The Minute After: UMBC

Thoughts on a 89-47 win over the Retrievers:

Indiana was getting good outside shots in the first half.

The Hoosiers just weren’t hitting them against UMBC’s zone, as they only made 2-of-14 from 3-point range. Still, they were able to carry a 16-point lead into halftime by scoring 24 of their 37 points off UMBC turnovers. And by the time the second half rolled around, Indiana found its 3-ball stride and never looked back. They hit 9-of-13 from beyond the arc in the second half. Christian Watford went off — he shot 7-of-8 in the second half and ended the game with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Matt Roth (4-of-5 from 3-point range) scored a season-high 14 points. It all resulted in another blowout victory after UMBC was able to cut the lead to 10 early in the second half.

But as Indiana now heads into conference play at 12-0, there’s some concern. Will Sheehey, who’s been a strong sixth man for the Hoosiers, watched the game on the bench. He’s on crutches. Derek Elston took in the action with sweats on. He’s got tape on a broken nose. And Verdell Jones went down with what looked like a hip injury near the end of the first half, and he never returned to action or the bench after halftime.

Indiana faced and passed tests against the likes of Butler, NC State, Kentucky and Notre Dame.

And now it looks as if a new one has emerged: keeping their winning ways afloat amidst a sea of injuries.

Elston shouldn’t be out long. And Tom Crean said after tonight’s game that both Sheehey and Jones are day to day. But if they’re unable to go next week, Crean may be using a lot more Roth, Remy Abell and Austin Etherington in his rotation as Big Ten season approaches next week. That’s a 3-point specialist and two freshman.

This isn’t to say the Hoosiers can’t still put up strong battles against Michigan State and Ohio State without them. But it is to say if Jones and Sheehey — two of Indiana’s top six rotation players — aren’t able to play against either of them, things do get harder for this team.

ONE PARTING THOUGHT

I usually don’t comment on the play-by-play or color broadcasters. But I must admit: Perry Clark really did it for me this evening on the color call. He described Tom Crean’s offensive and defensive sets in greater detail than anyone else this season and overall was just a real knowledgeable dude who didn’t have any gimmicks. And this was on an ESPN3/Watch ESPN broadcast, no less.

So yes: Here’s to you, Coach Clark.

A perfect 12-0!  Who would have thunk it?

Let’s go for a baker’s dozen in Lansing! Beat Sparty!

Everyone rips on Verdell Jones, but if we are without him in are line up against MSU, especially if Sheehey is out as well, I believe we will fine that things aren’t so bad with him on the floor.

Except Perry kept saying that Matt Roth was from the same hometown as Cody Zeller.

I already used my Christmas wish on beating Kentucky, quick one of you ITH’ers who hasnt wished for something yet, wish for all our guys to get healthy by Christmas!

    Great last line!

Another “scrimmage game”..hope Jones came out ok. Hoosiers in first half looked like they were already thinking about mom’s Christmas dinner..which I hope they all get to enjoy. Good bench workout. I know there are Abell fans on this board..but the kid really looks like a freshmen when he tries to take it to the hole with 2, 3 or 4 defenders around him. guess he’s never been coached to dish it off?  I hope Crean told him he’d be sittin’ if he continues that kind of reckless play. But hey he’s a freshman. Need Elston and Sheheey back..or IU is likely to be at least 0-2 in the conference to start out.  Who woulda thunk 12-0. Merry Christmas to all..Go Hoosiers.

Yeah really. I was like wow, Washington is a bigger town than I thought.

And the play by play announcer kept saying Verdell was our starting point guard. Please!

With the streak coming to an end at 58 tonight, how about an ITH-version of a standing ovation for Jordan Hulls!

The other guy said it first and got him sticking on it. Probably didn’t look to make sure he was right. And to give them the benefit of the doubt, Roth is from Washington…in Illinois.

(Gulp) Without Verdell Jones (If he is seriously injured), we won’t be able to make big plays like we usually did, and that will be troubling @ No.20 MSU. I guarantee Elston will be back, but don’t know about Sheehey. But there is a alternative. If Watford can play like the Kentucky game, Cody Zeller like the Notre Dame game, and Oladipo like the Chatanooga game, we can win @ No.20 MSU.

  • ksokes

plus Roth’s birthday isn’t til August, that along with the Washington mixup the announcers did a great job talking about Roth

If we can only have one guy back for MSU (between Will & VJIII), I vote for Sheehey.

Hopefully both fine and back at full strength next week.

Verdell should be back if he just pulled his hip flexor. Not hearing exactly what Sheehey’s injury worries me. I think he’ll more than likely be missing for the MSU game. Here’s hoping he’s there for New Year’s

And…. they were cross-town rivals in high school.  Bing!

Cue the Eddie Murphy laugh: He He He.

That’s a tough one.  I’d vote for VJIII, he’s really turned a corner playing within the team even though SheHeeMan is a lot more exciting to watch.

  • Indiana Native

I would have to say Verdell Jones lll because of his assists to every team member, while Sheehey is just a good leader.
P.S: I am not saying Sheehey stinks or anything. In fact, he is a outstanding player to me.

They need to find a cryotherapy bath like the Mavericks used for their aging bodies in the playoffs last season. Guys were using these intense Nitrogen gas baths and getting over injuries at warp speed. It accomplishes rapid healing without deterioration of the skin and flesh tissues that ice water baths can cause. I think there are only a few centers around the country that have them. Hey if he is on break send him to one to get medical treatment!! Mark Cuban could probably direct the Indiana Med staff to a center that offers this treatment for athletes. As long as it is handled within the staff for medical reasons it should be compliant within NCAA guidelines. I have read a lot about this therapy and it has validity. This will be the next big thing in sports medicine and rehab.

I would’ve never guessed we’d be 12-0 at this point and after the first 2 games of B1G conference play I’d never have guessed we’d be 12-2 so even if IU lost those two games it would still be a very strong first two months of the season!

If IU can pull out one of the two games next week then they’re sitting in great position for the rest of the year.  If they could 2-1 over the next three then they could position themselves for a top 3 B1G finish and a 2-4 seed in the NCAA tournament!

That’s still a bit wishful but at this point I think it’s totally possible!

  • Marco K. (i suck)

Things are fine with VJ3 on the court if without sheehey, of course!  we are not deep, but if everyone else is healthy, we can do without VJ’s uncertain demeanor and turnovers….

Roth could really contribute if he is brought in disguised as D Moore and launch from the 10 second line….

  • spe317

And he kept saying the Coach Crean changed the program’s culture. I’m gonna call BS on that one. The point of it being Indiana is the fact that there was no need to change the culture. Maybe I’m wrong on this one.

Cuban could probably afford to buy one for his alma mater

  • Casey B.

If Sheehey weren’t also hurt, I wouldn’t be that concerned. While I respect Jones greatly, I think his positive on-court contributions are largely negated by bad habits he’s never been able to shake.

While no one can compare to Don Fischer calling BB games, the ESPN3 guys were head and shoulders above the Dick Vitale crew at announcing this BB game.  They made the jerky telecast and small (24″) screen almost palatable.

  • BEAT KENTUCKY

    Well…..the socks r nice

  • Anonymous

Yes but in their defense they probably didn’t do much prep on Roth. Granted that is their fault but it was still better than the last ESPN3 broadcast

  • Anonymous

Yeah, both of those mix-ups were rather annoying since we had to hear it the whole time Roth was in the game, but the play-by-play was very good.

  • Anonymous

Uh…ask Manny Harris what he thinks of them. The former Michigan player may lose his roster spot with the Cavs due to a “freezer burn” he got from one. He’s out for a month or so with it.

I’m sure its a fluke but IU sure has its share of fluke injuries the past couple years.

I agree, Perry Clark was the man tonight. Time for the Mothership to give him a promotion. Maybe to take over for Dickie V, ok wishful thinking. Hey it is Christmas. Good win Hoosiers. Time to get it on next week. I am pumped!

What else was he supposed to say about a guy that he probably did zero research on before the game. Quit with the nit picking, analyst are bad enough these days. If that’s the worst he did I will take it, even if he was wrong hahaha

  • Anonymous

Exactly! Hell T bone Pickins or whatever his name his game OK State like a billion dollars. C’mon Mark! Cough it up brother!

Until he hits 8 of 10 free throws. Ill take it

Sorry I stole your argument about their lack of research in an above post. In my defense I had not read your post yet when I wrote it. Go Hoosiers!

I looked to me like he rolled his ankle. Looked very painful. Hope I’m wrong. Merry Christmas and GGGgggggOOOOOooooo  HhOOoooSssiersssss

  • Scojacks13

I guess you didn’t hear the post game presser.  Crean told him to drive the ball, and take it up strong to the rim.  You didn’t notice Remy get called to the sideline, get coached up by Crean, then go back in and drive to the basket again?  If the kid can play solid against KY he can do what ever he wants against UMBC.

I’d say you are partially right. He didn’t need to change ‘Indiana Basketball’: the tradition that everyone knows us for, and what we have built. I think he was referring to the culture that Sampson allowed to grow: drugs, bad grades, general apathy.

That did need to be changed, and Dakich started it by getting rid of most of the junk. But Crean took the clean slate and building a shining example of what college basketball should be and is all about.

  • Mwilson

Verdell is my man!  He has been the epitome of an IU basketball player.  Take it from a 78 year old female who has been an IU fan for a very long time.

  • The_Real_Assembly_Hall

He was probably in it too long. I think a person is only to be in it about 2 minutes.

  • Adam

He didn’t play a single second against pUKe

Kills me that through four hours of IU-UK highlights with two different broadcasters ESPN still couldn’t say it right. It’s not THAT hard people.
