IU basketball’s Sam Alexis now ineligible for 2026-27 season following Tennessee Court of Appeals ruling

After winning a temporary injunction for an additional season of eligibility in late July, IU basketball forward Sam Alexis is now ineligible following a Tennessee Court of Appeals ruling on Wednesday.

The Tennessee Court of Appeals issued an order staying the temporary injunction that was granted to a group of athletes in late July.

The group of players impacted includes Alexis, Jalen Washington, Brody Robinson, Jack Browder, Olamide Ajiboye, Daniel Egbuniwe, Cameron Fens, Chendall Weaver, Jason Edwards, Zachary Davis, Tarence Guinyard, A.J. Storr, Carly Keats, Braxton Slacker, B.J. Edwards, Isabel Grimes, Jaylon Johnson, N.J. Benson and Dug McDaniel.

According to Sam C. Ehrlich, who writes about college sports law, the 19 players are ineligible “unless and until the Court of Appeals rules in their favor.”

Alexis, a 6-foot-9 forward, played for the United States, as part of the IU roster, at the FISU America Games in Lima, Peru, last month.

On August 2, Alexis announced that he would return to Indiana next season, which would be his fifth season of college basketball after winning a temporary injunction to allow for an additional season of eligibility.

Alexis is currently working out with IU basketball in Bloomington.

Last season for the Hoosiers, he averaged 8.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.2 blocked shots and 1.2 assists in 21.3 minutes per game.

The stay of the injunction is a legal win for the NCAA, which is seeking to enforce its guidelines that members of the 2022 high school class will not receive an additional season of eligibility.

Beginning with the 2023 high school class, athletes are permitted to have five years of eligibility to be completed in five calendar years.
