Crean on Indiana’s latest signee, Remy Abell

by in Recruiting | May 18th, 2011

Indiana coach Tom Crean took to Twitter this afternoon to offer his thoughts on the Hoosiers’ latest signee — Louisville Eastern guard Remy Abell.

Crean’s tweets, formatted here into one paragraph, are below:

“Excited that Remy Abell will be joining the program. He is a year-round winner who will bring a great deal of versatility to our program. He is a big guard who will have an immediate impact defensively with his ability to guard three positions. He can get to the rim on offense, knock down open shots and will really add to our transition game. I think the most impressive thing about him is his ability to make everyone around him better and he does not have to have the ball in his hands to be effective. In a lot of ways, he reminds me a lot of Jerel McNeal who we had at Marquette. We are very excited to have been able to get someone with ties to the So. Indiana/Louisville area where we have such a wonderful fan base.”

The Louisville native committed to Indiana back on April 27. He was selected for the Kentucky All-Star team and was named first team All-State by The Courier-Journal. He averaged 16 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.5 steals and had 25 blocked shots during his senior season at Eastern.

HD Video: Demetrius Jackson at adidas May Classic

by in Video | May 18th, 2011

Thanks to Dylan Burkhardt and Josh Houchin over at UMHoops for providing this HD video of Demetrius Jackson at last weekend’s adidas May Classic.

We profiled Jackson earlier in the week and the 2013 Mishawaka Marian point guard’s recruitment is picking up steam as Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Purdue and Xavier are all involved.

This reel is a little different than some of the videos we’ve posted recently as it shows a more complete look at Jackson including highlights as well as missed shots and turnovers.

adidas May Classic Q & A: Hanner Perea

by in Recruiting | May 17th, 2011

Hanner Perea became Tom Crean’s first five-star recruit at Indiana last fall when the Colombia native gave a verbal pledge to the Hoosiers on Halloween.

Perea met with reporters after a pool play game at Assembly Hall on Saturday and talked about the AAU season to-date, playing with Yogi Ferrell, his developing confidence and more. (Photo credit: Jamie Owens of J. Scott Sports.)

On Indiana Elite Team Indiana’s spring thus far:

“This is our fourth or fifth tournament and we haven’t won any yet. Everybody knows that we just need to play hard and get through these games. We need every game so we can get our first tournament.”

On whether it will help Indiana Elite having more depth on the bench:

“Oh yeah. I mean, right now, everybody’s getting to know each other much better. Our defense has gotten much better. Our offense has gotten much better because we’ve been spending a lot of time together. Everybody knows each other pretty well.”

On how tough it is to play eight or nine games in three days in an AAU event:

“I don’t think people realize that (how tough it is). Playing seven, eight games like this is pretty hard. These are good teams that run a lot so this is hard for us. To try to win four games in one day is pretty hard. It’s going to be tough for us.”

Donnal commanding high major attention

Indiana fans made their way to Assembly Hall on Saturday afternoon to watch two of the nation’s best freshmen — James Blackmon Jr. and Trey Lyles — meet Dan Dakich’s Indiana Elite South squad.

And for most of the game’s 32 minutes, it looked like Spiece Indy Heat, led by the pair of Indiana commitments, would emerge victorious.

But Mark Donnal had a different idea.

The 6-foot-9, 200-pound Anthony Wayne (OH) center poured in 23 points and added five rebounds and four blocks as IE South prevailed, 78-77.

The game’s final possession saw Donnal block a runner in the lane from Trevon Bluiett just before time expired.

“He started out, he hit a couple of shots (from the perimeter) and I thought he fell in love,” Dakich said of his emerging sophomore big man after the win. “He’s a tough guy. I thought at the end when he went down on the block, he just did what he can do. He finally started getting post position. He started getting two feet in the lane.”

The Ohio native’s play this spring has earned him the attention of several high major schools including Butler, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and Wisconsin.

Donnal, who averaged 15.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.5 blocks this past high school season, flew under the radar as Anthony Wayne won just one game.

“Last year in the summer a lot of guys saw him and liked him and went to go see him during the year,” Dakich said. “When he goes on the block, he’s a strong, skilled, good kid.”

The new recruiting attention, according to Donnal, is only driving him to continue working on his game.

“It just shows I need to keep getting better and just keep getting in the gym,” he said. “I’m definitely getting stronger so I don’t get pushed around at the college level.”

While the interest from the Hoosiers is still relatively new, the staff has made it known they’d like to get him on campus this summer for an unofficial visit. He’s also set up a visit to another Big Ten school for next month.

“They’ve (Indiana) called me a few times and want me to come down on a visit,” Donnal said. “I think I’m going to Michigan sometime in June and I’m also going to their elite camp.”

Jackson talks improvement, interest from Indiana

by in Recruiting | May 16th, 2011

After a standout weekend at the Bill Hensley Memorial Spiece Run ‘N Slam All-Star Classic, the list of schools looking to get involved with 2013 Mishawaka Marian point guard Demetrius Jackson has grown significantly.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Jackson averaged 24 points and six assists per game as a sophomore and his rapidly improving game is garnering serious interest from several high-major schools, including Indiana.

“I’ve gotten stronger and faster. I’m still working on skill development,” Jackson told Inside the Hall after MBA Select’s loss in the gold bracket at the adidas May Classic. “I work hard in the gym every day and get a lot of repetition and just continue to get better as a player.”

But even with the new attention, Jackson is keeping his focus on the court rather than getting caught up in his recruitment, which also includes interest from Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Purdue, Illinois and Xavier.

“All I care about is winning games,” he said. “Regardless of who recruits me and who doesn’t, you’ve still gotta work hard and play hard. I’m not going to force it. I’m just going to let it fall into place.”

Jackson and MBA Select had a tough weekend in Bloomington as the Mishawaka-based program dropped all three games in the 16-and-under division.

“Obviously, we didn’t play good enough,” Jackson said. “We’ve gotta play good defense. We’ve got to work harder defensively and just execute. We’ve just got to dig deep and that comes from within. Dig deep and play with heart.”
