Anyone else notice that in this one, McClain’s, and Buckley’s, their phones keep dinging? Recruiting never ends I guess.

In just a few months it seems like he’s really connected with recruits, their families, and their coaches. Really speaks to how likeable he must be.

  • chip

really glad we could get kenny aboard.

  • Crimson&CremeFraiche

Thats the first time I have heard him speak. I like this guy a lot.

  • jacobdetroy

Well, he seems like the nicest person on earth.

Won’t be difficult for a recruit or his family to welcome Coach Johnson into their home. Seems to have it all together…a great representative for IU and Crean’s program.

  • Pritch24

If that is a phone. Just an assumption

  • jasonwehlage

Seems like a great guy, but just being honest here…it seems as if he were brought on board because of who he knows more so than what he knows. Going from an assistant on a 1-31 team to the next year an assistant on the number one-ranked team in the country is like hitting the assistant coaching lottery. Here’s to hoping not all the recruits coach Johnson brings in need an introduction to Indiana basketball with a trip through the Hall of Fame. Don’t mean to be negative, and i’m sure I’ll catch some slack…I know it happens with frequency more now than in the past (even happened back in the day), but there is a sense of purity that doesn’t sit well w/ me

alex…has the Anya family enforced an info blackout on the meeting with Crean et al? Others commented next day..nothing coming out of the BJ camp is a bit bothersome….unless he’s doing the same thing with other visits. YOu’d think that since the kid tweeted the meeting day he’d have something to say afterward. I know IU is not allowed to discuss it’s recruits.

could have been getting fantasy football updates?

You may be correct in him being innocent and naive, but I would point to the awesome assistants that surround him. Kenny doesn’t need to be the top x’s and o’s guy, we got other people for that. What Kenny is supposed to be doing right now in recruiting and preaching the brand he seems to be the perfect fit. I would share more of your concern if he was tasked with more of the coaching. In time I am sure he will get there, though.

You’re talking about kids being recruited who don’t even know who Bill Clinton is beyond being an old dude who pops up on TV sometimes. Bob Knight was gone from IU before their first memories were formed…a lot of IU fans in their 20’s and early 30’s don’t even know who Landon Turner or Dean Garrett are or have first hand memories of a national title. Some of these recruits were born in 1997 or ’98…what’s for them to remember about IU basketball beyond Mike Davis, Kelvin Sampson, and some rough years under Crean?

Also, I don’t think it’s fair to bring up the 1-31 record at Towson…that’s about like holding Crean responsible for IU’s record the first year. I think Johnson’s proving his talent with inroads on kids like Vonleh, a Top-10 recruit with every big name, smooth talking head coach and assistant in the country pulling out their best effort to land him. Vonleh’s not a DC kid, had no previous connection to Johnson as far as I can tell, and yet is publicly stating mentioning Johnson and his coach is saying how great IU is doing recruiting him. That’s a lot of ground to make up.

Not trying to be harsh, just disagree as your comment implied that Johnson was just a lucky guy. He’s appears to have a real talent connecting with people.
