Hey, look, Roshown McLeod can recruit

  • 06/09/2010 9:18 am in

After two disappointing seasons on the IU staff led to his dismissal in early March, former assistant coach Roshown McLeod was announced as the head coach at St. Benedict’s Prep on April 20. And since that time, McLeod has been in hot pursuit of North Central’s D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera, who visited St. Benedict’s over the weekend.

But a tweet last night, courtesy of Evan Daniels, revealed that McLeod landed the top 2012 prospect in Kentucky, Jaylen Beckham, which may be an indicator that Smith-Rivera will not make the move to St. Benedict’s. Beckham, who has IU listed on his Rivals.com profile, plays the same position as Smith-Rivera: point guard.

Here’s the tweet from Daniels:

Jaylen Beckham will transfer from Lexington Catholic to play for Roshown McCloud @ St. Benedicts

Smith-Rivera, one of IU’s top recruiting targets in the 2012 class, has scholarship offers from Cincinnati, IU, Louisville, Purdue, Tennessee and Xavier. But a move to St. Benedict’s to play for McLeod could be a crossroads in the pursuit of the North Central guard, who is considered one of the top prospects in the state regardless of class.

Just to stir the pot Uncle Joey…..”this would never have happened if we didn't have class basketball”….OK I said it, now lets fight…..

Just kidding but I still hate class basketball

  • Moyeswatsboozer

This is High School Basketball……….right? It's ridiculous that these guys can recruit from all over the country to fill a HIGH SCHOOL roster. They still couldn't win a state title in Indiana.

  • IUfanPurduePhD

I read the article title and wanted to shout “Buurrrn!” or “Oh snap!” … I'm waiting for McLeod to counter with a “your momma” joke directed at Alex via Twitter.

I think McLeod has always been unappreciated as a recruiter:

+ Got Kyrie Irving to his alma mater Duke,,,coincidence?
+ Got a commitment from David Williams to IU? Unfortunately when Roshown was fired UNC Greensboro snatched him up….mmm another North Carolina school

This is the next phase of high school basketball people:
+ Basketball camps are a thing of the past, unless an NBA name is attached. Remember the BC camps or 5 star. What happened to shooting camps….

+ College coaches contact the high school coach about players….now it is AAU coaches, Boncores, www, etc.

+ Now Prep Schools will begin to recruit kids from high schools, out of their STATE, and for sports related reasons ONLY. Sad Sad Sad. I hope parents don't get duped by this trend and send their kids off out of state too early.

I can't wait for the day when McLeod or another prep coach and his staff walk into a gym North Central or Bloomington South, and Doug Mithcell or JR Holmes, stops the game and sends security, principals, and the entire student section after them.

    Good for DS-R. Good decision.

  • Plane1972

Does anyone really know what happened with Kyrie Irving? I know this is old news and seems like crying over spilled milk, but I'm truly interested to hear what others think. There was mention of the infamous in-home visit by Crean that apparently was the last event in the saga. I have long suspected that McCloud showed more allegiance to his alma mater than to his employer and was influential in steering Kyrie to Duke over IU. Am I just being painfully obvious to what many of you have already known?

  • MillaRed

I'm not sure what McLeod is or is not right now. At the end of the day, he's a high school basketball coach. I'm not impressed.

Anyone that has followed local high school athletics has seen a kid play for another school out of district and it's pathetic. But going across the country is just tragic. What is going on with amateur sports in this country?

  • Uncle Joey

I'm not sure what the appeal is of moving across the country to play 1 year of high school basketball for a recently fired assistant coach because he wasn't good at his job. I could maybe understand if DSR lived in Canada or something, but c'mon its INDIANA high school basketball… arguably some of the best talent around.

  • GFDave

I read some quotes from his mom where she basically said that she hoped playing out there would increase his national exposure. I don't understand that because players can get all exposure they need playing in Indiana.

I'm thinking that maybe she was using code and was referring to exposure to Duke instead. Just guessing.

  • Bryan

I have no direct knowledge, but I've thought the same thing myself, especially how quickly IU went from penthouse to outhouse with Kyrie. That being said, I'm not sure if it was done intentionally or not. For all we know, the Irvings could have asked McLeod about his college experience, and he waxed poetic about his time at Duke a little too much, without trying to sell IU as better.

  • I have a source close to the program and this is what I heard. At the in home visit with Irving, McLeod actually told him that Duke/Coach K would be a better fit. So…the Irving's quickly eliminated IU from consideration. Apparently Crean didn't hear about this until a few weeks later…then he immediately dismissed McLeod.

  • Uncle Joey

If he wants “national exposure” then it looks like he's not satisfied with his current list of schools and wants offers from the “big boys” (Duke, NC, Kansas, etc)… which makes me think he's really not considering Indiana all that much anyway.

  • hoosierclarion

If that is the case, it does bring into question the IQ and the ability to reason that RM possesses. With the stigma from his firing leads me to believe he will not have early success in Indiana HS locker rooms and their players living rooms. Coaches no the score and parents will do the research.

  • marcusgresham

The sad thing is that prep schools are high schools that aren't beholden to the actual rules of high schools. Tuition for athletic ability, recruiting, etc….It's about the equivalent to a basketball brothel, where the coach/madam can dress up the young ones and shop them to potential colleges/johns.

It's not a new phenomenon, but it's becoming more common. Look back through your top basketball recruits for the last 30 years or so and see how many went to Oak Hill Academy in Mouth-of-Wison, VA.

  • HoosierDavey

I agree, Kelin. And this is coming from a guy who's alma mater has since won a 2A state title in basketball and baseball. There was nothing like taking on the big boys and beating them or giving them a run for their money!

  • Outoftheloop

ESPN is money and ratings driven. FIU and FAU don't cut it. Isaiah has been out of the NBA too long to really draw “eyeballs”.

  • BobbyDigital

I thought Crean was at the in home visit.

  • eph521

my thoughts exactly… that he wants more offers and could be teasing IU…

  • Kelin Blab

National exposure, Maybe he wants to be recruited by NATO, Alien life on Mars, and the Taliban?
How many more schools need to see him……

  • Kelin Blab

I guess this is the first time it is hitting Indiana soil….Fergunson now possibly DSR

  • Kelin Blab

on a side note, for the sake of college basketball and non iu coaches I like…I sure hope izzo does not leave. I just really really like the guy and I don't want him tainted by the NBA. Not to mention that Izzo scowl may not work with King James or Mo Williams

  • Outoftheloop

This could get very interesting. If the conference shakeup happens, the Big-12 could dissolve and Kansas could be left out or knocked down to a lower conference with less visibility; the SEC might gobble some of the ACC (Miami, FL St, GA Tech, …) leaving NC and Duke to ask in at the Big East. But the Big East will be exposed as very weak in football. This will leave 3 Super conferences: Pac 10, Big 10 and SEC, who will control college sports. The NCAA invitations for the basketball tourney will have to start reflecting this at some point. Recruits will have to start considering not just the Coach and the Program, but also the Conference and the Financials. Colorado, if they get a penalty in the next week or so from the NCAA, may find their athletic program in a real financial bind, in debt during a recession with the State Legislature not interested in helping them out!

  • Outoftheloop

Ferguson needed academic help to get in to college. With that help the only interest in him was from FL International. You might see him once or twice (or 0) a year on national TV. Meanwhile you will see Butler 10 times. Not a really good choice for national exposure.

  • IUfanPurduePhD

I want IU to get better and climb the ladder of the Big10–err, Big16 or whatever–but I don't want IU to do it at the expense of weakening the conference (which would likely happen if Izzo left). MSU has consistently made the Big10 look better with their performances in March over the past decade. (Can't the Cavs take a slimeball like Calipari?)

I bet Kenny Kaminski is sweating right now (and maybe JDavis too).

  • marcusgresham

The Big East is already very weak in football, with the exception of a decent West Virginia program (that may also be on the downslide with the loss of Rich Rodriguez.)

  • marcusgresham

I bet ESPN carries a handful of FIU games this year with the combo of Ferguson and Isiah Thomas. Can't wait–you can throw out the records when Florida International and Florida Atlantic hit the court!

  • marcusgresham

My fear deep in my gut was that if Izzo left Crean could be their first choice to replace him. I'd hope not, but who knows.

  • GFDave

Maybe he wants to play with Marvin Martian, MJ and and Bugs in Space Jam Hoosiers. vbg

  • GFDave

It must be very tempting to have a career type contract like that dangled in front of you. Very hard to resist.

But the B10 has had plenty of coaches come and go during our time: Heathcote, Knight, Keady, Henson, Davis, et al. The league has survived and thrived despite the losses.

I think that this must be tough, as PhD says, for Davis and Kaminski and I have to like our chances with them, especially Kaminski, if Izzo leaves.

  • Outoftheloop

ESPN is money and ratings driven. FIU and FAU don't cut it. Isaiah has been out of the NBA too long to really draw “eyeballs”.

  • Outoftheloop

    I agree.

  • Kelin Blab

JDavis could be really sweating it out big time this weekend..with Izzo contemplating leaving and Aaron Thomas in town showing how much IU could use him and why he isn't Jeremiah Davis.

JD it is this simple bro….you can eliminate the izzo issue and Aaron THomas by picking up the phone and saying Coach Crean count me in….

To be honest the longer he waits the the louder the Aaron Thomas chatter gets…..you know how impatient we are….

  • Kelin Blab

If izzo leaves, you will soon hear the sounds of a brinks truck in Indiana but not in bloomington, in Indianapolis looking to hire a young rising coach named Brad.

  • Kelin Blab

I would easily put $50 on at least ONE FIU game this year being on tv somewhere.

Nice line…you can throw out the records when Florida International and Florida atlantic hit the court…..

  • Kelin Blab

Maybe Mich State could hire Roshown McLeod, he can definitely recruit high school kids.

  • GFDave

I'd like Davis to get the schollie (Hoosier kid, Indiana Elite connection), but at some point you have to say he's had his chance and another good player stepped up and took it. I don't know if we've arrived at that point. Maybe with the move to NJ thing we have.

Generally speaking I think few players are good enough to simply wait, and wait and wait on. The schollies have less value if players can pick and choose when to take them. You need to create a supply and demand situation whereby multiple recruits of similar ability are favorably inclined to accept an offer and compete to get the only schollie available.

  • Tberry

Really great players wait and wait to announce there college choice because they love the months and month or adoration. This high school recruiting just gives them longer and longer to soak in all the “LOVE”!!!

  • marcusgresham

    Good call!
