foul and he’d register no points:

The effort was there again two possessions later. But Marlin’s entry pass from the top of the key is picked off and Harris dunked it home for two. Between Williams’ issues getting it by a defender from this area and Marlin’s turnover, the top of the key entry has been an area of concern for working Vonleh the ball:
