If RJ and this kid were on the same team, I’d pay money to watch those two guard each other.

  • IUBizmark

Game reminds me of a hybrid Yogi and Oladipo.

  • AUKevin

There was only 1 non dunk or layup in the entire 4 minutes. not sure what that says about his shooting stroke

  • ScoopGeoff

It says that he gets to the rim at will against the top 100 players in country… Lay-ups are easier than 20 footers.

  • ScoopGeoff

As I’ve been saying for months, this is the only guard I care about getting in the ’16 class. Everyone else is so far behind this guy to me. Of course it doesn’t hurt that I know one of his assistants from prep school last year and he had nothing but praise to heap on this kid. Works hard, loves the game, killer in practice… He is the closest thing I’ve ever seen to Russell Westbrook at this age.

  • SilentBob

I’d put Rawle ahead of him, but they’re both hard working kids who love the game. Would love for us to get both. And since we will at least be losing 2 guards from our team next year why not?

  • HoosierStuckInKY

Dude drives so much I’m surprised he doesn’t have his CDL right now čÖé In all seriousness though, any relation to the former NBA Bruce “Bow Tie” Bowen??

  • TomJameson

Don’t think that will translate to the college level. He needs an outside shot … not necessarily a 3-pt shot either. A pull-up or a floater would be nice.

  • Rick Pearson

How good of a chance does Indiana have and getting this kid looks pretty special would be nice in Indiana uniform I hope we can landing him would be really great

  • AUKevin

I can’t help but notice the numerous times he “hooked” his defender to get to the basket, used his off arm to push off or arm bar against the defender. It seems like that would wrack up fouls pretty quick in the Big Ten. I agree with TomJameson, he needs to have some versatility, otherwise he will be like Troy Williams who only had 2 results freshman year: dunk or charge.

  • marcusgresham

Seems to have excellent body control and pretty good strength, and was smart about using his body to shield the defense (someone mentioned pushing and hooking; I saw a couple of instances that may have been called, but mostly I thought he was in good position.)
Quick hands the couple of steals we saw.
Went left a couple of times, including on the only jumper we saw.
Never seemed to stand still–kind of like Sheehey in that regard.
Can he pass? I’m not saying he isn’t a willing and capable passer, but I don’t think I saw a single one in this reel.
I think the Russell Westbrook comparison is a good one.

  • Kyl470

He can dunk which means if he commits to IU everyone will immediately say he is the next Oladipo.

  • hoosier93

Well as far as we know RJ doesn’t know what defense is. So that’d probably be pretty boring.

  • Robert Golden

Defense is all coaching. We have the athletes to defend, plain and simple.

  • IUBizmark

Too late. I already called him a Yogi Oladipo hybrid yesterday.

  • IUMIKE1

Would be nice to have this kid, but if it comes down to him or Rawle, I’m on the Rawle bandwagon as well.

  • hoosier93

We have lazy athletes and bad coaches. Plain and simple lol.

  • Robert Golden

CTC was an assistant under Izzo ugh, can’t excuse players faults though

  • hoosier93

But Crean also never played basketball at a higher level. Did he even play past Junior High? You can tell he has no feel for the game like the coaches who played some sort of basketball after JH.

  • Robert Golden

Back on topic… Bruce Brown is a 1 who can play some 2, moreso as his shot improves. I don’t see him playing the 3 although he is a SOB as a guard rebounder.

  • hoosier93

I’d hope at 6-3 he never had to be at the 3. He needs to v be at the 1 or 2 only. I’m guessing he isn’t a shooter. Jeremiah Rivers anyone? But I liked Rivers a lot.

  • Robert Golden

Brown is a point guard but needs to sharpen his handle. Was told he registered 29% from deep in AAU. I’d make the kid take 1,000 jump shots every day for the next 6 months and rebound for him.

  • hoosier93

29% from HS 3? Yikes… I think I could do that left handed haha. But maybe that also goes along with shot selection? The 3 or showed him hitting was a step back.

  • Robert Golden

    I am a towering 5’11 and I’ll hit 3’s till you cry.

  • hoosier93

AAU coaches ate just really bad at coaching anymore. It’s all about getting paid. They don’t teach anything other than to go dunk it. AAU is a complete joke now.

  • hoosier93

And I’d be blaming them if they’re not working with Brown.

  • Robert Golden

    Appears so.

  • Robert Golden

Please keep me and the site updated on Brown’s progress. TIA.

  • Bill Graham

    He’s the next Oladipo.

  • Yogadipo

  • hoosier93

    We needed this comment.

  • dschiller33

Reminds me of a young Russ Westbrook for sure! No saying he is just reminds me of him!!

  • ScoopGeoff

His shot isnt broken. Pretty decent shooter, and improving. Good FT shooter according to his coach I know. Better shooter than passer. The quickness and change of direction is absolutely elite and will definitely transfer to the next level. It will be more about skill development than whether or not his style will translate.

Bottom line: he was the best player and leader on arguably one of the 2 best pre-college teams in the country last year. VT Academy had 4 top-100 players on their roster and played in the toughest league in the country. He regularly went up against older players who will end up in the NBA and was a dominant force in the conference.

I’ll take him and his fierce competitiveness or Atkin’s polish any day.
